The treatise on moxibustion and acupuncture states: The methods for treating cough in the *Neijing* (Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor) are as follows: For diseases of the Zang organs, treat their Jing-well points; for diseases of the Fu organs, treat their He-sea points; for conditions with edema, treat their Jing-river points. Examining by acupoints, each has a fixed location. For all cases of cough accompanied by panting, loud voice, and even hemoptysis, Taiyuan (LU-9) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Jingqu (LU-8). For cough with pain under both hypochondria and inability to turn the body, Taichong (LR-3) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Zhongfeng (LR-4). For cough with pain under the right hypochondrium, faintly radiating to shoulder and back pain, severe enough to prevent movement, Taibai (SP-3) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Shangqiu (SP-5). For cough with severe mutual pulling pain between waist and back, and expectoration of saliva, Taixi (KI-3) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Fuliou (KI-7). For cough with heart pain, a sensation of obstruction in the throat like a fishbone, and severe swelling of the throat or throat bi syndrome, Shenmen (HT-7) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Lingdao (HT-4). For cough with blood loss (hemorrhage), Quchi (LI-11) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Yangxi (LI-5). For cough with flatus, Xiaohai (SI-8) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Yanggu (SI-5). For cough with urinary incontinence, Weizhong (BL-40) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Kunlun (BL-60). For cough with severe vomiting, even expelling roundworms, Zusanli (ST-36) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Jiexi (ST-41). For cough with vomiting of bitter fluid, Yanglingquan (GB-34) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Yangfu (GB-38). For chronic cough that does not cease, accompanied by abdominal fullness, Tianjing (TE-10) is the primary point. If accompanied by edema, treat at Zhigou (TE-6). These are the common methods for treating coughs of the five Zang and six Fu organs. Besides the He-sea points, there are other residual methods, attached below:
For treating chronic panting and cough, expectoration of pus and blood, and phlegm that does not resolve:
Take several layers of white paper, soak them in cold water until wet, then ignite the moxa cone. Dip it slightly in realgar powder while burning. Alternatively, placing the moxa cone on the center of the tongue is optimal. The practitioner holds the head of a copper spoon inside the patient's mouth to press down a small piece of flesh (to prevent injury), and then has the patient drink millet porridge.
For treating cough with frequent panting (from *Zisheng Jing*): Use Zusanli (ST-36).
For treating cough: Use Quepen (ST-12), Danzhong (CV-17), Juque (CV-14).
For treating cough and panting, also treating Lung Heart Pain, where cough pulls to the anus causing urinary incontinence: Use Yuji (LU-10).
For treating Lung cough: Use Feishu (BL-13).
For treating cough: Use Shaoze (SI-1), Xinshu (BL-15), Kufang (ST-14).
For treating cough with rebellious Qi, choking sensation, and sound like a water frog in the chest and throat: Use Tiantu (CV-22).
For treating cough with shortness of Qi: Use Lianquan (CV-23).
For treating cough with rebellious Qi and shortness of breath: Use Danzhong (CV-17).
For treating cough with rebellious Qi: Use Jingqu (LU-8).
For treating rebellious Qi and cough, chest fullness, throat wheezing, inability to move limbs, and axillary swelling: Use Tianchi (PC-1).
For treating rebellious Qi and cough, panting, abdominal borborygmi, and moving accumulated Qi up and down: Use Jiexi (ST-41).
For treating cough: Use Yuji (LU-10), Lieque (LU-7), Shaoze (SI-1), Quepen (ST-12).
For treating cough, panting, and thirst: Use Chize (LU-5).
For treating cough with rebellious Qi and hemoptysis: Use Jianzhongshu (BL-11).
For treating wind-labor Qi cough: Use Dazhu (BL-11).
For treating panting and restless sleep: Use Fengmen (BL-12).
For treating lung萎 (flaccidity) and cough: Use Feishu (BL-13).
For treating Lung Qi cough: Use Danzhong (CV-17).
For treating cough with epistaxis and neck pain: Use QianGu (SI-3).
For treating Pi masses cough, lack of appetite, and rebellious Qi cough: Use Feimu (BL-13, Back-Shu point of Lung), moxa 50 cones.
For treating cough: Find the painful spot when pressing the bone outside the transverse crease of the flexed arm, moxa 14 cones for good effect. Also moxa the boundary between black and white skin below both nipples, 100 cones each, which will cure. Additionally, use a string to measure around the nipple circumference, wrap it around the body ensuring front and back alignment, and moxa the point corresponding to the middle of the spinal vertebrae, 10 cones.
For treating cough: Use Lianquan (CV-23), Tianjing (TE-10), Taiyuan (LU-9).
Wang Shi said: Chronic cough is best treated by moxa Gao Huang (BL-43), followed by Feishu (BL-13) and other points, treating according to the syndrome. For acute cough, moxibustion is not necessary.
A man suddenly had continuous exhalation sounds, ill for several days. Pressing his Danzhong (CV-17) point yielded a response. Puncturing frequently with a slightly cold needle cured him. Initially no moxibustion was used, how miraculous!
For treating twelve types of wind entering the Lung causing cough, rebellious Qi, and shortness of breath: Liver cough puncture Zu Taichong (LR-3); Heart cough puncture Shenmen (HT-7); Spleen cough puncture Taibai (SP-3); Lung cough puncture Taiyuan (LU-9).
For treating panting and cough (from Wei Shi Fang): Use Feishu (BL-13), moxa 11 cones per point; use Tiantu (CV-22), moxa 7 cones, immediate effect.
For treating cough: Moxa one point opposite the nipple on the chest for "Sui Nian Zhuang" (cones equal to age). Also measure horizontally across the midpoint of the breasts, fold the string from the spine, and moxa the two ends of the string, 80 cones each. Do this in three sessions, completed over three days.
For treating cough: Use Xinshu (BL-15), moxa 5 cones, cone size half that of a jujube pit.
