To treat wind-induced toothache and gingival swelling, regardless of whether the condition is recent or chronic, one dose brings immediate relief.
Galangal Rhizome (one piece, approximately two cun long) Scorpion (one individual, dried on a tile over fire)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Apply the powder to the affected teeth with a finger, similar to using toothpaste. Rub until the area feels thoroughly warm. After a short while, expectorate a small amount of saliva, then rinse the mouth with salt water for excellent results. This prescription also treats swelling and pain in the cheeks and jaw.
Aconitum Lateralis Radix Preparata Tip (used raw)
Grind the above ingredient into fine powder and apply directly to the painful area. After application, rinse the mouth with a decoction made from Bamboo Leaf (Zhuye), Asarum Root (Xixin), or Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie).
To treat toothache. Secret recipe from the residence of Chancellor Qian.
Alumen (calcined until dry) Olibanum (equal parts)
Grind the above two ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Melt beeswax and mix with the powder according to the required amount to form a paste, then shape into pills. Fill the cavity based on its size; the pain will stop immediately, showing miraculous efficacy. Another variation adds a small amount of rouge, mixing it to a deep peach-red color, used only as a powder. When toothache occurs, apply a "yi zi" (approx. 0.5-1g) quantity wrapped in paper to rub the affected area, and after some time, rinse with warm salt water.
Apply a small amount to the affected area each time to induce salivation and expectoration. Even if swallowed, it does no harm and is very effective.
Halitum (Qingyan, four liang) Aconitum Carmichaelii Radix (Chuan Wutou, two liang, remove tips, crush into dice-sized pieces)
Place the above ingredients in a crucible. Heat over well-burnt charcoal until all smoke has dissipated, preserving the medicinal properties. Remove and bury in the ground for three days. Grind into fine powder and apply to the affected area by rubbing. During heating, cover the crucible mouth with a wooden lid or use a porcelain jar instead. Rinse the mouth with Jingjie decoction before applying the medicine each time.
When I served in the Huaixi Military Government, in the winter of the Jiyi year, I was ordered to Hezhou. Upon reaching Hanshan County, my toothache became severe. Suddenly, I recalled using a small amount of [implied herb context: likely referring to the previous herbs or a specific local remedy not fully named here but implied by context of "knife/tweezers"], soaked in hot water for a moment, at a comfortable temperature. Dipping a finger in water to moisten the painful area stopped the pain immediately, and it did not recur the next day. Upon returning home, I transmitted this formula, and later it proved effective for many people.
Zhoumian Dizhongzi, which is recorded in the *Bencao* (Materia Medica), also known as Disong (Ground Pine), harvested after frost. Use a small amount soaked in hot water each time. Some say this is Heshi (Narthecium/Ascaris herb), but the *Bencao* lists a different Heshi, so there are slight differences. Shen Cunzhong's *Bitan* specifically discusses Disong, stating its seed is named Heshi. The item I used is indeed this plant. Qian Jicheng’s formula uses one Heshi, broken and placed in the tooth. Supervisor Gao stated that rinsing the mouth with Heshi decocted in rice vinegar stops pain immediately, which is especially effective!
