In cases of drowning, hanging, or death from nightmare (Yan Si), immediately crush fresh Chinese chive (Jiucai) to extract juice and instill it into the nasal cavity. The effect is faster if mixed with powder of Sichuan pepper fruit (Zaojiao) and musk (Shexiang) for instillation.
For all "Five Extinctions" (Wu Jue: referring to five types of apparent death such as drowning, hanging, nightmare, freezing, and crushing), grind raw Pinellia Rhizome (Sheng Banxia) into powder, form pills the size of a bean using cold water, and insert them into the nostrils; recovery will occur. If there is still residual warmth in the heart region, treatment can be effective within one day. Additionally, moxibustion should be applied three moxa cones (Zhuang) at the Ren-26 (Renzhong) acupoint and at the line where the nail separates from the flesh on both big toes.
In cases of sudden death, blow raw Pinellia Rhizome (Sheng Banxia) powder into the nostrils. This method is also highly effective for treating postpartum syncope leading to loss of consciousness.
In cases of sudden violent death, hanging, or abrupt death, provided there is slight warmth in the heart area, take the yellow stem from the center of the scallion bulb (Cong Xin Huang Jing). Insert it into the left nostril for males and the right nostril for females, to a depth of three to four cun. If blood flows from the nose and eyes, it indicates that there is still vitality. In cases where phlegm-saliva floods the Heart, causing sudden collapse, immediately assist the person to sit upright in a warm room. Ignite charcoal, pour vinegar upon it to generate fumes, and direct the vapor into the nasal cavity to restore consciousness. Alternatively, crushing fresh Chinese chive juice and administering it down the throat is also excellent.
For wind-stroke (Zhong Feng), heatstroke (Zhong Shu), poisoning (Zhong Du), evil qi invasion (Zhong E), and dry Huoluan (Gan Huoluan: a condition characterized by inability to vomit or defecate), all rapid-onset acute conditions, administer fresh ginger juice mixed with urine of an uncircumcised boy (Tong Bian); immediate recovery follows. (In summer, for those who die from heatstroke, absolutely do not drink cold water. Immediately collect ash from the kitchen stove or hot earth from the road, pile it around the umbilicus to form a basin, and pour hot water or urine over it; immediate recovery occurs.)
Even in cases of severe trauma approaching death, as long as there is breath, administration of the above remedies can restore consciousness. For this prescription, harvest wild Chrysanthemum flowers (Ye Ju Hua) along with stems and leaves on the Double Ninth Festival (Chongyang) or in the eleventh lunar month, and dry them in the shade. Each time, use one liang of chrysanthemum flowers, add one bowl of urine of an uncircumcised boy and one bowl of unadulterated wine (Wu Hui Jiu), decoct together, and take hot; the effect is miraculous. If the patient has extremely weak breath and cannot speak, urgently administer one cup of Chinese chive juice mixed with urine of an uncircumcised boy; this is also effective.
Take Radix Sappanwood (Sumu), white hemp bark (Baima Pi), and fine wood ear fungus (Xi Mu'er), two qian of each. Roast them until charred on square tiles; the wood ear fungus should be roasted until thoroughly charred. Grind them together into powder, mix with yellow wine and brown sugar (Hei Tang), and take orally. After taking the medicine, drink enough wine to become intoxicated, then sleep in a draft-free place for one night; recovery will ensue.
Sichuan Hemp (Chuan Ma): 1 fen; Costus Root (Muxiang): 2 fen; Safflower (Honghua): 3 fen; Licorice Root (Gancao): 4 fen.
Grind all into powder and take with yellow wine. All herbs are used raw.
Millennium Calcined Stone (Qiannian Duanshi), Calomel (Qingfen), Dragon's Blood (Xuejie), and White Beeswax (Bai La). Grind into powder and apply externally. Cover with any available plaster; immediate recovery follows. When preparing the medicine, no specific quantity is required; use equal parts of each ingredient.
