Tongue Diagram of Jueyin (Jueyin Tongue Chart)
The tongue appears red with black striations within. This is caused by Yin-Toxin pathogenic factors invading the Jueyin Meridian (Jueyin Channel). The Liver governs the sinews, thus the tongue manifests a thread-like shape. Treatment should employ Lizhong Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Atractylodes Decoction) combined with Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction).
[Jie's Commentary] Since it is stated that Yin-Toxin invades the Jueyin, the tongue coating should be greenish and slippery. According to traditional theories, because the Liver belongs to the Wind-Wood element, governs the sinews, and its color is green, this is the case. As for the tongue with pale purple and greenish meridians, which is pale purple with a hint of green and moist, accompanied by dark green-black meridians, this indicates Cold Pathogens directly striking the Yin Meridians. It must present with cold body temperature and cold extremities (Jue Ni), with a deep-slow or deep-taut pulse. One may use Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) and Lizhong Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Atractylodes Decoction) to warm the interior. If there is severe lower abdominal pain, Huoyang Jijiu Tang (Restore Yang and Rescue from Crisis Decoction) [composed of Fuzi, Shengjiang, Rougui, Renshen, Baizhu, Fuling, Banxia, Chenpi, Gancao, Wuweizi] is appropriate. One must further distinguish whether the tongue is dry or moist. If the tongue is not moist but dry and withered, it is a pattern of Excess Heat, and cold-natured medications should be used. This corresponds to the condition described by Liang Te Yan: "I believe that whenever the tongue color is purely red with visible black threads, it is certainly not a Cold pattern; rather, it is heat qi knotting in the Foot Shaoyin Meridian, suitable for cold medicines."
Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction)
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, one raw piece, sliced into eight pieces)
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, two shillings and half a candareen - approx. 6.25 qian)
Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, half liang - approx. 24 grams, processed)
Crush the above herbs. Take five qian per dose, add one zhong of water, decoct until reduced to six parts. Take warm at any time.
[Jie's Commentary] The formula is named Sini (Frigid Extremities) because it treats Shaoyin disease characterized by cold inside and out, leading to cold extremities. It utilizes the acrid-hot nature of Ginger and Aconite to assist Yang Qi to overcome Cold. Because Gancao combined with Ginger and Aconite can stimulate Kidney Yang and warm Middle Jiao Cold, it has the function of warming Earth within Water. When Ginger and Aconite are combined with Gancao, they can unblock joints and reach the four limbs, possessing the power to expel Yin and restore Yang. Thus, when Yang Qi reaches the exterior, the four limbs become warm.
Lizhong Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Atractylodes Decoction)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix)
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried)
Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed)
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried)
Administration method as above.
[Jie's Commentary] This is an essential formula for warming and tonifying Middle Qi (Middle Jiao Qi). Wang Jin San stated: Renshen and Gancao, being sweet, harmonize Yin; Baizhu and Ganjiang, being acrid, harmonize Yang. Acrid and Sweet assisting each other to reside in the center allows Yin and Yang to naturally harmonize and flow smoothly.
