[Diagram of the Dinghai Year's Qi and Yun]
Jueyin Wind-Wood governs the Heaven (Si Tian), Shaoyang Minister-Fire governs the Earth (Zai Quan). The Central Movement is Shaojiao Wood Movement. The year's Wood Qi is insufficient, causing the Qi transformation to operate later than the celestial timing. Its meteorological manifestation is identical to that of normal Wood movement.
Its completion number is eight. Its objects are solid in the center. Corresponding to the human body, its zang organ is the Liver. Its orifice is the eye. It nourishes the sinews. Its pathological manifestations include abdominal tension and limb distension. This is the transformation pattern of the annual movement.
The transformation of the annual Qi: Above, Jueyin Wind-Wood is seen; the left interstitial Qi is Shaoyin Sovereign-Fire, and the right interstitial Qi is Taiyang Cold-Water. Thus, the heavenly Qi is disturbed and its administration is chaotic. Below, Shaoyang Minister-Fire is seen; the left interstitial Qi is Yangming Dryness-Metal, and the right interstitial Qi is Taiyin Dampness-Earth. Thus, the earthly Qi is upright and its commands are swift. Wind is generated in high places, and intense heat follows it.
Clouds tend toward the Rain Mansion, and the transformation of dampness begins to operate. Wind and Fire share the same virtue, corresponding above to Sui Xing (Jupiter) and Ying Huo (Mars). The corresponding grains are those of green (Cang) and red (Dan) colors, and those associated with the Jue note (Wood category) and Yu note (Water category). The transformations of cooling (Qing) and heating (Re) undergo sheng-fu (excess and counteraction) changes identically; this is the degree of pathogenic Qi transformation. The number for Wind transformation is three, and for Fire transformation is seven. These are the suitable characteristics of substances for the year. Shell-bearing insects (Jie Chong) suffer, and cold toxins do not easily arise; these are all restricted by earthly Qi. Therefore, Wind, Dryness, and Fire-Heat prevail.
Water does not freeze. Heat diseases circulate in the lower part, Wind diseases circulate in the upper part, and the sheng-fu of Wind and Dryness circulates in the middle.
In this year, Yin governs Heavenly Qi, and Yang governs Earthly Qi. Heavenly Qi is weak, consistent with the Wood movement. Furthermore, Wood and Fire share the same virtue, making their Qi unified, not relying on the source of transformation, but only assisting the Wood movement. Pungent (Xin) flavors harmonize.
Before the midpoint of the year, Heavenly Qi presides. Heaven disseminates the administration of Jueyin Wind-Wood; its command is Wind.
After the midpoint of the year, Earthly Qi presides. Earth executes the command of Shaoyang Minister-Fire; its transformation is Fire. This is the constant pattern of Qi transformation.
First Qi Period: From the beginning of Hai hour on the Day of Great Cold in the Bingxu year to the beginning of You hour on the Day of Spring Equinox in this year, totaling sixty days and eighty-seven-and-a-half ke. The Main Position is Shaojiao Wood. The Guest Qi is Jueyin Wind-Wood, with a central Wood movement; the movement matches the Heavenly Qi (Yun Yu Tian Fu). Heavenly administration spreads, and wind rises at its proper time. For the Guest Qi of Jueyin Wind-Wood, tonify with Bitter (Ku) and drain with Salty (Xian). For the Guest Qi of Shaoyin Sovereign-Fire, tonify with Pungent (Xin), drain with Sour (Suan), and relax with Sweet (Gan). Annual grains should be green; intermediate grains should be beans. Avoid warmth when distant from warm commands; do not violate the warmth of the Si Qi.
Fourth Qi Period: From the exact Wu hour on the Day of Great Heat to the beginning of Si hour on the Day of Autumn Equinox. The Main Position is Taishang Metal. The Guest Qi is Shaoyin Sovereign-Fire, with a central Wood movement. Humid heat and dampness contend on the left upper side. The people are prone to illness. For the Guest Qi of Shaoyin Sovereign-Fire, tonify with Salty (Xian), drain with Sweet (Gan), and astringe with Sour (Suan). Annual grains should be red; intermediate grains should be beans.
Fifth Qi Period: From the beginning of Si hour on the Day of Autumn Equinox to the beginning of Mao hour on the Day of Minor Snow, totaling more than sixty days. The Main Position is Taishang Metal. The Guest Qi is Taiyin Dampness-Earth, with a central Metal movement. Deep Yin Qi spreads, and Cold Qi implements transformation. For the Guest Qi of Taiyin Dampness-Earth, tonify with Sweet (Gan) and drain with Bitter (Ku). Annual grains should be red; intermediate grains should be hemp seeds. In this way, dampness will not become pathogenic.
Final Qi Period: From the exact Mao hour on the Day of Minor Snow to the exact Chou hour on the Day of Great Cold. The Main Position is Shaoyu Water. The Guest Qi is Shaoyang Minister-Fire, with a central Wood movement. Wood generates Fire; fearing the command of Fire, Yang Qi erupts greatly. Grasses grow, and people feel comfortable. However, warm epidemics may occur. One should regulate the Guest Qi of Shaoyang Minister-Fire, tonifying with Salty (Xian) and draining with Bitter (Ku). Annual grains should be red; intermediate grains should be beans. In this way, fire will not become pathogenic. This is the transformation of the Six Qi. The year is a Level Wood year. If pathogenic factors cause disease, as stated in the Classic: "Those who intercept the Law Enforcement (Si Tian/Zai Quan) have diseases that are rapid and dangerous."
