Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome), although presenting with thirst, involves minimal urination. This arises from taking Wushi San (Five Minerals Powder) and similar pills in youth. Over years, the dry-heat pathogenic factor of the minerals accumulates in the Kidney, causing deficiency in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner). The pathological manifestation presents as a rapid and large pulse, indicating the overflow of Qi, associated with delicious food.

Thirst caused by the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel: if the pulse is floating and there is no sweating, using Wuling San (Poria Pill) or Shi Gao (Gypsum) type medications often proves ineffective. Consequently, the patient drinks excessively, leading to edema in both feet. This syndrome should not be treated by... [text missing]. Hu... Xiao Zhong (Middle Consuming) Wan (Pill). [Text missing]. The Foot-Taiyang channel is the Bladder meridian. The Bladder is the Fu organ of the Kidney. If urination is frequent, it is because excessive Qi leads to rapid digestion of food and hard, dry stools. Pus and water... become... hundred days... if... causes... external... Urine volume exceeds intake, causing extreme weakness and shortness of breath. "Internal Consuming" refers to food being completely digested into urine. Moreover, there is no sensation of thirst. In the 10th year of Zhenguan, Cishi Li Wenbo first took Bai Yingshi (White Quartz). After a long time, his sexual potency suddenly increased. Over a month, he gradually developed thirst. After several days, his urination became very profuse, occurring a hundred times day and night. Various treatments were applied, but the condition worsened. His four limbs became emaciated, unable to rise or move. His spirit was confused, mouth and tongue scorched and dry, until death. Although rare, this disease exists. When urinating, the pulse is deep, fine, and weak; taking Gouqi Tang (Goji Decoction) shows effect, but does not cure permanently. Taking Qiandan San (Lead Tetroxide Powder) also reduces symptoms. During this period, heat-clearing and thirst-quenching medicines were taken. For those with a long pulse and sweating, Baitu Liangge San (White Tiger Cooling Fragrance Grid Powder) type may be used. Thirst caused by the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel: if the pulse is wiry and accompanied by vomiting, Xiaochaihu Tang plus Gualou (Trichosanthes Root) Decoction is used. Thirst caused by the Taiyin (Greater Yin) channel: if desiring water and hot soup but not cold water, Sizijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) or Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) are primary treatments. Thirst caused by the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) channel: if the pulse is deep with spontaneous diarrhea, Zhuling Tang (Poria Decoction) or Sanhuang Tang (Three Yellow Decoction) are used. For a faint pulse with desire to drink, give small amounts of water. Shi Gao (Gypsum) treats thirst originally due to obstruction of orifices/channels; however, its dry nature can damage body fluids. Using it when the heavenly climate... passes is a contraindication. If urination is free, with or without thirst, one knows there is internal damp-heat. If urination is free and there is thirst, it is internal dryness. Dampness should be drained and leached; dryness should be moistened. This is appropriate. Only for cases with sweating and thirst, use acrid-moistening methods; for cases without sweating and thirst... [text missing]. For Shanghan (Cold Damage) with poor appetite and thirst, use stomach-harmonizing medicines to stop thirst; do not use cold medicines, lest they further damage Stomach Qi, leading to inability to eat. Fuling (Poria) is a stomach-harmonizing medicine. For Taiyang with no sweating and thirst, Baitu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) is unsuitable. If after sweating the pulse is surging and large with thirst, it is suitable. For cases with sweating and thirst, Wuling San is unsuitable. If urination is obstructed, sweating is scant, pulse is floating, and there is thirst, Wuling San is suitable. Human suffering from Heart and Lung Heat... know that it is not in the root of Taiyang or Shaoyin, but only in the branch. If in the branch, there would be no thirst.
