Wang Shi said: Backache is caused by overexertion. People engaged in skilled labor, as well as scholars and women working diligently on needlework, often suffer from this condition (scholars studying writing and women practicing embroidery both develop backache through intense effort). Those suffering from "color fatigue" (chronic depletion manifesting in complexion) also suffer from it. Duke Jing of Jin is an example. The Gao Huang (BL43) acupoint is crucial. I once found a slight tenderness about four and a half cun lateral to the spinous process beside the Gao Huang point; pressing it exacerbated the pain. I casually applied three moxa cones, and the pain ceased. Later, the pain recurred in the shoulder, and treating that area with moxibustion cured it. Only then did I realize the reliability of the "Ashi points" described in the *Qianjin Fang* (I used to experience spontaneous cold sweats for years whenever I encountered heat syndromes requiring moxibustion on Gao Huang; it was cured by this method).
To treat acute pain in the shoulder and arm with inability to raise the hand above the head. Moxa Jian Wai Tou (an extra point near the posterior aspect of the shoulder where a depression is felt upon pressure). Apply seven moxa cones for immediate relief (This is a disease of laborers; refer to the "Wind" section for further details).
