This is Vitex negundo (Mujing).
Puerariae Radix (Gegen) serves as its guiding herb (shi). It fears Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao).
Bitter, slightly pungent. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Treats heart wind, head wind, and various wind syndromes of the limbs; resolves the muscle layer and induces sweating. Crush the leaves and tender tips into a paste and apply to snakebites to reduce swelling and blistering. (Frequently applying the extracted juice is also effective.) Combined with Schizonepetae Herba (Jingjie) and Piperis Longi Fructus (Bibo), decocted in water for rinsing, it treats wind-fire toothache.
Pungent, sweet. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Disperses wind-heat, opens the collaterals, guides out phlegm-saliva, promotes blood and qi circulation, stops xiao-ke (wasting-thirst), and resolves heat-dysentery. Treats mental oppression with fever, dizziness and vertigo due to head wind, nausea with a feeling of fullness in the heart, aphasia due to stroke, phlegm confusing the heart orifice, and pediatric heart-heat convulsive epilepsy. Combined with Bamboo Juice (Zhuli) and Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi), it treats wind-heat and wind-phlegm. (For those with qi deficiency unable to eat, use light bamboo juice; for those with excess qi able to eat, use Huangjing juice.)
Method for extracting juice: Use freshly harvested Huangjing stems cut to about one chi long, placed across two bricks, with fire burning underneath to roast them, collecting the exuded liquid at both ends with vessels. Take warm, or add to herbal preparations. It causes insomnia; contraindicated for those with qi deficiency and poor appetite.
Dislikes Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Wutou) and Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao).
Pungent, bitter, slightly warm. Enters the Qi aspect of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Searches out liver wind, dispels cold-dampness, relieves headache, stops eye pain, unblocks the nine orifices, kills white worms, treats damp-bi with spasms and contracture, and cures tinnitus and toothache. Combined with Iris lactea var. chinensis (Malin), it treats throat obstruction with jaw stiffness. Combined with Tribuli Fructus (Jili), it treats skin bi with numbness.
Remove the membrane, crush, steam with wine for use, or stir-fry with wine. Contraindicated for those with stomach deficiency (may induce phlegm diseases) and blood-deficiency headache.
Bitter, cold. Enters the Blood aspect of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Invigorates blood and moves qi, reduces swelling and detoxifies. Treats menstrual stasis and scantiness, and urinary retention. Combined with aged rice wine, it treats various lin-syndromes postpartum. Stir-fry with wine for use.
Sweet, slippery, slightly cold. Enters the Foot-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Moistens dryness and invigorates blood. Treats leukorrhea (red and white discharge), chronic dysentery due to intestinal wind, clears damp-heat, promotes urination, rubs on stubborn tinea corporis, and kills parasitic sores. For rubbing on tinea, soaking in soap water or grinding realgar (Xionghuang) with the soaked juice is particularly excellent.
Flower
Sweet, neutral, slippery. Efficacy is the same as the root bark. Combined with Oryza Sativa (Nuomi), it treats regurgitation and vomiting.
