When "Gu Zei" (referring to impaction of foreign bodies such as grain awns or thorns) occurs in the throat, it manifests as nodular swelling and pain in the pharynx, obstructing food and fluid intake, accompanied by chest stuffiness. This is caused by accidentally ingesting short spikes from cereal plants; their sharp edges lodge tightly in the throat, feeling like a fishbone stuck, unable to move up or down. If complicated by wind-heat pathogens, the nodular swelling will not subside. If not treated urgently, it may also be fatal.
Formulas:
Yaxiang San (Tusk Powder): Treats Gu Zei in the throat, with symptoms resembling a stuck fishbone that cannot move up or down, accompanied by pain and chest stuffiness.
Elephant Tusk (ground into powder, 1 fen) Licorice Root (large pieces, 1 cun long) Talcum (0.5 fen) Mung Bean Starch (2 liang) Curcuma Aromatica (small piece) Frankincense (ground)
Wuweizi Tang (Schisandra Decoction): Treats Gu Zei in the throat, characterized by nodular swelling, pain, and obstruction of food intake.
Schisandra Fruit (stir-fried, 1.5 liang) Dried Ginger (processed) Ophiopogon Tuber (heart removed, baked) Cinnamon Twig (bark removed, each 1 liang) Mulberry Root Bark (cut and stir-fried, 3 liang)
Take at any time.
Shexian Tang (Belamcanda Decoction): Treats Gu Zei in the throat, causing chest stuffiness when swallowing.
Belamcanda Rhizome Cimicifuga Rhizome (each 3 liang) Platycodon Root (cut and stir-fried, 1 liang) Scrophularia Root Akebia Stem (cut, each 3 qian) Licorice Root (honey-fried and cut, 0.5 liang)
Coarsely crush the above herbs.
Formula for Treating Pharyngeal Swelling and Pain due to Gu Zei (from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*):
Chongtai (0.5 liang, preferably red-colored) Biophytum Semen (0.5 liang) Rheum Palmatum Rhizome (0.5 liang, cut and lightly stir-fried) Halitum (0.5 liang) Pinellia Tuber (1 fen)
Ruxiang Wan (Frankincense Pill) (from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*): Treats Gu Zei in the throat. If not treated urgently, it can be fatal.
Frankincense (0.5 fen) Realgar (1 fen) Amber Pine Resin (each 0.5 liang)
Grind each herb into fine powder, mix evenly again, melt white beeswax, and form pills the size of chicken heads.
Fuling San (Poria Powder): Treats Gu Zei in the throat, characterized by nodular swelling, pain, and dietary obstruction with chest stuffiness.
Red Poria Polyporus Root Amomum Fruit Licorice Root (honey-fried, equal parts)
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Dryly apply 1 qian into the throat, then swallow with water.
Formula for Treating Gu Zei (from *Zhizhi Fang*):
Borax Sodium Nitrate (equal parts)
Grind finely. Take 0.5 qian per dose, wrap in thin silk, and hold in mouth to swallow saliva.
Maren San (Hemp Seed Powder) (from *San Yin Fang*): Treats Gu Zei. Sensation of itching in the throat due to "corpse qi" blockage, caused by accidentally swallowing grain awns that prick and irritate the throat, leading to itching and pain.
Use Sesame seeds, stir-fry them, grind into powder regardless of quantity, and take with hot water. Note: Gu Zei affecting the pharynx and Ma Hou Feng (Horse Throat Wind) affecting the larynx must be distinguished.
Method for Treating Gu Zei Impacting the Throat and Cheeks, Sudden Sublingual Swelling, Painful Chest Stuffiness upon Swallowing, and Unilateral Throat Pain:
Grind Alum into fine powder. Apply a small amount to the swollen area until healed. Spit out if salivation occurs. Alternatively, wrap in silk and hold in mouth to swallow saliva. For unilateral pain, treat while lying on the side.
Another Formula (from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*):
Puncture the site with a needle to allow dark blood to flow out. Then hold a small piece of Halitum in the mouth and swallow saliva to heal. Another method: wrap half a qian-bi size in silk and hold in mouth.
Shengma Tang (Cimicifuga Decoction), also known as Huangbai Tang (Phellodendron Decoction): Treats Gu Zei in the throat, causing chest stuffiness when swallowing.
Gu Zei Formula (from *Zhizhi Fang*):
