First Aid Method for Self-Mutilation by Cutting the Throat: Self-mutilation by cutting the throat is a rapidly progressing condition that requires immediate intervention; delay may result in coldness of the forehead and cessation of breath, making rescue impossible. At the initial stage, if the patient's breath has not ceased and the body is not yet cold, immediately take one or two live chickens, tear off the hot chicken skin (cold skin is ineffective). Suture the wound with thread and wrap it for protection. Outside this, bind with soft silk fabric and cotton wool. Then, use old cloth foot-bindings worn by women to wrap around the area another five or six times to prevent air leakage, allowing natural healing. Instruct the victim to lie supine with a high pillow placed under the occiput to keep the head flexed and not straight, ensuring the wound remains closed. After three days, remove the previous dressings, apply Taohua San (Peach Blossom Powder) to the wound, or apply Yuhong Dan (Jade Red Pill), and cover externally with a large plaster for generating flesh and promoting tissue regeneration. Wrap again with silk fabric, suture tightly, and wait for muscle growth and completion of healing. (From *Jiangsu Hu Nie Tai Kan Chuan Fang*)
Appendix: Formula for Taohua San (Peach Blossom Powder): Duan Shi (Calcined Iron Ore, 2 sheng) and Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, 4 liang, sliced) are stir-fried together until Duan Shi turns red. Remove Da Huang, sieve into an extremely fine powder, store in a bottle, and let stand for over a month to dissipate "fire qi" before use.
Formula for Yuhong Dan (Jade Red Pill): Huang Dan (Lead Monoxide, 2 qian, stir-fried), Bai Long Gu (Fossilized Mammal Bones, 2 qian, calcined), and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 3 qian, calcined) are ground into a fine powder and stored in a bottle for use.
Plaster for Generating Flesh and Promoting Tissue Regeneration: Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Huang Qi (Astragalus Membranaceus Root), Shan Ci Gu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb), Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Xue Yu (Burnt Human Hair), Tian Ma (Gastrodia Elata Rhizome), Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Chuan Shan Jia (Pangolin Scales), Lu Feng Fang (Honeycomb), Wu Bei Zi (Chinese Gall), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root), Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Spike), Jin Yin Hua (Lonicera Japonica Flower), Bai Lian (Ampelopsis Radix), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Niu Bang Zi (Arctium Lappa Seed), and Bai Shao (White Peony Root) each 1 liang (net weight); Ma You (Sesame Oil, 3 jin). Boil according to standard method until herbs are charred and removed from dregs. Add Fei Huang Mi (Refined Lead Monoxide, 1.5 jin) to consolidate the ointment. Then add Bai Zhan (Yellow Beeswax), Huang Zhan (Red Beeswax), Xue Jie (Dragon's Blood), and Tong Lv (Malachite) each 2 liang. After cooling, add Qing Fen (Calomel), Ru Xiang (Olibanum/Gum Resin), Mo Yao (Myrrh) (each de-oiled), Long Gu (Fossilized Mammal Bones, calcined), Xiang Pi (Elephant Skin, fried), Zhang Nao (Borneol), Er Cha (Catechu), Chi Bai Zhi (Red and White Litharge) each 1 liang, She Xiang (Musk) 5 li, and Bing Pian (Borneolum Syntheticum) 2 qian. All ingredients should be processed into powder, mixed uniformly, and stored in a porcelain bottle for use.
Case of Self-Cutting with a Knife: An individual, due to an argument, cut their own throat with a knife. The wound was over 2 cun long, severing half of the esophagus and larynx. The wound bled profusely with severe pain, causing the person to roll on the ground, making dressing application difficult. The hands and feet were bound, and the patient was made to lie on a cool floor with a pillow supporting the head to allow gradual wound closure. "Tie Shan San" (Iron Fan Powder) was applied. Shortly after, blood coagulated. Half a day later, normal diet resumed, and full recovery occurred within three days. (From *Jin Chuang Tie Shan San Yi An*)
Case of Self-Cutting with a Razor: An individual, enraged by an argument, cut their throat with a razor. The esophagus and larynx were severed halfway, and blood bubbles appeared in the wound during breathing. This indicated that the qi in the throat had been damaged by the wound. A powdered medicine was applied. Shortly after, blood coagulated, and complete recovery occurred within two days. (Ibid.)
