Humans, due to the seven emotions and six desires, as well as exposure to cold in the body and consumption of cold food and drink, damage the Lung Qi (Lung Energy), leading to cough, discomfort in the chest and diaphragm, aversion to cold with fever. One may take Quanzhen Dan (Complete True Pill). If cold-natured medicines are taken, it will severely injure the Lung Qi further, causing chest and diaphragm fullness and oppression, coma with rebellious Qi rushing upward, spitting out cold water from the mouth (feeling like holding ice and snow), fatigue in the four limbs, and gradual reduction in dietary intake. This is cold Qi entering the Lungs and invading the Gaohuang (Gao-Huang) region, also known as Cold Lao (Cold Consumption). First, take Jinye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill) to eliminate the cold pathogen, then use Jiangfu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) for ten days to achieve a cure. Alternatively, take Wuge San (Five Diaphragms Powder) or Cuoqi San (Grasping Qi Powder) to remove cold Qi from the Lungs; for severe cases, moxibustion on Zhongfu (LU-1) acupoint for three hundred moxa cones can lead to recovery. (The injury from exposure to cold and consumption of cold food/drink is initially not very deep or severe. However, physicians who do not understand this syndrome mistakenly administer cooling medicines, causing the cold to accumulate and harden like ice, resulting in disease in the Gaohuang region. By the time there is rebellious Qi, spitting of cold water, and unceasing alternating chills and fever, if one does not consider switching to warming and tonifying methods, but instead continues to use yin-nourishing and heat-clearing prescriptions, it leads to death. It is not the disease that kills, but the physician.)
Case Record:
A person consumed cold food during the summer months, injuring Lung Qi, resulting in cough and chest/diaphragm discomfort. He first took one hundred pills of Jinye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill), which resulted in one bowel movement, reducing pain by three parts. Then he took Wuge San (Five Diaphragms Powder), and his condition stabilized. However, he felt frequent recurrences. Five years later, it flared up severely again. Moxibustion was applied to Zhongfu (LU-1) acupoint for five hundred cones. Subsequently, extremely foul-smelling turbid gas was discharged, which was unbearable to smell. After this, the condition never recurred again. (Worldly physicians fail to examine the cause of the disease, often claiming that summer heat damages the Lungs, and thus prescribe a regimen of cold-cooling herbs, causing water qi to fail to dissipate and transforming into a major illness.)
The Lungs prefer warmth and dislike cold. If cold pathogen enters the Lungs or injury occurs from cold/raw foods, and庸医 (quack physicians) use cold-natured medicines to freeze and stagnate the Lung Qi, it results in Geye Bing (Diaphragm and Dysphagia Disease). The patient feels a sensation of obstruction in the throat, unable to swallow soup or water. Urgent moxibustion on Mingguan (Mingguan) acupoint for two hundred cones will naturally cause Lung Qi to descend, leading to recovery. (Most deaths from dysphagia are due to blockage in the throat preventing food intake. Physicians fear using hot-warm medicines and mostly use cold-cooling and moistening agents seeking their nourishing effects; how can life be saved? Using Mr. Dou's moxibustion method is excellent, yet people cannot trust and adopt it. Why?)
There is another syndrome of Lung Cold, which causes slight headache, abundant clear nasal discharge, hoarseness, aversion to cold, stiffness and spasms in the shoulders and back, and a pulse that is slightly floating and tight. One should take Huagai San (Canopy Powder); for severe cases, Jiangfu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction). Cold foods must be avoided. This syndrome must not be mistaken for Lao Zheng (Consumption Syndrome) and treated as such; therefore, it is presented here for clarification. (Physicians of the world do not recognize the syndrome of Lung Cold and fail to use warming-dispersing methods. Instead, they use herbs such as Sangbai Pi (Morus Bark), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Yuzhu (Polygonatum Rhizome), which are cloying and trap the cold pathogen, creating many weak syndromes.)
