Sudden low back pain is often caused by deficiency and damage of Kidney Qi in individuals suffering from overstrain. The Kidneys govern the waist and legs; their meridians penetrate the Kidneys and connect to the spine. If Wind pathogens invade due to deficiency, causing stagnation of Qi and blood vessels and obstruction of meridians, or if heavy lifting injures the waist, sudden low back pain occurs. Treatment should focus on promoting the circulation of Qi and blood vessels, and regulating the meridians.
