The taste is sweet, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats various diseases.
This refers to the eel (Anguilla japonica), now commonly pronounced with the "ci" sound, which is the eel fish; consuming it is believed to have tonifying effects. There are also fish similar to eels but larger in size; there are also fish similar to eels that are yellow and delicious, benefiting the human body. However, eating such fish together with venison (Cervus nippon meat) or fish characterized by red eyes, red whiskers, and no gills can be fatal. There is also a "human fish" resembling an eel but possessing four limbs; its fat does not diminish when burned. This was used in the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang at Lishan and is referred to as "human fat." Such fish are most abundant in Jingzhou, Linju, and Qingxi.
[Note] The eel (Anguilla japonica), also known as Zhan fish or Li fish, primarily treats edema (water swelling) and promotes urination.
The taste is sweet, the nature is greatly warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily tonifies the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), nourishes blood, and treats deep ulcers on the lips (Shen chun). Taking the skull of an eel collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, burning it to ash, can stop dysentery.
Eels were said to transform from the roots of Nymphoides peltata (Xingqin), or alternatively from human hair. However, since they naturally carry eggs in their bellies, they are not entirely products of transformation. Their nature is hot; consuming them as food also has tonifying effects. However, during outbreaks of epidemic febrile diseases (Shi xing bing), consuming eels may cause relapse, and they tend to induce cholera-like disorders (Huo luan). Among aquatic animals such as fish and shrimp, many exist. Those famous ones have been noted in previous entries. Although all may be edible, they are highly damaging to the human body and thus are not included in medicinal materials. Furthermore, some foods can cause disease if consumed improperly. These are detailed below: Any fish with white beads-like markings extending from the head to the spine, any fish lacking a gallbladder in the abdomen, and any fish lacking gills in the head are all fatal to consume. Fish juice should not be eaten together with cormorant meat. Crucian carp (Carassius auratus) should not be eaten together with monkey meat or pheasant meat. Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) and eel should not be eaten together with white dog blood. Carp roe should not be eaten together with pig liver. Crucian carp follows the same rule. Black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) should not be eaten together with fresh Coriandrum sativum (cilantro), fresh Abelmoschus manihot (hibiscus leaves), or wheat sauce. Shrimp without whiskers, those with black undersides, and those that turn white after boiling are all inedible. Raw shrimp should not be eaten together with chicken meat, as this also harms the body. There is another type of fish that benefits the body, but its tail is toxic and can treat toothache. There is another fish that is particularly effective in resolving alcohol intoxication. Another fish is toxic and should not be eaten.
[Note] *Bie Lu* states: Dried eel heads primarily treat diabetes mellitus (Xiao ke), indigestion, expel cold qi, and eliminate痞 syndrome (Pi zheng - accumulation/masses). The string used for threading fish primarily treats bamboo or wood splinters stuck in the eye; the string used for threading salted fish also treats foreign bodies in the eye and removing spines; boiling it into a decoction for washing is highly effective.
