In cases where febrile diseases cause swelling and pain in the throat, it is due to the accumulation of heat in the Spleen and Lungs that fails to dissipate. Why is this so? The Stomach (Wei) is the sea of water and grain, connecting to the pharyngeal gate. The Lung (Fei) governs Qi and resides above the diaphragm; its Qi channels through the larynx. When pathogenic heat lingers and stagnates in the Spleen and Lungs, it causes swelling and pain in the throat.
