(Li Dongyuan) Treats internal cataracts with corneal opacity, and dilated pupils, caused by excessive mental labor and irregular diet.
Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi) (each 5 qian), Chebulae Fructus (Hezi) (wrapped in wet paper and roasted), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Fen Gancao) (2 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Guishen) (3 qian).
Decoct with two bowls of water.
Bupleuri Radix and Ephedrae Herba disperse the exterior and scatter pathogenic factors; Angelicae Sinensis Radix and Rehmanniae Radix harmonize the Liver and nourish Blood. Coptidis Rhizoma clears Liver Fire, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma harmonizes the Middle Jiao (Spleen and Stomach). Because the pupils are dilated, Chebulae Fructus is added...
Treats sores and rashes invading the eyes, as well as dim vision and corneal opacity.
Leporis Faeces (Tu Shi) (2 qian), taken with tea decoction or swallowed directly. It must be administered only after the sores and rashes have healed. The rabbit is the essence of the moon, receiving the Qi of Metal, and its feces are named "Ming..."
(Li Dongyuan, also known as Shu Di Huang Wan) Treats weak Blood and deficient Qi failing to nourish the Heart, leading to flourishing Heart Fire and self-sufficiency of Liver Wood, resulting in dilated pupils and blurred vision. (The Liver is the Mother of the Heart; the Child can cause the Mother to become excess. Thus, when Heart Fire is flourishing, Liver Wood becomes excess. The Liver governs Wind, and the Heart governs Fire; dilated pupils are a sign of Wind and Fire agitation. When Water fails to control Fire, the clear and harmonious Qi becomes chaotic, and Essence and Fluids scatter accordingly. When Essence scatters, the luster is lost, hence blurred vision. *Ben Cao Gang Mu* states: The Heart vessels connect to the eye system, the Liver vessels connect to the eye system, and the Shaoyin and Shaoyang vessels of the hand and foot link to the outer canthus. Wind-Heat attacks the head and eyes from this pathway, causing hemi-cranial headache and swelling. Dilated pupils and blurred vision are due to Blood deficiency and Yin weakness. One should cool the Blood and nourish it, restrain Fire and dissipate constrained Fire, thereby eliminating Wind-Heat.)
Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shu Di) (1 liang), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi) (one prescription uses 1.5 liang, another uses 7.5 qian), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) (8 qian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) (stir-fried with wine), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (washed with wine, 5 qian), Huang... (text incomplete)... Honey pills, taken with tea decoction.
Nourishes Blood; Rehmanniae Radix and Lycii Cortex (Digupi) cool the Blood; [herbs] restrain consumption and gather dispersion; Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan...)...
Treats redness, swelling, and pain of the eyes. (Wind-Heat damaging the Blood causes redness; excess Wind-Heat causes swelling; attacking and pouring Wind-Heat causes pain. The lateral aspect of the eye is the outer canthus, and the medial aspect near the nose is the inner canthus. The upper part is the outer canthus, the lower part is the inner canthus. Eye pain with red vessels extending from top to bottom indicates Taiyang syndrome, suitable for warm dispersal; extending from the outer canthus inward indicates Shaoyang syndrome, suitable for harmonization.)
Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Persicae Semen (Taoren) (deprived of skin and tips), Carthami Flos (Honghua) (stir-fried with wine), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) (0.5 fen), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui)...
Schizonepetae Spica, Saposhnikoviae Radix, Ephedrae Herba, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Chrysanthemi Flos, and Viticis Fructus are light and floating, ascending upward, capable of dispelling Wind and clearing Heat. Persicae Semen, Carthami Flos, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, and Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao) possess acrid-dispersing and sour-astringent properties, jointly... belonging to the Liver... belonging to the Exterior...
