Book: Jijiu Liangfang (Effective Formulas for Emergency Rescue) Chapter: Pediatrics, Part 39 Category: Formulas
Treating newborns with foul matter in the mouth at birth: Immediately after birth, before crying occurs, wrap a finger with soft cloth or cotton, dip it into juice of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Gancao (Licorice Root), and wipe the foul fluid from the infant's mouth. Once stabilized, mix a small amount of honey with Zhusha (Cinnabar, approx. 0.5-1g) and apply to the mouth. This method calms the heart and spirit, detoxifies foul matter, and prevents skin sores and smallpox throughout life. Pregnant women should prepare this medicine before delivery.
Treating stillborn infants: Quickly check for blisters on the uvula in the infant's mouth. Puncture them with a finger, then use cloth-wrapped fingers to wipe away blood. If blood enters the throat, survival is impossible.
Treating newborns with weak breath unable to cry: This is likely due to difficult labor or cold in the stomach. Wrap the infant in cotton and hold close. Do not cut the umbilical cord yet. Burn the placenta in a charcoal stove. Create a large paper torch dipped in oil and ignite it; pass the flame back and forth over the umbilical cord. Then wash the cord with hot vinegar water. After a moment, when breathing returns and the infant cries normally, bathing and cutting the cord may proceed.
Treating newborns with inability to urinate or defecate and severe abdominal distension: Have a woman rinse her mouth with warm water and suckle seven points on the infant: front and back neck, chest center, below the navel, hands, and feet. Suckle each point 3-5 times, rinsing mouth between sites. Stop when the skin turns red. Passage will occur shortly. Without this, death is certain; with this method, it is a second chance at life.
Treating newborns with exposed red flesh (missing skin): Rapidly dust with early rice flour until new skin forms.
Treating newborn umbilical swelling: Wash with Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) water. Roast a scallion leaf over fire, remove heat by placing on ground, scrape thin with fingernails, and apply to the swollen area. Swelling subsides by the next day.

Peel when ready; bleeding is harmless. Delay leads to hard scars.
