When Shao Yin Jun Huo (Ministerial Fire) governs the Si Tian (Heavenly Qi), Yang Ming Zao Jin (Dryness Metal) governs the Zai Quan (Earthly Qi), and the central Yun (Movement) is Tai Yu Shui (Great Water). The year's water is excessive, and its qi transformation operates ahead of time. Heat transforms above, and softness descends below.
In this year, Fire constitutes the Heavenly Qi, and Metal constitutes the Earthly Qi. Fire overcomes Metal; the Heavenly Qi is full, while the Earthly Qi is deficient. One should draw upon the source of Fire's transformation. With Water Yun in the middle, the pathogenic influence of Fire becomes slight.
Before the midpoint of the year, Shao Yin governs. Its administration is hot. If heat is excessively prevalent, stifling heat arrives, and Fire exercises its administration. The people suffer from vexation and heat in the chest, dry throat, and shoulder discomfort. The treatment should employ salty and hot substances.
After the midpoint of the year, Yang Ming governs. Its command is dryness. If dryness invades internally, mist becomes clear and dim. The people suffer from frequent vomiting with bitter fluids, frequent sighing, and aversion to wind. The treatment should employ salty and hot substances.
The First Qi period begins at Shen Chu on the Day of Great Cold in the Yi Si year and ends at Wu Chu on the Day of Spring Equinox in this year, lasting sixty days and eighty-seven-and-a-half ke. The Main Position is Tai Jiao Wood, and the Guest Qi is Wind. When Wind Qi is dominant, use sweet substances to relax it. The annual grain should be red (Dan), and the intercalary grain should be rice. Even if there is a Wind pathogen, it cannot cause harm.
The Third Qi period begins at Si Chu on the Day of Grain Full and ends at Mao Chu on the Day of Great Heat, lasting sixty-plus days. The Main Position is Shao Zheng Fire, and the Guest Qi is Shao Yin Fire, with Water Yun in between. Two Fires combine, and Water Yun supports them. The Heavenly Administration spreads, Great Fire prevails, and all things flourish and are bright. Cold Qi occasionally arrives. The people suffer from Qi reversal, heart pain, alternating cold and heat, cough and asthma, and red eyes. It is appropriate to treat the Shao Yin Guest Qi by supplementing with salty substances, purging with sweet substances, and astringing with sour substances. The annual grain should be red, and the intercalary grain should be beans. Even if there is a Heat pathogen, it cannot cause harm.
The Fourth Qi period begins at Mao Zheng on the Day of Great Heat and ends at Chou Zheng on the Day of Autumn Equinox, lasting sixty-plus days. The Main Position is Tai Gong Earth, and the Guest Qi is Tai Yin Earth, with Water Yun in between. Earth occupies its position and can overcome Water. Humid heat arrives, and heavy rain occurs frequently. Cold and heat alternate. The people suffer from cold and heat, dry throat, jaundice, nasal congestion or epistaxis, and fluid retention with cough. It is appropriate to regulate the Tai Yin Guest Qi by supplementing with sweet substances, purging with bitter substances, and relaxing with sweet substances. The annual grain should be white, and the intercalary grain should be sesame. Even if there is a Dampness pathogen, it cannot cause harm.
The Fifth Qi period begins at Yin Chu on the Day of Autumn Equinox and ends at Zi Chu on the Day of Minor Snow, lasting sixty-plus days. The Main Position is Shao Shang Metal, and the Guest Qi is Shao Yang Fire, with Water Yun in between. Fire overcomes Metal, and Water Yun supports it. The Feared Fire (Shao Yang) takes precedence, and summer heat returns. Yang Qi transforms, and all things grow and flourish. The people are healthy. If disease occurs, it is Warm Disease. It is appropriate to treat the Shao Yang Guest Qi by supplementing with salty substances and purging with sweet substances. [Note: Original text has a gap "Yi Xian ___ zhi", translated as per structure]. The annual grain should be white, and the intercalary grain should be beans. Even if there is a Fire pathogen, it cannot cause harm.
The Final Qi period begins at Zi Zheng on the Day of Minor Snow and ends at Xu Zheng on the Day of Great Cold, lasting sixty-plus days. The Main Position is Tai Yu Water, and the Guest Qi is Yang Ming Metal, with Water Yun in between. Water and Metal are in their proper positions, and the Dryness command executes. Residual Fire is blocked internally, causing swelling above, cough, and asthma; severely, it causes hemorrhage. Cold Qi rises frequently, causing misty obscuration. Disease arises in the skin and cou li, resides internally in the hypochondrium, connects downward to the lower abdomen, and severely leads to internal cold. The Earthly Qi is about to change. It is appropriate to regulate the Yang Ming Guest Qi by supplementing with sour substances, purging with pungent substances, and draining with bitter substances. The annual grain should be white, and the intercalary grain should be broomcorn millet. Even if there is a Dryness pathogen, it cannot cause harm.
This is the transformation of the Six Qi. At the transition of yearly Qi, if Heavenly Qi prevails, there is a Rebound of Tai Yang; if Earthly Qi prevails, there is a Rebound of Shao Yang. Treatment follows each according to the method of Prevailing and Rebounding. Cold is treated with Heat; Heat is treated with Cold. Do not assist the prevailing Qi, nor aid the rebounding Qi. This is the Dao.
