Indications: Primarily treats severe injuries, tonifies the Middle Jiao, reconnects sinews and bones, fills marrow and brain, calms the Five Zang organs, treats "Wu Huan Liu Ji" (five slacknesses and six tensions), bi-syndrome due to wind-cold-dampness, cough, resolves blood stasis, masses, lower back pain, female hernia and masses, unblocks the Small Intestine, expels roundworms. Raw lacquer (Shengqi) expels long worms (parasites). Long-term use makes the body feel light and delays aging. Habitat: Rivers and valleys in Hanzhong. Harvest time: Collected after the Summer Solstice and dried. Pharmacokinetics/Interactions: Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia) acts as an assistant/guide; averse to egg yolk; currently also contraindicated with fatty oils. Quality: Lacquer from Liangzhou is best; Yizhou also produces it; Guangzhou lacquer is sharp-acting and dries easily. Natural dried lacquer found on the lids of lacquer buckets resembles honeycombs with distinct cells; this form is superior. Raw lacquer is highly toxic. People mix raw lacquer with egg white for oral administration to expel parasites. However, some cases involve irritation of the stomach and intestines. Individuals allergic to lacquer may even die from exposure. External application can cause skin sores and swelling; there are specific treatments for these reactions. Immortal prescriptions use crabs to dissolve lacquer into water for refining.
