When Shao Yin Jun Huo (Ministerial Fire) governs the Si Tian (Heavenly Qi), Yang Ming Zao Jin (Dryness Metal) governs the Zai Quan (Earthly Qi). The central Yun (Annual Movement) is Tai Gong Tu Yun (Excessive Earth Movement). The annual Earth movement is excessive, and its qi transformation operates ahead of the celestial timing. Heat transformation prevails above.
On the left: The air is solemn. The Mao Chong (Hairy Insects) are depleted; Shi Du (Damp Toxins) do not arise due to the restriction by Earthly Qi. Cold and heat contend at the intersection of Qi, marking the beginning of disease. Heat diseases arise from above; Clear/Cold diseases arise from below. Cold and heat clash in the middle. The people suffer from cough and asthma, hematemesis or hematochezia, nasal congestion and sneezing, red eyes, and skin sores. Cold Jue (Cold Reversal) enters the Stomach, causing Heart pain, lower back pain, abdominal distension, dryness and swelling of the throat.
In this year, Fire is the Heavenly Qi, and Metal is the Earthly Qi. Fire overcomes Metal, and the Heavenly Qi is abundant. It is advisable to first extract the source of transformation before the year begins to calm the Fire Qi. Earth Yun is in the middle. Heavenly Qi generates the Yun, and the Yun generates the Earthly Qi. The three Qi interact harmoniously, proceeding with Shun Hua (Smooth Transformation), so that pathogenic factors become slight. One must suppress the excessive Earth Yun, nourish the victorious Qi of the year, and prevent it from becoming violent and causing disease. Eat Dan (Cinnabar/Red) and Bai (White) grains to preserve True Qi. Eat grains corresponding to the Inter-Qi to ward off empty pathogens. For treatment in this year, use Salty flavors to disperse, Sour flavors to astringe and settle the lower part. If severe, use Bitter flavors to drain. Adjust the quantity according to the similarities and differences of the Qi.
The transformation above should be Salty-Cold; in the middle, Bitter-Hot; below, Sour-Hot. This is appropriate for medicines and foods.
Before the midpoint of the year, Shao Yin governs. The transformation of Shao Yin is Heat. If Heat is excessively prevalent, Fu Re (Stagnant Heat) arrives, and Fire exercises its administration. The people suffer from vexation and heat in the chest, and swelling of the throat.
After the midpoint of the year, Yang Ming governs. The Qi of Yang Ming is Dryness. If Dryness is excessively prevalent internally, fog, clarity, and dimness occur. The people tend to vomit, with bitter vomitus, and frequent sighing.
When dried marshes produce fish, great wind and rain arrive, earth cracks, and scaled creatures appear on land. Diseases include abdominal fullness, loose stools, borborygmus, and leakage. If Tai Yin pulse becomes absent, death is inevitable and untreatable.
First Qi Period: From Shen Chu (early Shen hour) of Da Han (Major Cold) day in Gui Si Year to Wu Chu (early Wu hour) of Chun Fen (Spring Equinox) day in this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Main Position is Tai Jiao Mu (Great Wood), Guest Qi is Tai Yang Water, and Central Yun is Earth. Earthly Qi shifts; Dryness departs, Cold begins. Hibernating animals hide again; water freezes; frost falls again; wind arrives. Yang Qi is depressed. People require dense clothing; joints become stiff and fixed; waist pain occurs. As hot summer approaches, sores and ulcers arise inside and outside. Treatment should address the Guest Qi of Tai Yang: Tonify with Bitter, Drain with Salty, Firm with Bitter, Moisten with Pungent. Annual grain should be Dan (Red); Inter-grain should be Ji (Millet). Although Cold pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm.
Second Qi Period: From Wu Zheng (mid-Wu hour) of Chun Fen to Chen Zheng (mid-Chen hour) of Xiao Man (Grain Full), totaling over 60 days. Main Position is Shao Zheng Fire, Guest Qi is Jue Yin Wood, Central Yun is Earth. Wood overcomes Earth; Yang Qi spreads; Wind moves. Spring Qi arrives; all things flourish. Hot Qi arrives; people are peaceful. Diseases include strangury, eye closure/redness, Qi stagnation above with heat. Treat the Guest Qi of Jue Yin: Tonify with Pungent, Drain with Sour, Soothe with Sweet. Annual grain should be Dan; Inter-grain should be Dao (Rice). Although Wind pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm.
Third Qi Period: From Si Chu (early Si hour) of Xiao Man to Mao Chu (early Mao hour) of Da Shu (Great Heat), totaling over 60 days. Main Position is Shao Zheng Fire, Guest Qi is Shao Yin Fire, Central Yun is Earth. Two Fires combine; Heavenly Administration spreads; Great Fire moves. All species flourish. Cold Qi arrives. People suffer from Qi Jue (Qi Reversal) and Heart pain, alternating cold and heat, cough, asthma, and red eyes. Treat the Guest Qi of Shao Yin: Tonify with Salty, Drain with Sweet, Astringe with Sour. Annual grain should be Dan; Inter-grain should be Dou (Beans). Although Heat pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm.
Fourth Qi Period: From Mao Zheng (mid-Mao hour) of Da Shu to Chou Zheng (mid-Chou hour) of Qiu Fen (Autumn Equinox), totaling over 60 days. Main Position is Tai Gong Earth, Guest Qi is Tai Yin Earth, Central Yun is Earth. Qi and Yun are identical and in their proper position, called Si Qi (Governing Qi). Humid heat arrives; heavy rain frequently occurs. Cold and heat alternate. People suffer from cold and heat, dry throat, jaundice, nasal congestion/epistaxis, and fluid retention disorders. Regulate the Guest Qi of Tai Yin: Tonify with Sweet, Drain with Bitter, Soothe with Sweet. Annual grain should be Bai (White); Inter-grain should be Ma (Hemp). Although Dampness transforms, it cannot become a pathogen. Do not violate the Si Qi during this period.
Fifth Qi Period: From Yin Chu (early Yin hour) of Qiu Fen to Zi Chu (early Zi hour) of Xiao Xue (Minor Snow), totaling over 60 days. Main Position is Shao Shang Metal, Guest Qi is Shao Yang Fire, Central Yun is Earth. Wei Huo (Feared Fire) descends; summer heat returns. Yang Qi transforms; all things grow, develop, and flourish. People are healthy. Diseases are Wen Bing (Warm Diseases). Treat the Guest Qi of Shao Yang: Tonify with Salty, Drain with Sweet, Disperse with Salty. Annual grain should be Bai; Inter-grain should be Dou. Although Fire pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm.
Final Qi Period: From Zi Zheng (mid-Zi hour) of Xiao Xue to Xu Zheng (mid-Xu hour) of Da Han, totaling over 60 days. Main Position is Tai Yu Water, Guest Qi is Yang Ming Metal, Central Yun is Earth. Earth generates Metal; Dryness command executes. Residual fire is blocked internally, causing swelling above and cough/asthma. Severe cases involve hematemesis. Cold Qi rises frequently, causing foggy obscurity. Disease arises in the skin and interstices, resides internally in the hypochondrium, connects downward to the lower abdomen, causing Cold Zhong (Middle Cold). Earthly Qi is changing. Treat the Guest Qi of Yang Ming: Tonify with Sour, Drain with Pungent, Drain with Bitter. Annual grain should be Bai; Inter-grain should be Shu (Glutinous Millet). Although Dryness pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm.
In this year, if Fire wins, Water retaliates; if Metal wins, Fire retaliates. This is the principle of Qi Sheng (Victory) and Fu (Retaliation). If victory is minor, follow and harmonize it. If severe, control it. If retaliation is slight, level it. If violent, deprive it. Always follow the winning Qi, pacify the suppressed Qi, regardless of number, aiming for balance.
