Chen Feixia stated: When an infant is first born, to determine whether they are ill or healthy, one may pinch their scalp and palpate the skull. If the infant does not cry, it indicates good health. By probing the mouth with a finger, if the infant makes sounds but sucks the finger calmly, any illness present is likely mild. However, if the infant cries immediately without sucking the finger, has a complexion that is cyanotic, reddish, and purplish, suffers from trismus (lockjaw), or cannot take milk, this is due to severe cold acquired at birth, with wind pathogen invading the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Urgent treatment is required to restore stability.
For newborns who appear plump with tender skin and look aesthetically pleasing, this suggests a weak constitutional foundation, which is a very unfavorable omen; such infants are most susceptible to wind-cold invasion. If the pathogen enters the Fu organs, symptoms typically manifest within two to three days. Symptoms include regurgitation of milk, nocturnal crying, and borborygmus (abdominal rumbling); these all belong to the category of fetal wind. Although the condition is superficial and easy to treat, whole-body moxibustion with lamp wicks is indicated, with a high success rate. If the pathogen enters the Zang organs, symptoms manifest much later, around six to seven days, indicating conditions such as neonatal tetanus (umbilical wind), lockjaw, or pursed-lip syndrome. Cases involving trismus, enlarged tongue, and phlegm obstruction are incurable. This is because the disease has transmitted to the internal organs, affecting the Heart, Spleen, and Lung meridians. The excessive wind pathogen has no outlet for release, manifesting physically in the throat, mouth, jaw, and voice.
Tu Weisheng commented: Regarding the statement that "newborns who are plump with tender skin and look pleasing indicate a weak foundation and are a bad omen," this is likely not an absolute conclusion. It is unclear whether Zishan (Chen Feixia's pseudonym) derived this from clinical experience or from other sources. Physicians should only refer to it and not hastily accept it as definitive truth.
Infants born with body ruptures die; those with white scrotums die; those with non-erect penises die; those without an anus die; those with no new flesh on the buttocks die; those whose cries resemble crow calls die; those with pink-white skin color die; those with rough skin and flesh die; those who cry without sound die; those with tongues resembling pig liver die; those lacking facial color perish early; those with short, thick, purple umbilical cords perish early; those born entirely silver-white perish early.
Infants born with teeth perish early; this is ominous, suggesting harm to parents, or otherwise self-harm. Infants who urinate before being wrapped will bring death to parents, squander family property, and suffer lifelong hardship while alive.
