Qi dysentery (Qi Li) arises from deficiency in both the exterior and interior, with weak stomach and intestines. Accumulated cold qi lodges between the intestines, causing disharmony of the zang-fu organs. Due to this deficiency, diarrhea occurs, hence it is called Qi dysentery. Specifically, Qi dysentery results from cold qi stagnating in the stomach and intestines, leading to imbalance of cold and heat, and disharmony of the spleen and stomach. Symptoms include a sensation of fullness in the abdomen and hypochondrium, borborygmus (intestinal rumbling), abdominal pain, and passage of red and white purulent stool. The treatment principle should be to strengthen the stomach and intestines, regulate cold and heat, and tonify spleen qi, whereby the dysentery will heal spontaneously.
