Misconceptions regarding various types of Jing Feng (Convulsive Disorders) are detailed in the *Jicheng* (Collected Works). However, fearing that these erroneous customs may persist and be difficult to distinguish abruptly, several additional points are excerpted below.
Zhuang's *Fu You Bian* states: Ji Jing Feng (Acute Convulsive Disorder) belongs to Excess-Heat patterns; clearing heat is the method to treat Ji Jing Feng. Man Jing Feng (Chronic Convulsive Disorder) belongs to Deficiency-Cold patterns; warming and tonifying is the method to treat Man Jing Feng. These two conditions differ in Cold and Heat, and their medicinal prescriptions are as different as clouds and mud.
The *Jingyue Quanshu* states: The manifestations of Ji Jing Feng include high fever, phlegm obstruction, spasms and opisthotonos, tight jaw, hot breath from the mouth, red cheeks and lips, desire for cold drinks, constipation, dark urine, and a floating, surging, and rapid pulse. The manifestations of Man Jing Feng often result from vomiting and diarrhea, with weak breath and sluggish spirit, drowsiness with eyes half-open, phlegm rattling and shortness of breath, startle jumps and spasms, or intermittent episodes of agitation and calm, cool or hot body temperature, cold extremities, cyanotic or red lips, pale complexion, and a slow, weak, or fine-rapid pulse.
This is a condition of Phlegm-Fire Obstruction. In the initial stage, use Tongguan San (Pass-the-Gate Powder) to open the Lung orifices, see previous page. Subsequently, administer Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) 3 qian, along with Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Cheqian (Plantaginis Semen), and Gualou Shuang (Trichosanthis Pericarpium Pulveratum) each 1 qian.
Forehead redness, red lips, hot breath, tight jaw, and phlegm-saliva obstructing the throat with a roaring sound like tides is named Xian Chao (Tidal Saliva Flow). Use Jin Xing Meng Shi (Lepidolite), calcined and ground into fine powder, mixed with fresh Bohe juice (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba Juice) and white honey, taken with warm water. The medicine naturally wraps the phlegm, which is expelled via stool; this has been verified repeatedly. Another prescription: 20 roots of Dengxin Cao (Junci Medullae), each about 5 cun long; Chan Tui (Cicadae Periostracum), removing head, feet, and dorsal shell, using only the abdominal membrane, 14 pieces; Chen Sha (Cinnabaris) powder 3 qian. Tie tightly with new white gauze, bind with green thread, suspend the bundle on both sides of a clay pot, and place the pot suspended in water. Depending on the child's size, add half a cup of water and decoct to one cup, or add one cup of water and decoct to seven-tenths. Administer orally for immediate effect. If Chen Sha is used, it must be slightly clarified; do not consume the dregs. Another prescription: Use Locusts (Acrididae), roasted and powdered, 4-5 fen per dose, taken with Ginger Decoction for immediate cure. Another prescription: Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) each 1 qian, Zhu Li (Bambusae Succus) half a cup, added with 2 spoons of Jiang Zhi (Zingiberis Recens Juice) and 1 spoon of water, decocted and administered; highly effective for convulsions, fever, and phlegm. Another prescription: One large Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), powdered; one egg, separating the white from the yolk, mixed evenly with the aforementioned powder, applied around the infant's abdomen. Cun Jin Dan (Golden Pill of Inch) is very effective for treating Ji Jing Feng; the formula is found in the Internal Medicine section under "Spleen and Stomach". Bao Long Wan (Dragon-Holding Pill) is also effective for treating Ji Jing Feng.
