Prescription from Elder Zizhao of Fengqi.
Take one jin (approx. 500g) of high-quality powdered licorice root (Gancao, 甘草). Slowly roast it over a low fire until yellow, finely chop it, and grind it into a coarse powder. Soak it in five or six bowls of boiling water, stir with a bamboo rod to form a thick decoction. Add a few drops of raw oil, wipe the inside of the vessel while hot (to prevent sticking), then pour in the licorice juice. Boil for dozens of cycles. Add one jin of salt, using the heat of the liquid to dissolve it. Filter the mixture through gauze to remove salt residues, and continue simmering until it forms a paste, resembling the consistency of rice drink. Store in a dry bottle. When used, combine with other medicinal ingredients as needed. Generally, one jin of licorice can be processed into a paste divided into five portions; there is no need to strictly limit it to five sheng (approx. 2 liters).
Add one sheng (approx. 400ml) of fine sandalwood powder and three qian (approx. 11-12g) of chest musk. Grind them finely. Add two or three drops of fresh ginger juice and grind together. When administering, dissolve a small amount in warm water and drink.
Add three qian of fine clove powder. Follow the previous method for the rest.
Add two to three qian of cinnabar powder, adjusting the amount based on color. Use borneol and musk according to the previous method.
Add one liang (approx. 37.5g) of fine pepper powder. Use borneol and musk according to the previous method.
Add two and a half liang of fine Amomum villosum (Sha Ren, 砂仁) powder. Add a small amount of fine cloves and dried ginger powder. Do not use borneol or musk.
Add one liang of finely roasted fennel powder. Add a small amount of sandalwood and white ginger powder. Do not use borneol or musk. Adjust the quantities above according to taste preferences.
I have inherited my family's medical profession and have had the honor to stand among the ranks of learned instructors. This is great glory. I wish to repay even a fraction of the state's profound grace, but my talent is weak and strength insufficient to fully achieve this. Therefore, I organized the manuscript and submitted it for printing. If anyone uses this book to cure diseases and restore health, achieving results like turning back heaven itself, then my ambition will be fully satisfied. The details of the compilation are recorded in the postscript written by Chida Kyoshi, Imperial Physician of the Eastern Capital, on the day before Duanwu Festival in the fifth month of the year Tsuchi-no-Mi-tatsu (Xinyou Year), Kwansei 11.
