There are several aspects to the contraindications for acupuncture and moxibustion. The Classics state: "For those who abhor needles and stones, one should not speak of supreme skill." Those with deficient and weak Qi and Blood (Qi Xue) should not be needled; those with chronic diseases in a critical condition should not be needled. In cases of extreme cold, extreme heat, strong wind, heavy rain, severe hunger, overeating, intoxication, or excessive labor, needling is prohibited. However, in cases of extreme cold, one should not needle immediately. Instead, allow the patient to reside in a warm room free from drafts, consume porridge and food, and drink fermented milk beverages, so that the patient no longer fears the cold. Wait until the Qi and Blood are harmonious and balanced before proceeding with needling. By doing so, no disease will remain uncured. All other situations should follow this principle. The Classics state: "Do not needle when sweat is dripping profusely; do not needle when the pulse is chaotic and turbid; do not needle when there is intense heat." This refers to such circumstances.
The first month corresponds to Mao days; the second month to Yin days; the third month to Chou days; the fourth month to Zi days; the fifth month to Hai days; the sixth month to Xu days; the seventh month to You days; the eighth month to Shen days; the ninth month to Wei days; the tenth month to Wu days; the eleventh month to Si days; the twelfth month to Chen days.
Ding-Mao, Geng-Wu, Jia-Xu, Bing-Zi, Ren-Wu, Jia-Shen, Ding-Hai, Xin-Mao, Ren-Chen, Bing-Shen, Wu-Xu, Ji-Hai, Ji-Wei, Geng-Zi, Xin-Chou, Jia-Chen, Yi-Si, Bing-Wu, Wu-Shen, Ren-Zi, Gui-Chou, Yi-Mao, Bing-Chen, Ren-Xu, Bing-Xu. All the above are auspicious days. It is also suitable to use Chu days (Exclusion days), Kai days (Opening days), and Tianyi Ya'an days, all of which are auspicious.
On Jia days, do not treat the head; on Yi days, do not treat the throat; on Bing days, do not treat the shoulder; on Ding days, do not treat the Heart; on Wu days, do not treat the abdomen; on Ji days, do not treat the Spleen; on Geng days, do not treat the waist; on Xin days, do not treat the knees; on Ren days, do not treat the shins; on Gui days, do not treat the feet.
Jia days correspond to the head; Yi days to the ears; Bing days to the shoulders; Ding days to the back; Wu and Ji days to the abdomen and Spleen; Geng days to the Lungs and waist; Xin days to the knees; Ren days to the Kidney Meridian; Gui days to the hands and feet.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: Conditions such as carbuncles, sores, ding sores, sore throat, and sudden fright are particularly urgent. When preparing decoctions, one must not avoid inauspicious days; if illness arises and death seems imminent within moments, treatment must begin immediately. It further states: For any sudden onset of wind pathogen, seasonal qi invasion, or various ailments, emergency treatment is required; otherwise, subsequent cure will be difficult. This argument is highly appropriate. In times of urgency, life hangs by a thread; if one waits for an auspicious day to treat, the patient would have already perished. This is why one should not rigidly adhere to taboos. Only when treating potential illnesses before they manifest, or on days like Tiande and Yuede, is it appropriate to administer medication, acupuncture, or moxibustion. Physicians who fail to understand these various contraindications and fail to seek auspiciousness and avoid misfortune, resorting to reckless acupuncture and moxibustion, will not only fail to cure the disease but may even cause injury or death to the patient, resulting in grave harm. If encountering a patient whose age destiny coincides with a period of tribulation, or if the patient's Qi is weak and timid, treatment is extremely difficult to initiate. A wise and enlightened person, facing sudden acute emergencies, has no time to select auspicious dates or avoid taboos; thus, rigidity is not applicable here. Regarding forbidden acupoints, if various medical treatments fail to improve the condition, the *Mingtang Jing* permits moxibustion from one to ten moxa cones. One should deliberate carefully based on judgment.
