Typhoid fever (Shanghan) pathogenic toxins fail to dissipate. Heat rises to the Upper Jiao, damaging the Lung. The Lung governs Qi; when pathogenic heat stagnates and obstructs, the lung lobes become vacuously distended, and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) fails to circulate freely. Consequently, this leads to Shang Qi (rebellious Qi manifesting as asthma or shortness of breath). In cases of Shang Qi due to typhoid fever, since the Lung governs Qi and its meridian is the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, if a patient has pre-existing disharmony in Lung Qi and encounters cold-heat pathogenic factors invading this meridian, the Lung becomes distended and Qi rebels upward without descending, thus causing Shang Qi.
