To treat heat accumulation in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), causing redness and swelling of the eyes, pain, or the formation of nebulae (corneal opacities), first administer Xigan San (Liver-Washing Powder), followed by this prescription.
Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) (each two liang); Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit, stir-fried with bran); Chantui (Cicada Slough, wings and feet removed); Bohe (Mint); Longdancao (Gentian Root); Gancao (Licorice Root) (each five qian).
Grind all into a fine powder. Take two qian per dose, after meals.
To treat excessive internal fire and heat accumulation attacking the eyes, resulting in nebulae and pain.
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) (two qian); Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (three qian).
Decoct in water and take before meals.
This formula can tonify the Qi of the Liver and Kidneys. After taking Huanjing Wan (Eye-Clarifying Pill), this medicine should be taken frequently.
Taijiao (Zanthoxylum Fruit, stir-fried); Xianlingpi (Epimedium Leaf); Baijili (Tribulus Fruit, stir-fried and thorns removed).
Mix equal parts and grind into a fine powder. Make pills using wine paste, sized like wu-tzu (wu-tzu is a traditional unit of size, roughly equivalent to a mustard seed). Take thirty pills on an empty stomach with rice gruel.
To treat eye dizziness and swelling, and red sores at the inner and outer canthi.
Wubeizi (Chinese Gall) (one liang, ground into powder; take three qian per dose; decoct in one cup of water until reduced to eight-tenths; wash the area first, then apply with the tip of a chopstick.)
To treat deafness.
Mahuang (Ephedra Herba) (one jin [500g]; decoct in five sheng [approx. 1 liter] of water until reduced to one sheng; filter the dregs and continue boiling to make a paste. Take one qian seven fen per dose, with warm wine before bed. Effect occurs when sweating appears.)
People find moxibustion pain unbearable; after taking this medicine, they fall into a deep sleep, feel no pain, and are not harmed.
Shanqiehua (Datura Flower, harvested in August); Huomahua (Hemp Flower, harvested in August).
(Note: By mid-August, hemp flowers may be past their prime; July harvesting is likely more appropriate.)
When harvesting these two flowers, one must remain solemn, keep the mouth closed, and harvest with coordinated movements. If two people harvest together, or if they laugh or speak, the patient will also laugh or speak after taking the medicine. Grind the harvested flowers together into a fine powder. Take three qian per dose for adults, one qian for children. Administer with tea or wine freely. One dose induces sleep, allowing for fifty moxa cones (zhuang) to be applied. Upon waking, administer another dose and continue moxibustion.
(Note: Shanqiezi is now known as Fengqie'er; its flower is also called Manduoluo Hua (Datura Flower). Huoma refers to Cannabis Sativa. The yellow hemp planted in gardens today is this species. Bencao Gangmu states: Datura grows in northern lands, and southerners also cultivate it. It sprouts in spring and grows in summer, with a single stem rising straight up, four to five chi high, without lateral branches. It has green stems and leaves resembling eggplant leaves. In August, it bears white flowers with six petals, larger than Convolvulus flowers, folded in the center and wrapped by adjacent leaves, opening in the morning and closing at night. It bears round fruits with spiky protrusions containing small seeds. Harvest flowers in August, fruits in September. Both flowers and fruits are acrid, warm, and toxic. They treat various wind syndromes, cold-damp bi syndrome (arthralgia), epilepsy, and rectal prolapse. Legend has it that if the flower is harvested while laughing and soaked in wine, drinking it causes laughter; if harvested while dancing, it causes dancing. I have tried this. Drinking to half-intoxication, then having someone laugh or dance to guide the effect yields results. Another method says: harvest Hemp Flower in July and Shanqie Flower in August, dry in shade, mix in equal parts, and take three qian mixed with warm wine. Soon after, one feels dizzy as if drunk, and cutting sores or applying moxibustion causes no pain. This is an ancient prescription. The anesthetic used in modern surgery is this powder; it causes no harm when taken.)
