Tongue-tied and upward-gazing due to sudden evil (Zhong'e Tian Diao) is caused by invasion of malignant ghostly qi. The eyes protrude upward and cannot look down, due to insufficient prenatal qi and loss of spiritual control; where deficiency exists, evil spirits can invade. Symptoms include a white complexion with a bluish tint or resembling earth color, upward gaze of the eyeballs, foaming at the mouth, spasms of the hands and feet, and a body cold as ice. It resembles convulsions (Jing Feng), but is not truly convulsions. Use Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Santalum Album (Tanxiang), Aquilaria Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang), Moschus (Shexiang), and Benzoin (Anshixiang), burning them around the infant. When the smoke fills the air like fog, the ghosts cannot remain. Once the infant regains consciousness slightly, bathe them in Prunus Persica Leaf Decoction (Taoye Tang). (Ibid.)
Use slices of single-clove garlic placed above, below, left, and right of the umbilicus, at a distance of five fen. Apply moxibustion for two cones (Zhuang), and it will subside. (*Youke Tiejing*)
Wear Ye Ming Sha (Pharbitidis Semen / Cacoctum) in a red gauze pouch. (*Zhizhi Fang*)
For infants with cleft lip or young girls with torn earlobes from pulling earrings, use a needle to gently prick both sides of the defect. Mix Calcinatum Plumbi Oxidum Rubrum (Huandan) and Alumen (Bai Fan) in equal parts into powder, apply to the wound to promote tissue regeneration; this is miraculous. (*Guxiangtang Manuscript*)
Take fresh Sesame Seeds (Yishuozha, one handful) and Scallion Heads (Congtou, one bunch), crush them separately, and place them in a copper basin. Have the infant sit on top, surround the basin, and pour boiling water into it to generate steam. Even in critical cases, immediate improvement occurs, ensuring safety and efficacy in every trial. (Ibid.)
Roast Bianteng until dry, grind into powder, mix with Rapeseed Oil (Caiyou), and apply externally for effectiveness. (Ibid.)
Another method: Use roots of Soybean (Huangdougen) after frost, mixed with Pod of Broad Bean (Can Dou Jia Ke), ground into powder, mixed with oil, and applied externally; also effective. (Ibid.)
Mix Suo Heixi (Baicaoshuang) and Cerussa (Qianfen) evenly, mix with oil, and apply. (Ibid.)
Grind Niao Chu Chong (Insects excreted in urine) into powder, apply to the affected area for immediate cure. (Ibid.)
For Mouth Thrush (E Kou Chuang), severe cases unable to suckle milk, and swelling/blockage of the throat, all caused by heat-toxin: Use Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) (each powdered to 8 fen), Realgar (Xionghuang), Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai), and Natrii Nitras (Huoxiao) (each 2 fen), along with Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), Borax (Pengsha), and Cinnabar (Zhusha) (each 1 fen). Grind all into an extremely fine powder. Take a small amount each time and insufflate into the mouth for cure. (*Shuoyue*)
