The *Neijing* states: When Yang Qi is affected, extreme anger causes the form and Qi to become severed, stagnating in the upper part, causing a person to suffer from *Bo Jue* (Sudden Fainting due to Anger). The Qi of Heaven is pure and clear; when it remains so, the mind and will are regulated. Complying with it makes Yang Qi solid. If external objects provoke it, anger causes Qi to ascend, leading to a disconnection between form and Qi, with Blood following Qi upward. Thus, the symptoms manifest as stagnation in the chest, combined with Qi conflict resulting in syncope.
Formula: Huang Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction - Note: Text says "Huang Tang", likely referring to a specific formula named Huang Tang, possibly containing Huang Qin/Coptis based on context or typo for Gui Zhi Tang, but strictly translating text). It treats resentment and anger causing Qi rebellion, ascending without descending, thereby injuring the Liver. Blood stagnates in the chest, causing *Bo Jue*. Severe cases may present with hematemesis (vomiting blood) and irritability/distress.
Ingredients: Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, 2 liang, crushed), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, removed woody part), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, removed heart and baked), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, removed coarse bark), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, soaked in water, removed white pith and baked), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, dosage unspecified).
Usage: Take 5 qian per dose.
Chifupling Tang (Red Poria Decoction) (from *Xuanming Lun*): Treats sudden anger causing Qi rebellion, chest discomfort, severe cases presenting with hematemesis and epistaxis (nosebleed).
Ingredients: Chifuling (Radix et Rhizoma Poria, removed black heart), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 3 liang each), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, removed radicle), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, soaked, removed white pith and baked, 1 liang each), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, removed heart, dosage unspecified).
Usage: Divide into doses, take warm after removing dregs.
Dazao Tang (Jujube Decoction) (from *Shengji Zonglu*): Treats anger injuring the Liver, chest stagnation, even to the point of hematemesis. This is because Qi and Blood struggle against each other leading to syncope.
Ingredients: Dazao (Fructus Jujubae, 15 pieces, removed core, baked and separately pounded), Shenggan Dihuang (Rhizoma Rehmanniae Praeparata, 8 liang, sliced and baked), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, roasted until dry), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, roasted and crushed, 3 liang each).
Usage: Except for Ejiao, decoct the remaining herbs, remove dregs, dissolve Ejiao in the liquid, take once at night.
Generally, resentment and anger causing Qi rebellion ascending without descending injures the Liver. Liver injury leads to dry and dark complexion of the face and eyes, bitter taste in the mouth, inability of spirit to remain, fearfulness preventing solitary sleeping, and severe cases involving tendon spasms.
For Liver Lao (Liver Exhaustion/Chronic Liver Disease), one should tonify Heart Qi to benefit it. When Heart Qi is prosperous, it influences the Liver. If people violate the Qi of Spring, the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder channel fails to generate, causing internal changes in Liver Qi.
Formula: Bugan Tang (Tonify Liver Decoction): Treats Liver Lao with hypochondriac pain, rapid breathing, inappropriate worry/anger, blueish complexion, emaciation, and tendon/spasm rigidity.
Ingredients: Tiandongmen (Herba Asparagi), Xixin (Herba Asari), Chifuling (Radix et Rhizoma Poria, removed black skin), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae, removed seedlings and soil), Szaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, slightly fried), Chongwezi (Fructus Elsholtziae, roasted), Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, vinegar-processed), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, removed coarse bark).

One should first take medicines to resolve Lung pathology, then regulate Liver Lao Qi. However, if one contracts Lao Qi and does not treat it early, allowing cough to reach extremity before transmitting to Liver and seeking medicine, it is already too late. This formula is made to clarify the sequence of disease transmission among the Five Elements. If Liver organ is congested with heat, blood and Qi are turbid and stagnant, yet due to labor/injury, the Liver self-contracts Wind-Lao Qi, this is not the sequence of Five Element transmission. If initially contracting Lao Qi presents with these symptoms, this formula should also be prepared.
