Treats chronic coldness of the Spleen Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi of the Spleen). Upper excess and lower deficiency (pathogenic factors are excessive in the upper body while healthy qi is deficient in the lower body). Phlegm-fluid retention in the chest. Or phlegm-fluid attacking upward to the head and eyes. Also for Ben Tun disease (a condition characterized by a sensation of gas rushing from the lower abdomen up to the chest and throat) causing upward rebellious Qi and panting. Swelling and distension of both legs. And the failure of Yin and Yang Qi to ascend properly.
[He Xi Dan (Black Lead Pill) to Suppress and Anchor Floating Yang] Formula: Cinnabar Tin (He Xi, lead-tin alloy) combined with Realgar (Liu Huang) into lumps. Added are: Tribulus Fruit (Hu Lu Ba), Psoralea Fruit (Po Gu Zhi/Bu Gu Zhi), Fennel Seed (Hui Xiang), Agarwood (Chen Xiang), Sandalwood (Mu Xiang), Cinnamon Twig (Rou Gui), Aconite Root (Fu Zi), Belladonna Fruit (Jin Ling Zi), and Myristica Seed (Rou Dou Kou) made into pills. (Preparation: Black Lead and Realgar, each 3 liang, are stir-fried together until they form a granular powder and grinding continues until no sound is produced. Tribulus Fruit, Agarwood, Prepared Aconite Root, and Cinnamon Twig, each 0.5 liang; Fennel Seed, Psoralea Fruit, Myristica Seed, Belladonna Fruit (pits removed), and Sandalwood, each 1 liang. Grind all into powder. Use wine to make a paste, mixed with malt glue to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Dry in the shade. Rub with a cloth bag to make them smooth and glossy. Take 40 pills per dose, washed down with Ginger Decoction.)
Chen Xiuyuan said: This formula consists entirely of acrid-warm herbs, mixed with the bitter-cold nature of Belladonna Fruit as a guide. Its subtlety is beyond words.
Yu Jiayan said: Whenever encountering urgent conditions such as counterflow of Yin Fire, sudden collapse of True Yang, panting, and rattling phlegm, there is no other method besides this pill. Even for various severe cases of smallpox/variolous diseases, taking it can bring the dying back to life. I usually carry a small pouch on my person, fearing that urgent symptoms may arise without time to prepare medicine. Moreover, I wish my body's primordial Qi could warm-nourish these medicines, allowing them to work effectively through my hands. Their merit is clearly recordable.
Xu Lingtai said: Suppressing and anchoring Primordial Qi is an essential medicine for treating panting. It should be prepared in advance during normal times, not something that can be hastily assembled when needed. Since one has prepared this pill, similar formulas like Lingsha Dan (Cinnabar Mercury Pill) and Yangzheng Dan (Nourishing Righteousness Pill) need not be prepared further.
[A Divine Formula for Nourishing Yin and Descending Fire]
This is Sheng Mai San (Pulse-Nourishing Powder) (see Cold Agents chapter), added with Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) 5-7 qian or 1 liang, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Bai Zhu) 3 qian, Achyranthes Bidentata Root (Niu Xi) and Aconite Root (Fu Zi) each 2 qian. Decoct in water and take orally.
Chen Xiuyuan said: This is a favored formula from Feng’s *Jin Nang* (Brocade Pouch), claiming efficacy for every symptom, stating it is miraculous. In reality, it is empty talk deceiving people; I do not believe it.
The formula uses Prepared Rehmannia Root to nourish the dryness of Kidney Water, Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong) and Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi) to moisten the dryness of Lung Metal, Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome to tonify the Qi of the Central Palace (Spleen/Stomach), so that fluids can be distributed upward to the Lungs and essence transported downward to the Kidneys. Aconite Root is warm to tonify Fire, and Achyranthes Bidentata Root guides Fire Qi downward, transforming destructive Fire into generating mild Fire. This follows the pattern of Gui Fu Di Huang Wan (Cinnamon and Aconite Rehmannia Pill) and shares the same intent as Zhang Jingyue’s Zhen Yin Jian (Settling Yin Decoction). However, it is eclectic and shallow, unsuitable for treating major illnesses. It is only suitable for adverse conditions in dermatology/pox treatment, because all the herbs are juicy substances, adding moisture most rapidly.
