Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Huang La (Beeswax) (2 liang), Huang Dan (Lithargyrum) (2.5 liang). The first three ingredients are crushed into coarse powder.
In spring and autumn, use 4.5 liang of genuine sesame oil; in summer, 4 liang; in winter, 5 liang. Boil the herbs until they turn purple-red. Filter out the dregs using cotton cloth. Then add Beeswax and Lithargyrum. Stir constantly with a willow branch until drops form beads when tested in water, then stop heating. Apply as usual.
Zijin Gao (Purple Gold Ointment): Treats all types of sores and swellings.
Zao Jia (Gleditsiae Fructus) (1 qian, uninfested, peeled), Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) (5 stems, roots removed), Qian Dan (Lead Monoxide) (powdered), Tuan Fen (Rice Starch) (powdered, each 4 liang), Song Zhi (Pini Resin) (powdered, 2 liang).
Take 0.5 jin of refined oil. First decoct Zao Jia and Cong Bai until scorched yellow. Filter out the dregs using cotton cloth. Next add Lead Monoxide, then Rice Starch and Pini Resin. Stir constantly with a wooden spatula made of willow wood until drops do not disperse when tested in water. Spread and apply according to the size of the sore.
Han Shui Shi Gao (Cold Water Stone Paste): Treats Fa Bei (back carbuncle).
Han Shui Shi (Gypsum Aquaticum) (2 liang, powdered; referred to as "Shi Gao"; select clear crystals, bury underground under open sky on the night of the full moon for three nights, covered with thin soil to absorb moonlight, then take out without further grinding). Qing Ma You (Refined Sesame Oil) (4 liang), Huang La (Beeswax), Huang Dan (Lithargyrum) (each 1 liang), Feng Xiang (Frankincense from Liquidambar) (2 liang). First boil the oil with Beeswax and other two ingredients to form a thin paste. Lift the pot until there is no smoke, then add Han Shui Shi powder and mix quickly. Expose to the moonlight for three nights, store indoors during the day. If it is a yang syndrome turning mature back carbuncle, apply this immediately for effective results. Whether ulcerated or not, applying it feels cooling like ice.
Sheng Ji Zhang Rou Gao (Flesh-Regenerating Ointment): Treats all types of carbuncles, ulcers, and malignant sores.
Qing You (Refined Oil) (10 liang), Long Gu (Fossilized Bones) (powdered, 2 liang), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (deveined, each 3 fen, ground together into fine powder). Put the oil in a pot and boil slowly over low heat until drops form beads when tested in water. Add Long Gu powder. Continue boiling until it resembles a thin paste, then stop. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Add the three powdered herbs. Stir constantly. Cool down and store in a porcelain box. Spread and apply according to the size of the sore.
Xuanwu Gao (Black Tortoise Ointment): Treats carbuncles, Fa Bei, Ding Zhong (carbuncle on the tongue or extremities), internal and external malignant sores, and head abscesses. Applicable whether ulcerated or not. It effectively drains pus, disperses toxicity, relieves pain, and regenerates flesh, showing frequent miraculous effects. For Ding Zhong, first puncture the center and surrounding areas of the sore with a silver needle or deer horn needle to allow evil blood to drain. Apply a pill of Zhui Du Bing (Toxin-Trapping Pill, wheat-sized) into the hole, then cover with this ointment. If the sore is severely necrotic and difficult to cover with standard plasters, decoct 2-3 pieces of Zao Jia, mix with oil and this ointment to a thick paste, and apply thinly. If the toxin persists, reapply multiple times until dry healing occurs.
Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus) (2 liang, cleaned), Mu Bie Zi Ren (Strychni Semen) (2 liang), Huang Dan (Lithargyrum) (4 liang), Qing You (Refined Oil) (10 liang), Huai Liu Nen Zhi (Tender branches of Sophora and Willow) (7 twigs each, 3 cun long, chopped).
Soak Strychni Semen, Crotonis Fructus, and the branches in oil overnight in a porcelain or copper/iron pot. Decoct slowly over low heat until the herbs turn black. Filter through raw silk gauze. Re-boil the filtered oil slowly, then add Lithargyrum. Stir constantly with long willow branches. When slight smoke rises, test drops on water surface; if they coalesce into stable beads, the ointment is ready. Pour into a porcelain container for storage. Soak in fresh water for three days to remove fire toxicity before application.
Wu Gao (Black Ointment): Treats all sores, draws out pus, regenerates flesh, and kills parasites.
Wu Ma You (Black Sesame Oil) (1 sheng, raw and clear), Huang Dan (Lithargyrum) (3 liang, sieved), Song Zhi (Pini Resin) (0.5 liang, powdered), Xun Lu Xiang (Boswellia Carterii Gum) (1 liang, nipple-shaped best), La (Beeswax) (0.5 liang, powdered, refined, total volume equivalent to Da Sheng Liang). First boil the oil alone until reduced by one-third. Let cool. Add Lithargyrum and simmer gently over low heat until reduced by another third. Let cool again. Add Boswellia powder; if too hot, it may boil over. Boil until the fragrance dissipates completely. Add Pini Resin and Beeswax. Test consistency on an iron object; adjust until hardness is moderate. If the sore is heat-type, reduce Boswellia and Pini Resin. If the sore is chronic/cold-type, follow the original prescription. For cane-blow wounds, use 1 sheng oil, 0.5 he of Rehmanniae Radix juice, 2 large liang Lithargyrum, 1 small liang Beeswax, following the above method.
Ru Xiang Gao (Frankincense Ointment): Treats various sores, carbuncles, boils, and pediatric skin lesions.
Ru Xiang (Boswellia Carterii Gum) (1 liang), Ni Fen (Calomelas), Song Zhi (Pini Resin), Mi Tuo Seng (Litharge) (each 0.5 liang), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (0.5 he). Mix well. Use 4 liang of good oil and 2 liang of refined Beeswax. Decoct all herbs into an ointment. Add 1 qian of She Xiang (Musk). Cover and leave overnight. Apply according to sore size, changing once or twice daily.
Shen Xian Gao (Immortal Ointment): Treats sores caused by horse sweat/blood entering wounds. (Also known as Gao Yao Fang).
Qian Dan (Lead Monoxide) (3 liang, stir-fried to purple color), Qing Ma You (Refined Sesame Oil) (6 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (0.5 liang, chopped, wrapped in cotton), Xing Ren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen) (49 kernels, unpeeled, tips intact, crushed, wrapped in cotton), Tao Liu Zhi (Peach and Willow Branches) (21 stems each, preferably long and thick). Slowly boil the oil for about three shichen (6 hours). Add Pruni Armeniaci Semen and Angelicae Sinensis Radix. When almonds turn yellow-purple, strain them out. Add Peach and Willow branches and boil similarly, then strain. Filter through cotton. Re-boil and add Lead Monoxide. Stir counter-clockwise constantly with a wooden spatula until thick. Test a drop in water; if it sinks and does not disperse, the ointment is ready. Pour into porcelain, cool, soak in fresh water overnight, and store in the morning. Keep away from chickens, dogs, and women. Apply sparingly.
Ru Xiang Gao (Frankincense Ointment): Treats Fa Bei carbuncles with swelling and pain, and all sores/boils.
Huang La (Beeswax) (1.5 liang), Ding Fen (Minium/Red Lead), Ru Xiang (Boswellia Carterii Gum) (1 liang), Xiao You (Small Oil/Sesame Oil) (4 liang). Place oil and wax in a porcelain bowl and melt in a water bath. Once wax melts, add Frankincense and Minium. Stir with a willow branch to disperse foam. Cool in cold water to remove fire toxicity. Spread on silk paper according to sore size. Avoid iron vessels.
Bai Yu Gao (White Jade Ointment): Treats contracting carbuncles, preventing spread. Cold medicines are strictly prohibited.
Xing Ren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen) (21 kernels, peeled, tips removed, separately ground), Chuan Jiao (Sichuan Pepper) (49 grains, eyes removed, processed to release moisture, powdered), Qing You (Refined Oil) (1 jin). Boil together until purple-black. Filter through new cotton. Cut greaseproof paper into comb-like shapes according to sore size. Spread medicine on paper. Apply around the periphery of the redness/swelling. As the swelling recedes inward, cut smaller pieces and reapply closer to the center. Change frequently. Once the swelling has receded revealing the base or opening of the sore, switch to the next formula. For large malignant sores where toxins are abundant, do not apply directly on top, as this may suppress the dispersion of toxins and worsen the condition. This ointment effectively reduces swelling and reveals the sore base; its method is excellent.
