By this stage, one can presumably become a great immortal, and only then can one learn Buddhism; this is what is meant.
The secret of sitting in stillness originally comes from Chan (Zen) Buddhism; Confucianism has no such practice. Since birth, people run around all day, chasing external things and forgetting to return to their origin. In movement, they are chaotic; in stillness, their minds are also disturbed. If they slightly gather their attention, they feel clear and bright. However, the subtleties involved here cannot be grasped without the guidance of a true master. One might either become complacent with little progress or even develop illnesses. Therefore, one must know where to turn for guidance.
In practicing stillness exercises, one must first clarify one's intention. If the intention deviates, one falls into wrong paths. For example, practitioners sit in stillness for fame and profit; because their will is dull and foolish, seeking to surpass others in intelligence; to escape worldly toil and retribution, desiring the peace of doing good; or to resolve life and death across countless kalpas, seeking the right path. True practitioners generate great vows. As the *Śūraṅgama Sūtra* states: "As long as even one sentient being has not attained Buddhahood, I shall never enter Nirvana here." It also says: "Dedicate this body and mind to the dust-like worlds." Thus, Bodhisattvas, though their bodies may temporarily leave sentient beings, their hearts always harbor compassion. In quiet places, they take the medicine of meditation and concentration, attain true wisdom, eliminate afflictions, manifest the six supernatural powers, and widely save sentient beings. Similarly, when Confucians live in seclusion, is it merely to keep themselves pure and forget the world? No, it is precisely to realize the aspiration that all things form one body.
Ancient sayings state: "Nourish Qi in quiet places; temper the spirit in noisy places." Gold cannot have its impurities removed unless refined by fire; the human heart cannot eliminate selfish desires unless tempered by affairs. If one can harmonize breath and gather the primordial spirit; practice preservation amidst movement, and practice stopping amidst interaction; standing as if in fasting, with hands and feet dignified; walking slowly, with steps synchronized with the mind; speaking calmly and peacefully, avoiding rashness and absurdity; ensuring all actions are dignified, detailed, leisurely, and peaceful. One should avoid delusions, wrongful acts, and erroneous behaviors. What benefit could there be other than from stillness exercises!
Historical records indicate that ordinary people often have unharmonious blood vessels, requiring medicinal regulation to bring them into balance. Without caution regarding substances, efficacy is not achieved; this is due to the careful handling of substances and dosages. "Qi" (齐) refers to "Ji" (剂), dosage/formula. Dosage is used to achieve efficacy, verified before use. From Tong Jun in the time of the Yellow Emperor, to Xu Situ in Northern Qi, Ying Sikong and Meng Cishi in Tang, Li Dangzhi a disciple of Hua Tuo, Tao Yinju in Liang, Sun Simiao in Tang, and other sages, there are too many to count. Generally, transmission occurs through verification and books. The use of a single herb determines life and death; how can human lives be used for experimentation? I deeply understand the principle of caution regarding substances in medicine. Whether treating the most ignorant or the humblest, I never fail to exert my full effort in compounding formulas. When treating the noble, I do so equally. Practicing medicine with caution ensures consistent skill and efficacy, unlike worldly physicians who treat the rich and poor differently, trembling in heart and hand when prescribing, thus failing to achieve results. How can they know that understanding the principle of caution reveals that the essence is neither entirely different nor entirely distinct? Due to closed-door affairs, I sought deeper medical principles. Soon, diseases called out to me one after another; verifying one case led to ten more. My travels were ceaseless, especially in the provincial capital. Among these were various prescriptions with remarkable efficacy, created according to symptoms rather than found in old texts. Therefore, I selected these effective prescriptions for printing, resulting in the *Collection of Verified Cases*. This was followed by discussions on symptom differentiation, pulse differentiation, and finally secret recipes for stillness exercises. Hence, this collection begins with *Verified Cases*.
**Verified Cases**
Minister Chen (courtesy name Tai, pseudonym □□, Vice Minister of Rites, commanding troops entering Fujian, stationed at Nantai). In mid-summer of the Jichou year, he accidentally contracted Cold Damage (Shanghan). By the eighth day, his eyes suddenly went black, he stared straight ahead, his body became cold, and he collapsed suddenly. Someone suggested pouring ginger soup down his throat. I said, "Incorrect." If caused by sudden rebellious Qi, ginger soup or Suhexiang Wan could be used. Now, his hands are extremely hot, indicating Heart Fire. His physique is obese, and he indulges in sexual activity. Summer heat touches him, Kidney Water declines downward, and Heart Fire flares upward. He requires Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) and Ginseng Root (Renshen). Administering these two herbs produced immediate effect.
Prescription
Coptis Rhizome (1 qian, stir-fried with ginger juice)
Ginseng Root (7 fen)
Boil in one bowl of water until reduced to half a bowl. Decoct the dregs again.
Minister Zu (courtesy name Zeyuan, pseudonym Qingyuan, Vice Minister of Rites, commanding troops entering Fujian). In summer of the Jichou year, he suffered from dysentery, defecating seventy to eighty times day and night. The pain was unbearable, passing only a few drops of bloody pus. He ate nothing, becoming extremely emaciated. This lasted over a month. All physicians worried, believing toxic vapors steamed the clear pathways, blocking the stomach opening, causing vomiting upon smelling food—a bad omen. Upon examining symptoms, his face was hot but body cool, pulse large and slippery. In prolonged illness, evil Qi grows daily, suggesting body heat, yet his body is cool. A cool body should not have a large pulse, yet his is large. Observing the Stomach pulse, it fluctuates between large and fine. I suddenly realized: "This is not a 'closed-mouth' dysentery." Because cold was contracted but not dispersed, accumulated cold exists above the stomach. Because summer heat was contracted but not cleared, accumulated heat exists below the stomach. Use hot herbs to open the cold in the stomach mouth, cool herbs to clear heat in the intestines, and tonify the severe deficiency of prolonged illness. After taking this medicine, he should drink within two days, eat within three, and consume meat and mutton by the fourth or fifth day—easily done. Listeners were shocked. After one dose, his condition halved that night; the next night, only eight or nine bowel movements; after three doses, his spirit revived, diet improved, and he recovered in five to six days.
Prescription
Cardamom Seed (1 qian)
Dried Ginger (roasted, 1 qian)
Coptis Rhizome (processed with Evodia Fruit, 1 qian)
Scutellaria Root (stir-fried with ginger juice, 1 qian)
Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (stir-fried with soil from old walls, 8 fen)
Ginseng Root (wrapped in large southern dates, roasted, 8 fen)
Add one black date, boil in one and a half bowls of water until reduced to seven-tenths. Take two doses daily.
Vice Governor-General Tong (courtesy name Guoding, pseudonym Huaidong, Governor of Fujian). In winter of the Wuzi year, during an early morning meal, his spirit was fresh. He ordered me to examine his pulse. I was surprised and said: "According to the pulse, cold has been present for six days. It will manifest after midnight tonight, entering the seventh day. Manifestation will be mild, resolving in seven days. If delayed by one or two days, it will worsen." Those present did not believe him, nor did the Governor-General, so he ordered me to prepare a formula for verification. That night, it indeed manifested. He took the prescribed formula and fully recovered in nine days. (This is the Ten Deities Decoction / Shishen Tang).
Governor-General Zhang (courtesy name Xuesheng, pseudonym Jie'an, Governor of Min Province). In summer of the Jichou year, he ordered me to examine his pulse but mentioned no illness. I examined carefully and said: "This pulse is abnormal; there must be Dampness. Dampness in the Spleen typically causes vomiting and numbness. However, this Dampness is different. Dampness resides in the center, blocking Qi communication between upper and lower. During daytime activity, Blood moves and Qi follows, posing no danger. But at night when quiet, there will be soreness and numbness in the lower half, as Yin easily agitates Dampness, worse on rainy days." Governor Zhang said: "Indeed, these symptoms exist." I said: "Vomiting is also specific. Dampness blocks the middle. Drinking water involves Yang Qi, which flows down easily, refreshing the chest and diaphragm. Eating involves Yin Qi; hard foods are difficult to swallow. Slight stagnation causes rebellion, leading to nausea and phlegm-saliva. Treatment should focus on unblocking Spleen Qi, allowing it to descend, preventing flaccidity and obstruction." After four doses of decoction and subsequent pills, the soreness and numbness ceased. Months later, after taking Gui Rong Paste, vomiting completely healed.
Prescription
Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome (soaked in rice wash water, stir-fried, 1 qian)
Agastache Leaf (1 qian)
Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (soaked in rice wash water, stir-fried with old wall soil, 1 qian)
Costus Root (5 fen)
Fennel Seed (lightly stir-fried, 5 fen)
Artemisia Capillaris Leaf (stir-fried with wine, 1 qian)
Add two slices of roasted ginger, boil in one and a half bowls of water until reduced to seven-tenths. Take before meals.
Gui Rong Paste (Angelica and Deer Antler Paste)
Angelica Sinensis Root (one jin, washed with wine, soaked overnight in good winter wine)
Deer Antler (one jin, washed with wine, sliced, soaked overnight in good red wine)
Ophiopogon Tuber (half jin, soaked in water, core removed)
Poria (four liang, soaked in water, core removed)
Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (four liang, washed in rice wash water, sliced, stir-fried with old wall soil)
Ginseng Root (four liang)
Costus Root (two liang, cleaned and powdered)
Cardamom Seed (two liang, shelled and powdered)
Licorice Root (two liang, powdered)
Radish Seed (two liang, lightly stir-fried and powdered)
Fritillaria Bulb (two liang, core removed and powdered)
Amomum Fruit (two liang, powdered)
Myrrh (one liang, powdered)
Musk (3 fen, mixed with Fritillaria and Myrrh into an ultra-fine powder)
Place the first six herbs (Angelica, Deer Antler, Ophiopogon, Poria, Atractylodes, Ginseng) in a copper pot. Add clear spring water floating eight inches above the herbs. Boil until reduced to one inch above the herbs. Add more water to float four inches above the herbs. Boil until reduced to one inch above. Strain through silk. Add the powders of Costus, Cardamom, Licorice, Radish Seed, and Amomum. Simmer over low heat into a thick syrup. Filter through silk cotton. Add one jin of refined honey. Stir constantly with a mulberry branch until it forms beads in water and does not disperse. Seal in a porcelain jar. Soak in water for five days and nights to remove fire energy. Take every morning and before bed, mixed with boiling water, in varying amounts. Alternatively, hold in the mouth after lying down to dissolve naturally. This paste nourishes Heart Blood, raises Kidney Water, strengthens Spleen and Stomach, clears phlegm, regulates Qi. Long-term use dispels disease, prolongs life, reverses aging. Treating vomiting, nausea, and acid regurgitation is merely a secondary effect.
Inspector-General Yang (courtesy name Gao, pseudonym Youhan, Inspector-General of Eight Min including Wenzhou Prefecture). In early autumn of the Jichou year, upon entering the pass, he fell ill. Multiple doctors treated him with medicine. Arriving at Yanping, I examined his pulse and said: "This is not a seasonal epidemic. Internal heat toxins have not been discharged, causing alternating chills and fever, and loss of appetite. Doctors did not understand and used tonifying Spleen, warming Essence, stopping sweat, and boosting Qi medicines. Consequently, his scrotum developed ulcers black as lacquer, insensitive to pain or itch. This indicates toxic vapors have retreated inward, very worrying. Fortunately, I recognize this syndrome. After taking my prepared medicine, his whole body initially ached, then itched. Half a month later, toxic sores erupted. He fully recovered in two months. (Many formulas cannot be fully recorded)."
Censor Huo (courtesy name Da, pseudonym Luzhai, inspecting Fujian Province). In early autumn of the Jichou year, amid summer heat, he developed a syndrome: whole-body pain, alternating chills and fever, urge to vomit but unable, urge to diarrhea but unable, plus malaria occurring every other day. Physicians attributed it to summerheat, believing heat trapped inside could not exit, using mostly Xiangru Yiyuan San. It was ineffective and worsened. I examined his pulse and said: "This is accumulated cold, not summerheat." Accumulated cold differs from acute cold exposure. Acute cold manifests immediately upon contraction; pores are cold, resisting internal heat steaming. Accumulated cold enters gradually: perhaps after eating, sleeping, or changing clothes. Today slight cold enters, tomorrow slight cold enters. Perhaps temporarily relieved by alcohol, but days later slight cold enters again. Touching summer heat triggers manifestation. Cold resides in Zang-Fu, heat on skin. Use pungent-hot herbs to remove cold. Once cold is gone, vomiting and diarrhea stop, and the body feels comfortable. Then use modified Xiao Chaihu Decoction to dispel malaria. Several doses led to full recovery.

Chief Examiner Hang (courtesy name Qisu, pseudonym Donghou, Censor of the Secretariat, presiding over exams in Fujian). He had a history of Depression-Blood Syndrome, urge to vomit but unable, hardest to endure. In autumn of the Wuzi year, grading papers exhausted his mind, causing severe flare-up. After leaving the examination hall, I examined his pulse and prescribed medicine with immediate effect. Half a month prior, he suddenly had leg pain, tendons in both feet contracted, heels stuck to legs, unable to walk. For nearly a month, medicines failed. Everyone considered it Flaccidity-Obstruction Syndrome. I said: "Incorrect." Observing his pulse, the left Cun position fluctuated between surging and choppy, slow and rapid without fixed rhythm. This person likes drinking cold wine. New wine is hot and drying; frozen drinks are cold and damp. Cold and heat struggle, causing this disease. Powder four herbs. Take one dose the night before. Next morning, he could walk. Three doses cured him completely.

Vice Governor Ding (courtesy name Wensheng, pseudonym Ruixuan, Provincial Administration Commissioner of Fujian). His wife, in winter of the Jichou year, due to unfamiliar climate, experienced rebellious Qi in chest and diaphragm, loss of appetite. Various medicines failed. She recovered briefly for two days on a formula, then relapsed like Esophageal Obstruction, even unable to breathe through the throat. Examining her pulse, I realized: "Ancient sages said: When Qi rebellion and blockage are severe, Qi carries Fire. Fear using cooked medicines; must grind raw medicines and take them." I prepared two herbs. One dose cured her.

Areca Seed (5 qian)
Bitter Orange (7 qian)
Grind raw in cold water and take.
Daozun He (courtesy name Ping, pseudonym Kuangshan, Provincial Grain Transport Commissioner). After his wife recovered from a seasonal illness, she had whole-body soreness, abdominal distension, loss of appetite, and intermittent chills and fever. Physicians treated it as deficiency and gave tonics, with no effect. I examined her pulse and said: "This is not deficiency. Evil Qi has not scattered, transmitting to collaterals. Fire exists in the Upper Jiao. Use clearing and cooling Qi-unblocking agents. Three doses cured her."

Daozun Gu (pseudonym Nanjin, Jianan Dao). In autumn of the Dinghai year, he contracted dysentery, unresolved by winter. I examined his pulse and said: "This is not dysentery. It must be from eating cold items, cold entering Spleen, deficiency entering Kidney. Using dysentery medicines is useless." Indeed, he had eaten too much lotus root. Starting with nausea, refusing food, leading to diarrhea turning into dysentery. Several doses of medicine cured him.

Daozun Huang (courtesy name Dingxiang, pseudonym Shanghou, Jianan Dao). In early autumn of the Jichou year, he suffered from malaria, occurring every three days. Daily affairs were burdensome, and he was elderly. Malaria lasted over a month, unable to eat, emaciated, weak Spleen. Medicines failed. I examined his pulse and said: "Every three days, heat without cold, interior excess without discharge, hot hands and feet, desire to vomit. This is weak Yin Qi with solitary Yang flare-up, called Dan Malaria. From Wu hour to You hour to Hai hour, Yin transforms. Water and Qi do not interact; Kidney deficiency. Treatment should involve raising [Yang], but physicians often use Scutellaria etc., making him weaker daily." I used modified Shengyang Yin, followed by Shenjie Pills, gradually recovering.

Vice Governor Zhu (courtesy name Dingxin, pseudonym Erjian, Provincial Administration Commissioner of Fujian). In autumn of the Dinghai year, he suffered from aphonia. Physicians attributed it to Wind-Heat, Phlegm-Fire, using Qingliang San. Each dose was ineffective. I examined his pulse and said: "This should not be treated as aphonia. Kidney Water does not ascend, Heart Blood is insufficient. Accidental exposure to Wind-Cold, failure to release exterior, led to Lung orifice closure." I prepared a formula. After three doses, Qi flowed. After five to six days, voice returned.

Daozun Zhu (courtesy name Zhengyuan, pseudonym Jingzhi, Military-Salt Commissioner of Fujian). In winter of the Wuzi year, he had a minor illness, recovering in two days. While playing chess, I examined his pulse and said: "Not yet. The contraction was heavy, manifestation light. Internal evil hides further. Verification suggests manifestation in four days: alternating chills and fever, headache, bone ache, back pain, stiff waist, transmitting meridians endlessly. Severe Cold Damage. Treat early knowing the root; fourteen days to recover. Otherwise, uncertain." Three days later, it manifested exactly as predicted. He took the formula and fully recovered in twenty days. (Formula recorded in Cold Damage Section).
Deputy Commander Zheng (courtesy name Eren, pseudonym Chongyu, Songxi Town Guard). In autumn of the Dinghai year, he had Blood Deficiency and weak Stomach. My treatment was effective. At his residence, a young newlywed man suffered from Yin Syndrome. By the sixth day, he collapsed suddenly, whole body cold. Parents prepared paper money and coffin. Chest air slightly warm, nose seemed to exhale. At second watch, Deputy Commander Zheng begged for help. I said: "This is Fire Syndrome." Phlegm closure prevents waking. Pulse should be hidden in both wrists, but big toes must be slightly warm. If physicians mistake this for Yin Collapse (Yin Jue) and mistakenly use Aconite and other hot medicines, it accelerates death. I gave one dose. Blown into throat, he woke. Second dose cured him.

His brother, Zhang Erguan, was critically ill, unable to eat, emaciated, Qi about to perish. For three months, seemed untreatable. I examined his pulse and said: "Your pulse is merely powerless and extremely weak. Why so critical? No other disease, must be evil." He bowed in shock, dismissed attendants, and told me: "Truly an Immortal Doctor! I met a beautiful woman in the office, slept with her for over two months. Knew she was demonic, wanted to reject her but couldn't. Likely destined for the underworld. How to save me?" I prepared a formula. He recovered in ten days. (This formula is too bizarre to record).
