The disease of Shanghan (Cold Damage) varies in its transmission and transformation. Within a fleeting moment, life and death are decided. Physicians specializing in this field often struggle with this aspect. I have observed the *Jin Jing Lu* (Golden Mirror Record) presented to me by Chen Yancai, a former Tingwei (Minister of Justice) from ancient Yushu. The Yuan dynasty scholar Ao established thirty-six tongue diagnosis diagrams. The methods are detailed and correspond to syndromes, while the syndromes are accompanied by prescriptions. The content is clear and concise, enabling physicians to examine the pulse by observing the tongue's form, progressing from the coarse to the refined, and administering acupuncture and herbal remedies precisely to critical areas (Gaohuang). It places the determination of life and death within the span of a breath. It is not difficult to master, yet it effectively responds to sudden changes. Even if patients lack access to skilled physicians in their locality, they will have a reference to rely on, making treatment easier. Cases that do not recover may be attributed to Heaven's will. Indeed, this is a shortcut for practitioners of Shanghan. Therefore, it has been printed to facilitate its widespread dissemination. A virtuous physician is like a virtuous chancellor. If transmitted correctly, the lives of the common people will not be endangered. Those who hold the power over life and death should take this as a warning! Take this as a warning!
