The throat and pharynx are generated by the Qi of the Lung and Stomach. The pharynx (Yan, 咽) is for swallowing, indicating its function to swallow food; it is also called "Ai" (嗌). Its primary role is to facilitate the smooth passage of water, food, and Stomach Qi.
Therefore, when unobstructed, one can eat and drink as usual. Diseases of the throat and pharynx arise urgently and should not be treated recklessly with acupuncture or herbs.
Huixian Jiuku Dan (Immortal's Salvation and Suffering-Relief Pill, from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*) treats obstruction of the throat and pharynx preventing swallowing, and also treats fish bones stuck in the throat.
