[Song]
To the families of newborn infants: do not bathe them frequently to prevent water from entering the umbilicus. If affected by external pathogenic factors, critical conditions such as *cuokou* (mouth closing tightly) and *qifeng* (umbilical wind) may arise: *mutong* (wooden tongue) and *jinfeng* (lockjaw wind) are indeed terrifying; if contracted within ten days, they are difficult to treat. Manifestations include jaundice (*huang*), erythema (*chi*), accompanied by vomiting, indicating fetal heat (*tai re*), fetal cold (*tai han*), or fetal emaciation/obesity (*tai shou fei*). There is also fetal fright (*tai jing*) and internal cold causing refusal to suckle and nocturnal crying. All these result from toxins received during gestation, invading the body after birth. If urination and defecation are obstructed five days after birth, urgent methods must be employed to unblock them. If pregnant mothers observe prenatal education, how could infants suffer from these disorders?
[Dissertation]
Newborns are like sprouting grass or tender flower buds; their *qi* and blood are not yet full, and their skin and muscles are not yet solid. Even slight injury can cause significant harm, which is why ancients called them "sprout children." After cutting the umbilical cord, frequent bathing should be avoided. Not only does this invite wind-dampness into the umbilicus, but it also causes wind-cold common colds, which are severe. If water enters the tender umbilicus, *qifeng* (umbilical wind) may occur. Exposure to strangers or foreign objects can trigger *jingjin* (lockjaw), *kewu* (external shock), frightened crying, or *jue ni* (reversal cold). Overfeeding milk can lead to phlegm generation and qi rebellion. Excessive warmth consumes yin and generates internal heat, leading to erythema (*sheng chi*), jaundice (*sheng huang*), sores, carbuncles, erysipelas, red eyes, double tongue (*chong she*), and wooden tongue (*mutong*). Excessive cooling causes cold viscera, leading to nocturnal crying, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and intestinal colic (*panchang neidiao*). Therefore, regulation should aim for moderation.
Some diseases arise from fetal qi, such as *jinfeng* and *mutong feng*, caused by heat toxins in the womb flowing to the heart and spleen, manifesting in the throat and tongue. Post-birth exposure to wind exacerbates this, termed "offending wind lockjaw." *Cuokou qifeng* results from fetal qi carrying heat, combined with wind-heat entering the umbilicus and affecting the heart and spleen. If the mother consumes spicy and hot toxic foods, the child develops fetal heat. If she eats raw/cold foods, the child develops fetal cold. If the mother is damp, the child is born with golden-yellow hair, termed fetal jaundice (*tai huang*). If the mother has heat, the child's skin turns red like cinnabar, presenting as fetal obesity or emaciation. Fright during pregnancy leads to fetal fright, epilepsy, or convulsions in the first month. Indulgence in rich, sweet, alcoholic, or game meats by the mother causes the child to be either hyperactive (heat/stagnation) or timid (cold/diarrhea/deficiency/fright/constipation). Skilled treatment warms cold, cools heat, strengthens ying (nutritive qi) for deficiency, secures wei (defensive qi) for timidity, calms fright, gently purges stagnation, clears heat/toxins, stabilizes the spleen for diarrhea, expels wind, resolves dampness, and transforms phlegm.
Fetal Jaundice (*Tai Huang*)
The infant is yellow all over like gold, due to damp-heat in the womb. Symptoms include high fever, constipation, and urine resembling gardenia juice. The nursing mother should take *Shengdi Huang Tang* (Rehmannia Root Decoction) with *Yin Chen* (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), avoiding hot-toxic foods.
Shengdi Huang Tang (Rehmannia Root Decoction)
For the nursing mother, or the infant.

Decoct in water and take orally.
Fetal Erythema (*Tai Chi*)
The infant's body is red all over in the first month, like cinnabar, due to heat toxins in the womb. The mother takes *Qingliang Yinzi* (Cooling Drink), and externally apply *Lanye San* (Isatis Leaf Powder).
Qingliang Yinzi (Cooling Drink)
Treats interior heat and blood heat.
*Dang Gui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), *Chi Shao* (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), *Gan Cao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), *Da Huang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma).

Grind *Lanye* (Isatidis Folium), *Fuping* (Spirodela), and *Shuitai* (Hydrocharis) into a paste, extract juice, mix with *Puxiao* (Natrii Sulfas) and *Tuzhu* (Cinnabaris), and apply externally.
Vomiting (*Fa Ou*)
Vomiting immediately after birth is due to swallowing residual bloody mucus from wiping the mouth. Treat with *Mugua Wan* (Papaya Pill). Vomiting after crying while feeding is due to milk stagnation in the diaphragm blocking qi flow. Treat with *Xiaoru Wan* (Digest Milk Pill).
Mugua Wan (Papaya Pill)
*Mugua* (Chaenomelis Fructus) powder, *Muxiang* (Aucklandiae Radix) powder, *Binglang* (Arecae Semen) powder, *Shexiang* (Moschus) (each one gram).
Make pills with honey, size of millet seeds. Take three pills with licorice water.
Umbilical Wind, Cuokou, Lockjaw (*Qifeng Cuokou Koujin*)
Three acute conditions in newborns: lockjaw, cuokou, and umbilical wind. Lockjaw is the most severe. Within seven days, sudden lockjaw without sucking resembles cuokou but presents with a red face and loud crying without white foam, unlike cuokou which has a blue face, silent crying, and white foam. Grind *Tiannanxing* (Arisaematis Rhizoma) (peeled) into fine powder, add a little *Longnao* (Borneolum Syntheticum). Dip a finger in ginger juice, mix with powder, and rub on the gums to open the mouth immediately.
Umbilical wind involves high fever, profuse phlegm, eye rolling, and lockjaw. Treat with *Tianma Fangfeng Wan*.
Cuokou involves puckered lips that cannot open. Treat with *Xieshao San*.
Qian Kongchun stated: If eyebrows are blue, face red, and abdomen distended in umbilical wind/cuokou, medication is contraindicated. *Shenghui Fang* states: If cuokou precedes fright, with blue-black umbilicus and inability to open mouth, it is internal convulsion (untreatable); blue-black nails indicate death.
Tianma Fangfeng Wan (See Convulsions section).
Xieshao San (Scorpion Tail Powder)
Treats cuokou, umbilical wind, and fetal wind in infants under 100 days.
*Xieshao* (Scorpio tail, 49 pieces), *Jiangcan* (Bombyx Batryticatus, 49 pieces), *Pian Nao* (Borneolum Syntheticum, small amount, separately ground), *Shexiang* (Moschus, small amount, separately ground).
Wrap scorpion tails and silkworms in mint leaves, stir-fry until dry, grind finely, mix with borneol and musk. Administer with decoction of purple rooster liver.
Fetal Fright (*Tai Jing*)
Fetal fright manifests as kicking, convulsions, clenched fists, and fever from birth to the first month. Treat with *Baolong Wan* and *Zhisheng Baoming Dan*.
Note: These are true convulsions due to internal organ involvement, difficult to treat; death usually occurs within two or three episodes.
Baolong Wan (Embrace Dragon Pill)
Treats fright-wind, phlegm, wheezing, and cough; protects the liver to prevent excessive heart fire.
*Tianzhuhuang* (Calami Tiphysii), *Xionghuang* (Realgar), *Zhusha* (Cinnabaris) (each 5 qian), *Danning* (Arisaematis Cum Bile) (4 liang).
Grind to fine powder, make pills with honey (size of longan). Take one pill with mint tea.
