Treats excessive Heart Fire in the upper jiao and surplus Heat in the diaphragm. Symptoms include red eyes, dizziness, mouth ulcers, cracked lips, hematemesis or epistaxis, thick and sticky saliva and cough, and dysuria or constipation.
Manifestations of macules and rashes, blackening and sinking of sores and pustules, various wind syndromes causing convulsions and spasms, pulling and cramping pain in the hands and feet.
Herbs: Qiaomiao (Forsythiae Fructum), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), plus two Jujubae Fructus and one Congen Stolon.
This is Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder) added with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Zhuye (Bambusae Folium). After decoction, strain the dregs, add a small amount of honey, and take warm. If there is headache, add Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
Commentary: Stroke syndromes are generally caused by Wind-Wood combining with Ministerial and Sovereign Fires to cause disease, often manifesting as Diaphragm Heat. Ancient formulas use Liangge San most frequently, not just the two formulas mentioned above.

Formula seen in Volume 9, Upper Section, under "Eliminating Phlegm".
Treats wind-phlegm failing to descend, producing sounds in the throat like sawing, or swelling and fullness due to dampness invasion.
Herbs: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, fourteen large ones), Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina, one, roasted), chopped for one dose. Decoct in two cups of water until one cup remains. Add a little fresh juice of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and take.
This formula uses Banxia to treat phlegm-phlegm and Ya Zao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) to treat wind, combined into a prescription. It addresses the situation where formless wind pathogens carry tangible phlegm, binding together and refusing to separate. Using these two... [Text fragment: Ya Zao Ci]
Treats flaccidity of the four limbs, vague spirit, loss of consciousness, and inability to speak.
Herbs: Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), Sheng Ge Zhi (Puerariae Radix Juice, two sheng), Shengjiang Zhi (Zingiberis Recensis Juice, two he), mixed evenly. Divide into three warm doses. Commentary: Accumulated phlegm and heat in the human body often attract external wind; this formula can be taken frequently... [Text fragment ends abruptly].

Herbs: Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, processed), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, soaked in decoction).
Commentary: Stroke syndromes often involve Heat-Phlegm, and obese individuals typically have pre-existing Heat-Phlegm. Treating both left and right sides as phlegm syndromes is indeed appropriate. However, obese individuals often have... [Text fragment: Deficient Wind]
