Treatment for carbuncles and sores.
When a carbuncle or sore first appears as a small spot, within one or two days, immediately slice a clove of garlic horizontally to the thickness of a coin, apply it to the center of the lesion, and moxibustion with small moxa cones should be performed. Stop after five moxa cones (zhuang).
If the shape is slightly larger, soak yellow straw paper in wine and cover the entire area. Identify the place that dries first as the "jin jiao" (root of the toxin), and perform moxibustion there. Or perform moxibustion on both places that dry first. However, stop after five to seven moxa cones.
Another method:
Curl your fingers and press around the periphery; the painful spot is the root. Press deeply at this spot until you feel relieved, and perform moxibustion here. Seek other spots for moxibustion as well.
If the swelling is large, crush garlic into a cake, bake it dry, dip it in vinegar, heat it, and apply frequently with changes. Alternatively, use an iron to warm the garlic cake over fire. Frequently replace with hot cakes for warming. If you feel the pathogenic qi of the affected area is spreading, cover it with silk gauze to prevent the qi from escaping. Wait a while before applying medicine. Whenever a carbuncle or sore expands like the shape of a turtle, observe the direction of the head up or down. First, moxibustion the front two feet, then the tail. If red meridians are tight and long, start moxibustion from the end. You must leave the turtle head and the rear two feet un-moxed. If all are moxed, not only will the fire qi accumulate, but the toxin will have nowhere to exit and may attack inward. If identification is unclear, use 3 fen of Baizhi (Rhizoma Angelicae Dahuricae), 1 fen of Hanjiao (Semen Zanthoxyli) and Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), along with ten slices of scallion white including roots. Decoct in fresh water, add half a cup of sour vinegar, and wash the area. After a short while, the meridians will naturally appear, allowing identification of the head and tail.
Another method:
Carbuncles and sores that are swollen, hard, and do not break are called "shi yong" (stone carbuncle). Perform one hundred moxa cones on them.
Carbuncle on the back presenting as a turtle shape.
Whenever the carbuncle on the back resembles a turtle, identify the turtle head. Regardless of left, right, up, or down, take the highest point of swelling as the head. If in doubt, cover with yellow straw paper soaked in vinegar; the place that dries first is the head. Mark it with a pen. For both men and women, use the middle finger of the left hand. Measure the length of the whole finger with grass as the standard. Cut sixteen pieces of grass equally. Place six pieces outside to form the shape of the turtle shell; place six pieces inside the turtle shell; place four pieces in the center. Connect the inner and outer parts. Thus, the positions of the head, tail, and four feet are determined. Mark the tail and feet with a pen, apply garlic paste, and perform moxibustion. First, moxibustion the tail for seven cones. While the fire is not extinguished, moxibustion the rear left foot for seven cones. While still burning, moxibustion the rear right foot for seven cones. Proceed in this manner until reaching the front two feet. Leave the turtle head un-moxed to allow the discharge of toxic vapors. The moxa sticks used should be solid like chopsticks, thick in the middle, cut into moxa cones. This method conforms to Yin and Yang climate conditions and can be used for moxibustion. It is labor-saving and effective.
Treatment for various carbuncle toxins where open sores do not stop bleeding, with severe pain.
Use four moxa cones surrounding the affected area, ignite them simultaneously. Moxibustion each for seven cones; ten cones is better if possible.
Prescription for bone abscess unhealed by hundred methods:
Apply moxibustion on the sore for three days and three nights; no case will fail to heal.
Effective for carbuncle on the back, swollen toxins, and all kinds of malignant sores.
Take one hemp rope. Measure from the major crease of the arm to the transverse crease of the second joint of the middle finger. Extend it to double its length and cut it off. Use this measure to press against the larynx (Jiehou), extend both ends downwards along the spine to the end point. This determines the vertical position. Then use a small paper strip measuring one cun from the proximal phalanx of the thumb as a standard. Place this standard at the marked point on the back, mark a point one cun to the side, and perform moxibustion for five cones. Or seven cones, or ten cones. If already broken, the sore will heal within two or three days after moxibustion. Again, extend one cun from the previous point, mark a new point, and perform moxibustion for five cones. Or seven cones, or ten cones.
For all point-marking using measurement comparison, men use the left side and women use the right side.
Moxibustion for carbuncle on the back.
Whenever you feel swelling, hardness, and pain on the back, stick wet paper on the swelling; the place that dries first is the head. Grind ten cloves of garlic, add half a he of Danchi (Fermented Soybean), and a piece of Ruxiang (Resina Olibanum) the size of a longan fruit. Grind finely. Make a circle with bamboo strips according to the size of the sore; the bamboo strip width is about two fen. Place it on the sore according to the swelling size. Fill the ground medicine flat, spread moxa on the painful area, and perform moxibustion until itching is felt. Then take Baisanzi (White Powder Pill) and apply Qinglianggao (Cooling Ointment). If just swollen and hard without a head, the swelling will clear on the same day. If there is already a head, pus will rupture immediately. It is wonderful beyond words.
Another moxibustion method:
For carbuncles with roots, use Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) processed with Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) and Huangdan (Lithargyrum) overnight according to regulations. Slice it, and perform moxibustion with moxa cones. The root will shrink. Extremely effective.
Moxibustion method for all kinds of carbuncles and sores.
As soon as redness and swelling appear, unbearable pain occurs, with a white head like a millet grain on top. Initially one grain, increasing to five or seven grains in two or three days. Urgent treatment is necessary.
Immediately perform moxibustion with moxa cones on the millet grain. If there is no millet grain, apply moxibustion wherever the toxic qi and pain gather. Moxibustion until the pain stops when pain is felt. Remove the scab the next day, and pus will rupture naturally.
