[Fupenzi]
Sweet, sour, and warm in nature. Enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian and the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Stops deficiency-type diarrhea of the Kidneys; treats deficiency-cold of the Lungs. Tonifies the Liver, brightens the eyes and ears, strengthens Yang, and treats impotence. Combined with Yizhiren (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fructus), it treats frequent urination. Assisted by Poguozhi (Buglossae Fructus, i.e., Psoraleae Fructus), it treats erectile dysfunction due to Yang deficiency. Remove the pedicel and decoct with wine. Avoid alcohol, wheat products, and greasy foods during treatment.
Leaves: Grind into a fine powder, wrap in cotton, soak in human milk, and apply to the eyes to treat amaurosis (blindness) and dim vision, restoring normal sight.

Sweet and warm in nature. Enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Clears heat from food stagnation; treats pinworms. Strengthens the Spleen and Stomach; stops dysentery. Treats leukorrhea; promotes urination. Combined with Lu Hui (Aloe), it treats Spleen-Gan disease.
Remove the shell; use raw or cooked as needed. To kill parasites, it is best taken on an empty stomach in the first half of the lunar month mixed with brown sugar, followed by a decoction of its shells. Contraindicated in cases without food stagnation.
Contraindicated to eat hot-natured foods and hot tea while taking this herb; doing so will cause diarrhea.
[Maqianzi - Note: Text describes properties of Nux Vomica/Ma Qian Zi]
Contraindicated to eat pork.
Bitter, cold, and highly toxic. Enters the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Treats Gan accumulation; dissipates masses; treats dysentery; unblocks the Large Intestine. (For external use only; do not take lightly.)
Combined with Rougui (Cinnamon Twig), applied externally for swollen and painful Hong Kong foot (podagra/tinea). Combined with Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) and Furongye (Hibisci Mutabilis Folium), pounded and applied externally for Yin hernia. For sore throat (Hou Bi) with swelling and pain, grind with vinegar and gargle to expectorate phlegm. For carbuncles, swellings, and hemorrhoids, grind with vinegar and apply externally to resolve heat toxicity. Do not use seeds with high oil content. If ingested and poisoned, one will immediately suffer from trismus (lockjaw) and die. (If bitten by a mad dog, take one seed, slice it, decoct in one bowl of good wine until thoroughly extracted, remove the dregs, and drink; this also works without harm.)

Bitter, pungent, and cold. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Stops cough and descends Qi. (Long-term cough causes Lung heat; this herb cools it, causing Qi to descend and cough to stop.) Combined with Gancao (Licorice Root), it treats wheezing and急促 breathing due to Lung deficiency-heat. Burn to smoke and fumigate hemorrhoids. Sensation of a plum pit in the throat, unable to spit out or swallow down, with stuffiness and heat in the epigastrium; decoct and take 1 liang for cure. Remove the septum, take the clean seeds, and stir-fry before use. Excessive use in decoctions may induce vomiting. Contraindicated in patients with Lung deficiency-cold.
