(Jiyao) Treats stroke manifesting as loss of motor control in the limbs, stiff tongue with inability to speak, where wind pathogens are scattered across various meridians without being confined to a single one.
Qin Jiao Tang (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Decoction): Rhizoma Ligustici Wallichii (Qin Jiao), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao, 3 liang), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui, washed with wine), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Bai Shao, stir-fried with wine), Rhizoma Chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong), Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shu Di Huang), Radix Rehmanniae Recens (Sheng Di Huang, washed with wine), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Bai Zhu, stir-fried with earth), Poria (Fu Ling, 5 qian). Dosage: 1 liang per administration.
This is also a general formula for stroke affecting the six meridians. Stroke is caused by deficient evil. If it lingers and does not depart, the pathology becomes excess; thus, a formula that expels wind and nourishes blood is used to treat both aspects.
(Liu Hejian) Treats stroke manifesting as aphasia (tongue muteness with inability to speak) and paraplegia (feet useless with inability to walk). This is due to the reversal of Qi in the Shaoyin meridian failing to reach its destination, named Feng Fei (Wind Paraplegia). It requires urgent warming treatment.
(Feng Fei resembles paralysis.)
Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shu Di Huang), Radix Morindae Officinalis (Ba Ji Tian, heart removed), Fructus Corni (Yu Rou), Caulis Cistanches (Rou Cong Rong, washed with wine), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fu Zi, processed), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guan Gui), Radix Dendrobii (Shi Hu), Poria (Fu Ling), Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Shi Chang Pu), Radix Polygalae (Yuan Zhi).
Radix Rehmanniae Preparata nourishes the Yin of the root; Ba Ji Tian, Rou Cong Rong, Guan Gui, and Fu Zi restore the fire of the True Yuan. Radix Dendrobii stabilizes the Spleen and secures Qi; Fructus Corni warms the Liver and consolidates Essence.
(Yi Lao) Nourishes Blood, Expels Wind, Strengthens Tendons and Bones.
Rhizoma Gastrodiae (Tian Ma, expels wind), Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niu Xi, strengthens tendons; these two are soaked together in wine for three days, then dried by baking); Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae (Bi Xie, expels wind-dampness and strengthens tendons/bones); Radix Scrophulariae (Xuan Shen); Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fang Feng).
The main intent of this formula is to treat wind generated from Kidney Heat. Processing Tian Ma with Niu Xi utilizes their descending action. Doubling the dosage of Dang Gui and Di Huang generates Yin and Blood.
(Zhang Yong) Treats stroke manifesting as facial deviation (wind invading the meridians), speech impediment (qi stagnation), flaccid limbs and bone pain (wind combined with dampness), and wandering pain of wind-bi.
Gan Cao (Licorice Root), best harvested on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, 7th day of the 7th lunar month, or 9th day of the 9th lunar month. Quantity不限, remove coarse stems, retain leaves, branches, flowers, and fruits, removing all impurities.
... The efficacy lies entirely in...
It can expel wind and scatter dampness, and move the Qi of the Large Intestine. However, wind-dispelling herbs are ultimately drying. If wind-bi is due to deficiency of both Spleen and Kidney, with insufficient Yin and Blood, rather than being caused by wind-dampness...
