1. Hemiplegia and dysarthria caused by wind-stroke are due to deficiency and damage of Kidney Qi. Moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 500 moxa cones.
2. Shaoyin syndrome in cold damage, characterized by slow and large pulses in all six positions, lethargy with muttering, heaviness of the body as if weighted down, or appearance of black spots on the skin, belching, expectoration, abdominal distension, and coldness of the toes extending beyond the joints, requires urgent moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones to ensure survival.
3. Taiyin syndrome in cold damage, characterized by cool body temperature and cold feet extending beyond the joints, wiry and tight pulses in all six positions, yellowing of the skin with purple spots, excessive salivation, irritability and fever, and belching, requires urgent moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) and Mingguan (extra point, often referring to Pishu area) for 300 moxa cones each.
Among cold damage syndromes, only these two are extremely rapid in causing harm. Zhang Zhongjing identified Shaoyin syndrome merely by dry tongue and mouth thirst, and Taiyin syndrome by abdominal fullness and spontaneous diarrhea, categorizing the rest under Yang syndromes, thus leading to fatal errors. However, if these two syndromes are not treated early with moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) to rescue Kidney Qi, and on Mingguan to secure Spleen Qi, life cannot be preserved. The Spleen and Kidney are the roots of the entire body and must be attended to promptly. (Dry tongue and mouth thirst is essentially a heat syndrome of Shaoyin; Zhang Zhongjing used Da Cheng Qi Tang for urgent purgation. However, this principle can only be understood by those who have deeply studied Zhang's school and applied by those proficient in his methods. If fire and heat are rampant without control, they cause devastation like a prairie fire and stop the mechanism of generation; how can one not fear this? If there is false heat with latent true cold, using Cheng Qi Tang will immediately lead to danger and death. Mr. Dou's moxibustion method is truly essential for preserving life. Medical practitioners must examine carefully and not act rashly. Zhang Zhongjing used Cheng Qi Tang based on Qi transformation; if involving structural organs, there are other treatments, which must not be confused.)
4. Brain carbuncle, back carbuncle, and various malignant sores require moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones to protect Kidney Qi.
5. Acute throat obstruction, swelling of the chin and jaw, inability to swallow food and water, are caused by deficiency of Stomach Qi and invasion of Wind-Cold into the Lungs. Moxibustion should be applied to Tiantu (CV-22) for 50 moxa cones. (The acupoint is located four cun below the laryngeal prominence.)
6. Deficiency consumption with cough, tidal fever, hemoptysis, and hematemesis, with wiry and tight pulses in all six positions, indicates damage and impending collapse of Kidney Qi. Urgent moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones, combined with internal administration of Baoyuan Dan, can preserve life. Administration of Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, Rehmannia, and Achyranthes Pill) will cause immediate death because bitter-cold herbs severely damage Yang Qi. (Deficiency consumption resulting in wiry and tight pulses signifies loss of Kidney Qi. Nowadays, physicians treating deficiency consumption still use cold-cool herbs even when the pulse is minute, fine, and rapid, treating human lives as if they were grass. Such people do not know what their outcome will be.)
7. Edema and abdominal distension, urinary retention, asthma preventing lying flat, are caused by severe damage to Spleen Qi. Urgent moxibustion on Mingguan for 200 moxa cones to save Spleen Qi, followed by moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones to support Kidney Water, will allow natural metabolism and elimination.
8. Spleen diarrhea with watery stools, caused by damage to Spleen and Kidney Qi, can be fatal within two to three days. Moxibustion should be applied to Mingguan and Guanyuan for 200 moxa cones each.
9. Chronic dysentery with discharge of five-colored pus is caused by damage to Spleen Qi and can be fatal within half a month. Moxibustion should be applied to Mingguan and Guanyuan for 300 moxa cones each.
10. Cholera with vomiting and diarrhea is caused by cold substances injuring the Stomach. Moxibustion should be applied to Zhongwan (CV-12) for 50 moxa cones. If the limbs are cold and the six pulses are minute and fine, indicating impending collapse of Yang Qi, urgent moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones is required.
11. Malaria is formed by accumulation of cold substances and usually resolves spontaneously within ten days or half a month. If it persists, it becomes Spleen Malaria due to Qi deficiency, and prolonged cases lead to exhaustion of Yuan Qi and death. Moxibustion should be applied to Zhongwan (CV-12) and Left Mingguan for 100 moxa cones each.
12. Jaundice with yellowing of the eyes and whole body, and red urine, is caused by cold substances injuring the Spleen. Moxibustion should be applied to Left Mingguan for 100 moxa cones, and cooling medicines are contraindicated. If accompanied by Black Jaundice, it is due to sexual excess injuring the Kidneys, requiring additional moxibustion on Mingguan for 300 moxa cones.
13. Regurgitation (vomiting immediately after eating) is caused by irregular diet damaging Spleen Qi. Moxibustion should be applied to Mingguan for 300 moxa cones. (Mingguan here likely refers to Mingmen (GV-4).)

First administer Shuisheng San, then moxibustion on Jueque (CV-14) for 70 moxa cones. After the moxa blister heals, apply moxibustion to Zusanli (ST-36) for 50 moxa cones.
16. Unremitting hypochondriac pain is caused by dietary injury to the Spleen. Moxibustion should be applied to Left Mingguan for 100 moxa cones.
17. Pain connecting both hypochondria and the heart is caused by anger injuring the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney meridians. Moxibustion should be applied to Left Mingguan for 200 moxa cones and Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones.
18. Lung Cold with chest and diaphragm distension, frequent regurgitation of acid, counterflow Qi attacking upward, feeling full after eating, fatigue and weakness, and sensation of holding ice and snow in the mouth, is named Cold Consumption or Gaohuang Disease. It is caused by cold substances injuring the Lungs and subsequent administration of cooling medicines damaging Lung Qi. Moxibustion should be applied to Zhongfu (LU-1) bilaterally for 200 moxa cones each.
19. Cough disease caused by exposure to cold and drinking cold liquids, which dissipates Lung Qi, requires moxibustion on Tiantu (CV-22) for 50 moxa cones.
20. Persistent chronic cough stops after moxibustion on Feishu (BL-13) bilaterally for 50 moxa cones each. If cough persists long-term after cold damage or in middle age, fearing progression to deficiency consumption, moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones.
21. Leprosy is caused by sleeping in damp and windy places, absorbing toxic vapors that enter the five Zang organs, causing facial swelling like dark clouds, prickling sensations over the whole body, or numbness in both hands. Moxibustion should be applied to the Five Shu points of the Zang organs. Start with Feishu (BL-13), then Xinshu (BL-15), Pishu (BL-20), Ganshu (BL-18), and Shenshu (BL-23), 50 moxa cones each, cycling repeatedly until cured.
22. Dry heat occurring in summer months is caused by cold substances injuring Spleen, Stomach, and Kidney Qi. Moxibustion should be applied to Mingguan for 200 moxa cones. If there is chest oppression and pain, moxibustion should be applied to Left Mingguan for 50 moxa cones. Administering cooling medicines for suspected heatstroke will cause death.
23. Formulas for wind-stroke often recommend moxibustion on Baihui (GV-20), Jianjing (GB-21), Quchi (LI-11), and Zusanli (ST-36) with little effect; this is not the orthodox method of Yellow Emperor. Moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for 500 moxa cones is infallible.
24. Aphonia in wind-stroke is caused by damage to Lung and Kidney Qi, failing to generate Metal and Water. Moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 500 moxa cones.
25. Intestinal bleeding persisting for a long time is caused by cold food damaging Large Intestine Qi. Moxibustion should be applied to Shenque (CV-8) for 300 moxa cones.
26. Constipation in deficiency consumption patients, the elderly, and post-illness patients, where laxatives are difficult to tolerate, resolves naturally after moxibustion on Shenque (CV-8) for 100 moxa cones.
27. Hematuria is caused by sexual exertion damaging Kidney Qi. Moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 200 moxa cones.
28. Gravel stranguria unresponsive to other medicines is caused by deficiency fire in the Kidneys condensing. Moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones.
29. Shang Xiao (Upper Wasting-Thirst) involves drinking three to five sheng of water daily. It is caused by congestion and heat in the Heart and Lungs, compounded by cold food injuring Lung and Kidney Qi. Moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for 100 moxa cones can prevent death. Alternatively, moxibustion on Qihai (CV-6) in spring and Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones in autumn generates saliva.
30. Zhong Xiao (Middle Wasting-Thirst) involves polyphagia with emaciated limbs, fatigue, and weakness, caused by Spleen and Kidney deficiency. Moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 500 moxa cones.
31. Numbness of waist and legs and lack of strength in walking are caused by sexual excess damaging the Kidneys, leading to bone萎 (bone atrophy/osteoporosis). Urgent moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for 500 moxa cones is required.
32. Dullness and loss of consciousness, indecision in eating, alternating between lying and sitting, walking and standing, with unknown pathology, is caused by excessive thinking consuming Heart Blood. Moxibustion should be applied to Jueque (CV-14) for 50 moxa cones.
33. Spleen disease causing dark yellow complexion and poor appetite requires moxibustion on Left Mingguan for 50 moxa cones.
If accompanied by sallow-dark color, it indicates Kidney damage, requiring additional moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for 200 moxa cones.
34. Thief-Wind entering the ear causing deviation of the mouth and eye requires moxibustion on Dicang (ST-4) on the affected side for 50 moxa cones, or 14 moxa cones.
35. Scorched and withered ears and gradually darkening face are caused by Kidney exhaustion. Moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 500 moxa cones.
36. In persons above middle age, dry mouth and tongue are caused by Kidney Water failing to generate fluids. Moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones. Misadministration of cooling medicines will injure the Spleen and Stomach and cause death.
37. In persons above middle age, pain in the waist, legs, and joints is a sign of exhausted Kidney Qi invaded by Wind pathogen. Moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones. Administration of pungent-warm wind-dispelling drugs will further deplete Kidney Water and become incurable.
38. Red and swollen thighs are caused by Wind pathogen attaching to bones due to Kidney Qi deficiency, fearing development of osteomyelitis (bone abscess). Moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 200 moxa cones.
39. Elderly patients with loose bowels, heaviness, Yang Qi collapse, and urinary incontinence require moxibustion on Shenque (CV-8) for 300 moxa cones.
40. Asthma in the elderly is caused by Kidney deficiency failing to anchor Qi. Moxibustion should be applied to Guanyuan (CV-4) for 200 moxa cones.
41. Fecal incontinence in the elderly is caused by decline of Spleen and Kidney Qi. Moxibustion should be applied to Left Mingguan and Guanyuan (CV-4) for 200 moxa cones each.

44. Tetanus with locked jaw and stiff neck and back requires moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV-4) for 100 moxa cones.
45. Cold-damp lower back pain requires moxibustion on Yaoshu (GV-2) for 50 moxa cones.
46. Sudden stabbing pain in knees and legs while walking is caused by Wind-Damp invasion. Apply 30 moxa cones to the painful spot.
47. Podagra (Gout/Foot Qi) with weakness, numbness, or pain requires moxibustion on Yongquan (KI-1) for 50 moxa cones.
48. Stubborn eczema spreading or infantile tinea capitis are caused by sweating and entering water, allowing dampness to invade the skin and hair. Apply 3 moxa cones separated by three cun at the lesion site; cure occurs upon discharge of yellow fluid.
When moxibusting adults, the moxa cone should be the size of a lotus seed, with a base width of three fen. After 20 cones, reduce the size by one fen, ensuring it is tightly packed. For extremities and children, the cone should be the size of a cocklebur. For head and face, the cone should be the size of a wheat grain. Ash should be swept away with a goose feather, never blown off by mouth.
Moxibustion is contraindicated for manic-depressive patients. For those accustomed to rich diets who fear pain, administer Shuisheng San first, then moxibustate. One dose allows for 50 cones; after waking, administer another dose and continue moxibustation.
