Muli Dahuang Decoction (Oyster Shell and Rhubarb Decoction)
Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Muli), Costi Radix (Muxiang), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, prepared by baking, equal parts). Cut the herbs into small pieces. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1.5 sheng of water, decoct until 0.7 sheng remains. In spring and summer, leave exposed to the air overnight. Take on an empty stomach at the time of rooster crowing. In winter, leave in a warm place overnight. Pregnant women should not take this medicine. This medicine promotes bowel movement significantly; stop taking it after two or three bowel movements.

Another prescription: Specifically treats carbuncles, sores, and back carbuncles, as well as all kinds of malignant ulcers. Lituo San is superior to Neibu San, does not use warming herbs, and is easy to prepare. Personally tested and effective.
Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi, 3 liang), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 2 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 1 liang). Pound the herbs into coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1.5 sheng of water, decoct until 0.8 sheng remains. Take orally at once. No specific time restriction.

Jiedu San (Antidote Powder): Treats back carbuncles and sores before redness, swelling, and severe pain appear.
Manis Pentadactyla Squama (Chuanshanjia, stir-fried with Arsenici Albi Pulvis until scorched, take 1 liang of scales), Costi Radix (Muxiang, 0.5 liang), Streptopeliae Faeces (Baidingxiang, 1 fen). Grind into fine powder. Take 2 zhi per dose, mixed with Trichosanthis Fructus wine. No specific time restriction.

Binlian San (Betel Nut and Coptis Powder, also known as Shengxiao San): Treats carbuncles, sores, and swellings; can be applied externally whether ulcerated or not.
Arecae Semen (Binglang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 0.5 liang each), Manis Pentadactyla Squama (Chuanshanjia, 10 large scales, calcined to retain character). Grind into powder. First, apply good tea to the lesion, brush over the sore with a feather. Then mix the powder with tea liquor and apply to the sore. If heat is severe, mix with egg white. Once pus has drained, use flesh-regenerating medicine. If drainage is not smooth, use Zhenzhen Wan. If the sore opening is visible, use this medicine several times, then apply Wanjin Gao. When pus is exhausted and foul tissue sloughs off, use Shengji San. Another formula is Ruxiang Gao.

Duoming San (Life-Restoring Powder): Treats various malignant sores where toxic heat penetrates inward, causing vomiting, confusion, coma, and unconsciousness.
Rhei Palmati Radix et Rhizoma (Chuan Dahuang, 1 liang), Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Muli, calcined, 0.5 liang), Borneolum Syntheticum (Longnao, 1 zhi for administration). Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 3 sheng of good wine, decoct until 2 sheng remains. Let cool, add half a zhi of crystalline borneol. Divide into three doses. Stop when bowels are unblocked.

Zhidu Xinxiao Wan (Toxin-Chasing Efficacious Pill): Treats malignant sores, carbuncles, boils, and toxic swellings with stifling pain; invigorates blood and heals sores.
Mingxin Ashi (Mingxin Pi), Minii Oxidum Rubrum (Qiandan, 0.5 liang each), Mung Bean Starch (Lvdou Fen, 1 qian). Grind and melt together. Add 1 qian 1 zhi of wax and 5 drops of oil to form pills the size of large barley grains. Insert into the sore. First wash the sore with warm grain water, dry with a soft cloth, then apply Baiyu Gao (made from calcined Calcitris Fibrosa, ground to powder).

Chuanshanjia San (Pangolin Scale Powder): Treats various pains from carbuncles and sores that have not yet come to a head.
Manis Pentadactyla Squama (Chuansan jia, 1 liang, stir-fried), Trichosanthis Radix (Tianhuafen, 2 liang), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 2 liang). Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with wine.

Zhuinong San (Pus-Chasing Powder): Treats carbuncles and sores not yet ruptured; uses this medicine to induce suppuration and dry up pus.
Frankincense (Ruxiang, 0.5 liang, ground), Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 10 seeds, husked, slightly de-oiled), Realgar (Xionghuang, 0.5 liang, ground). Grind into fine powder. Take a small amount and apply to the soft area. Another formula adds a little Moschus (Shexiang), made into pills using steamed dough, formed into small ingots.

Yeming Sha Gao (Glareolae Faeces Ointment): For ulcerated swellings and draining pus.
Glareolae Faeces (Yemingsha, 1 liang), Cinnamomi Cortex (Lagui, 0.5 liang), Frankincense (Ruxiang, 1 fen). Grind into fine powder. Mix with 0.5 liang of dry sugar. Apply as ointment mixed with well water.

Xingwu San (Star and Aconite Powder): Treats carbuncles and sores that have formed knots but not yet ulcerated.
Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Tiannanxing), Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Caowutou), Cinnamomi Cortex (Lagui, equal parts). Grind into powder. Mix with wine or vinegar for application. Cover with soft white paper. Reapply if not ulcerated.

Liandu San (Toxin-Collecting Powder): Applied around the perimeter to collect toxins.
Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Nanxing), Phaseoli Semen Adzukii (Chixiaodou), Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji, equal parts). Grind into powder. Mix with well water and apply around the perimeter. Secure with soft silk.

Gongxie San (Centipede and Scorpion Powder): Treats carbuncle sores with small, hard openings where pus cannot exit despite plaster application, indicating dominance of wind-toxin.
Use one Periplaneta americana (Chi Zu Wugong, remove head and feet), three full-body Scorpionis Scorpio (Quanxie, with complete tail, used raw), 1 qian of Costi Radix (Muxiang). Grind into fine powder. Before use, wash the carbuncle with pig trotter soup, dry with silk to remove toxin. Take 1 zhi per dose, sprinkle onto a coin-sized piece of plaster, pile on the sore opening. Effect is miraculous. When using Shenyi Gao, first measure the carbuncle size, spread on paper flower, then sprinkle this medicine on the plaster to ensure it reaches the sore opening first. Do not use if the sore opening is wide and not hard. If caused by wind-pathogen, decoct five stalks of Allium fistulosum bulb base (Lian Gen Congbai), add 0.5 liang of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix powder (Baizhi), filter clear liquid and wash. Wash again the next day. Also take Buhuanjin Zhengqi San.

Zaoci San (Gleditsia Sinensis Spine Powder): Treats carbuncles and sores; disseminates toxin and drains pus; take at the beginning.
Purple-black Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Zaocimu Ci), Trichosanthis Fructus with peel (Gualou, equal parts), Trogopterori Faeces (Beiwulingzhi, halved). Cut finely. Take 4 qian per dose. Add two large sheng of wine, decoct until 0.6 sheng remains. Add a little Frankincense, take warm. Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina can disseminate toxin.

Wanjinyi Zui Gao (Ten-Thousand-Gold One-Drunken Ointment): Treats carbuncles, sores, and back carbuncles; guides out malignant nodules and swelling/pain; for brain/back sores whether ulcerated or not; drains pus and supports interior. Also treats female breast abscesses. Also known as Wanjin Tang.
One Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou, peeled and crushed), 0.5 liang of raw Licorice Root coarse powder (Sheng Gancao), 2.5 qian of Myrrha dissolved in water (Moyao). Add three large bowls of red wine, decoct in a silver vessel until half remains. Divide into two doses, take warm. Take after meals for upper body lesions, before meals for lower body lesions. Severe cases take another dose. Recovery is indicated by bleeding or yellow fluid discharge. Another formula adds Danggui, Baizhi, and high-quality Frankincense. To further disseminate toxin, add 1 fen of purple Gleditsia spine. Another name is Gualou Jiu. If constipation occurs, alternate with Badu San (see previous formula).

Shengjiang Ganjie Tang (Fresh Ginger and Platycodon Decoction): Treats various carbuncle/sores eruptions where toxic heat rushes upward to the throat, causing chest/sternum stuffiness and difficulty.
Platycodonis Radix (Beigeng, remove rhizome, 1 liang), raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gancao), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 0.5 liang each). Cut finely. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct in well water.

Tuoli Huangqi Tang (Support-Interior Astragalus Decoction): Treats carbuncles, sores, back carbuncles, beard/chin hair follicle infections, sideburn infections, eyebrow infections, brain infections, and female breast abscesses. Relieves pain and removes toxin.
Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou), Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi, 0.5 liang each), roasted Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao, 2 qian). Divide into two doses. Each dose: add 1.5 sheng water, 0.5 sheng wine, decoct until 1 sheng remains. Strain, take warm. If pus has formed, add a little Gleditsia spine. If no pus, follow the main formula strictly.

Tizhen Dingxiang Wan (Needle-Replacing Clove Pill)
Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix tip (Caowu Jian), Sand (Sha), Streptopeliae Faeces (Baidingxiang, firm ones). Grind into powder. Mix with sour vinegar, apply to areas about to rupture to accelerate suppuration. In emergencies, knife incision is faster. Leech therapy is also excellent.

Lianchuangkou San (Sore-Mouth-Closing Powder): Treats carbuncles, sores, and back carbuncles, regardless of gender. First, take many doses of Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang to guide out foul matter. Adjust dosage based on age and strength. Next, take Tuoli San for several doses. Then take Neibu Shixuan San without limit on number of doses. Externally apply Siwei San around the perimeter, leaving a small hole in the center; do not cover completely. Must leave a small hole for gas escape. The peripheral powder is as follows:
Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma peeled (Tiannanxing, peeled, 3 qian each), Trichosanthis Radix (Tianhuafen, 3 qian each), Hibisci Mutabilis Folium (Furongye, 4 qian). Grind into powder. Apply with Trogopterori Faeces, Banana leaf, and egg white. For redness/swelling, add Huangpi. If swelling/pain persists or for closing the wound, use Taohong San.

Taohong San (Peach Red Powder)
Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, processed), Minii Oxidum Rubrum (Hongdan, stir-fried). Grind these three into powder. Apply dry.

Another Formula
Vitis Confinata Fructus (Wumei, burnt to ash), Halloysitum Rubrum (Chishizhi), Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Muli). Grind together into powder. Mix with honey for application.

She Nong Wan (Pus-Shooting Pill): Treats various boils and pustules where pus has formed; should be punctured to drain old, foul, bad blood. If bad blood does not exit, needle/lancet must be used first. Use this medicine to shoot out the pus.
Arsenical Trioxide (Pishuang, 0.5 qian), Alum (Baifan, 1 qian), Minii Oxidum Rubrum (Hongdan, 1 zhi). Grind into powder. Make pills with wheat paste, shape into ingots. Apply to the sore head where pus is about to emerge, cover with plaster to induce spontaneous rupture.

Excellent Prescription for Carbuncles, Sores, Cancerous Ulcers, and Malignant Wounds
Human Hair (Shengfa, burnt to retain character, 3 fen), Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Zaojiaoci, burnt retaining some rawness, 2 fen), Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji, 1 fen). Grind into fine powder. Sprinkle dry or mix with well water for application. Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina helps distribute the effects of other herbs.

Shenxian Huangfan Wan (Immortal Yellow Alum Pill, also known as Huangla Wan): This medicine stops pain, does not disturb the viscera. Also treats carbuncles, sores, back carbuncles, and toxic wounds; effective for all kinds of malignant sores.
Alum (Baifan, 1 liang, bright quality, ground), Yellow Wax (Huangla, 0.5 liang, yellow quality, melted). Mix and form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 10 pills per dose. Gradually increase to 20 pills. Swallow with cooked water or warm wine. Unruptured sores resolve internally; ruptured sores heal quickly. If mineral medicines cause sores, take 1 spoonful of Alum powder mixed with warm wine. Effective in 3-5 doses. Someone with body-wide sores like snake heads found this effective. Other formulas claim miracle cures but require nearly 100 pills to work. This medicine prevents toxic heat from attacking inward by protecting membranes. Do not underestimate its simplicity. For fistulas, mix Oil-Hair Ash with Gallus Gallus Domesticus Internal Membrane powder into pills; take up to half a jin. Best taken after healing. Suitable for all ages. Doses over 1 liang are always effective. Another formula for snake bites: melt Alum, drip hot onto wound to stop pain immediately and expel toxin. Alum is a major detoxifier. Proven miraculous. Cannot list all benefits.

Rendong Jiu (Honeysuckle Wine): Treats carbuncles, sores, and back carbuncles; should be taken at the onset. Effective regardless of location: eyebrows, cheeks, head, neck, back, waist, ribs, female breast abscesses, hands, feet. Also effective when combined with Maifan Shi Gao and Shenyi Gao application.
Fresh Honeysuckle Vine (Rendongteng, take a handful, leaves pounded in mortar with a little rice cake wine/raw wine is best, adjust consistency for application around perimeter, leave large opening in center to vent toxin, use only 5 liang of vine, beat gently with wooden mallet, avoid iron), Large Licorice Root Joint (Da Gancaojie, 1 liang, raw cut). Put in clay bottle, add 2 sheng water, decoct slowly over medium-low heat until 1 sheng remains. Add 1 large sheng of pure good wine, boil 10+ times, strain. Divide into 3 warm doses. Drink all within one day and night. If severe, take two doses in one day and night. Efficacy confirmed when bowels/bladder open. Shen Nei Han said: if fresh unavailable, use dried, but dried is less potent and slower. Also, 49 leaves of Millettia Speciosa (Mu Lianzi Ye), rub off hairs, grind fine, take with wine warm. Effect comparable to Honeysuckle. Also, one handful of Ficus pumila (Longlin Bili), grind fine, take juice with wine warm. Can also purge foul matter and remove root cause. Honeysuckle vine does not wither in winter, hence the name. Winds left around trees/vines, often on garden walls/fences. Square stem, purple leaves, green like Ficus. Hence also called Zochanteng (Left-Winding Vine). Flowers in Feb, five petals, slight fragrance, red calyx. Flowers white initially, turn yellow after 1-2 days. Hence also known as Jinyinhua (Gold-Silver Flower), Lusitian Teng (Egret Vine), Jinchaigu (Gold Hairpin Stick), Laoweng Xu (Old Man's Beard). Excellent for carbuncles/back carbuncles, superior to Hongneixiao. Also treats five types of Feishi (flying corpse disease). Apply dregs to swollen/toxic areas.

Xi Yao Shenxiao San (Washing Medicine Divine Niter Powder)
Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi, 2 liang, coarse powder), Mirabilitum (Puxiao, 1 liang, ground). Mix evenly. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 sheng water, boil 3-5 times, strain. Wash with warm liquid, then sprinkle powder to close sore.

Muli Dihuang Gao (Oyster Shell and Rehmannia Ointment): Treats carbuncles not yet ruptured, swelling/pain.
Rhei Palmati Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 1 liang, ground), Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Muli, sealed with salt mud, calcined to remove fire toxicity, left overnight, ground extremely fine, weigh 2 liang). Mix with natural juice of fresh Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Dihuang) for application. When dry, brush with Rehmannia juice. Above formulas treat carbuncles not yet ruptured. After rupture, apply to corners, adjust for remaining swelling. Another formula: use Dahuang powder alone, mix with vinegar for application. Another formula: Maodie Cai (also known as Qufeng Cao), treats various carbuncles/boils, malignant sores, ear issues. Leaves/stems have white hairs, white flowers, seeds green turning red, pulp inside. Also treats wind-toxin tinea pedis. Boil a basin of water, soak herbs, cool, wash feet. Reduces swelling/pain effectively.

Heiqian Jiu Fang (Black Lead Wine Formula): Treats back carbuncles and various toxic sores spreading to brain, painful infiltration/ulceration.
Black Lead (Heiqian, 1 jin), Licorice Root (Gancao, 3 liang, lightly roasted). Add 1 dou of wine next to an empty bottle. First put Gancao in wine bottle, then melt lead and pour into wine bottle. Pour wine back into empty bottle to retrieve lead. Repeat melting/pouring nine times. Remove Gancao and lead, use only the wine. Have patient drink until drunk/sleepy, then cured.

Treatment for Carbuncles, Sores, Back Carbuncles, and Brain Carbuncles, regardless of duration (old/new), various malignant sores, cold fistulas, thigh sores. (Also known as Miaosheng San)
Collect fallen Eggplant Flowers in July/August, remove sepals. Collect Yellow Hibiscus Flowers in August/September, remove stamen/sepal. Dry thoroughly. Grind to equal parts fine powder. Before each dose, rinse sore with grain water, dry with soft cloth. Sprinkle powder dry. If slight redness/swelling/hard pain occurs, mix with grain water to thin paste, sweep on affected area with goose feather, cover with gauze. For brain carbuncles, no washing needed; just wipe pus/blood dry with cloth, sprinkle powder. Change daily. Three doses miraculous. Avoid pork, fish, wet noodles, chicken/sheep/goose fat, fried/grilled foods, toxic substances for 50 days.

Chen's Empirical Formula states: I often reflect that people suffer from disease, while mediocre doctors seek profit. When they encounter famous prescriptions, they exploit urgency, demanding endless payment. If unsatisfied, they cause harm. Rich find it unbearable, poor suffer more. Thus, when I find famous prescriptions, I strive to spread them widely. Noble or humble, all get good medicine, free of suffering. I now have a simple, miraculous remedy for back carbuncles. Do not think herbs are easy to obtain and despise it. Its wonder is indescribable. I distributed it in Lin'an, saving ~50-60 people. In Jinling, saved 100+. Knowing its miraculous power, I record this formula, carve blocks to spread to four seas. May all get this medicine to save suffering. Those who hide or destroy it will be punished by spirits. I urge colleagues to spread it. This postscript author unknown, but words are earnest, implying source and efficacy. Having obtained it, I dare not withhold, to fulfill this good wish.

Rusheng San (Like-Sage Powder, also known as Zaozhen San): Treats malignant sores, back/brain carbuncles, cold abscesses, blowing breast, trauma.
Licorice Root (Gancao, 1.5 liang, half raw half roasted), Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina Needle (Zaojiaoci Zhen, 3 qian, burnt to retain character). Grind fine. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with wine. Any time. If heat is severe, take below Xiongjian Wan. This formula has proven miraculous repeatedly. Even taking several sheng is harmless.

Tenghuang Zhu Jiu San (Yellow Stem Boiled Wine Powder): Treats carbuncle/sores swellings deep in abdomen attached to bone, skin not hot despite swelling, dangerous color, or gan sores, female breast carbuncles, all qi-blood disharmony, stagnation nodules contracting skin on tendons/bones, inability to walk.
Egret Vine (Lusitian Teng, stems/leaves dried 2 liang, flowers better), Raw Rehmannia Root (Sheng Dihuang, dried 1 liang). Grind coarse. Add 4 sheng wine to large bottle, seal tightly with oil paper/bamboo leaf, suspend in pot, boil 200-300 times. Cool after fragrant/cooked. Filter wine through silk in bottle. Take 1 sheng per dose, 3 times day, 1 time night. Take warm/cool as desired.

Xuandu Yizui Gao (Dispersing-Toxin One-Drunken Ointment)
Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou, one peeled), Old Man's Beard (Laowengxu, 1.5 liang, baked). Cut. Decoct equal parts wine/water briefly. Add 49 Sichuan Pepper grains (Zheng Chuanjiao, opened). Near completion, add little Frankincense and Myrrha powder. Take as desired.

Xuandu Fang (Dispersing-Toxin Formula)
Mylabris (Banmao, one, remove wings only), Good Jujube (Hao Dazao, one, pit removed, wrap Banmao, insert into pig kidney slit, tie with green bamboo leaf, wrap wet paper, bake熟, remove Banmao). Eat pig kidney on empty stomach, take with warm wine.

Formula for Carbuncle/Sore Toxin Entering Viscera, Vomiting, Aversion to Food
Licorice Root (Gancao, roasted 0.5 liang), Clove (Dingxiang, 3.5 qian). Cut finely. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct in water. Add little Moschus, take warm.

Xianling San (Immortal Spirit Powder): Treats carbuncle/sores swelling/toxicity; reduces swelling with application, collects toxin, drains pus.
Slippery Orchid Skin (Hualan Pi, ground), Purple Shell Grass (Zibeicao, pounded). Pound together, mix with wine to make ointment for application. Or mix with honey water. Hualan extracts toxin, Zibeib disperses blood. Using Zibeib alone is also effective.

Chuanwu San (Chuanwu Powder): Urgent use for initial carbuncle/sores eruption.
Aconiti Radix Preparata (Chuanwu), Antliidae Nest Soil (Minglingke Tu, equal parts). Grind fine. Mix with method vinegar for application. Unknotted scatters; knotted suppurates.

Shouduwai Xiao Gao (Collect-Toxin External Resolve Ointment): Closes sores. Also known as Neixiao Gao.
Yellow Bright Cowhide Glue (Huangming Niujiao, dissolve 1 liang in 0.5 sheng long-flowing water), Guo Dan (Re-boil, stir urgently with willow branch 5-6 boils, weight 1 liang). Wait cool, store in porcelain. Spread on sore with chicken feather, leave opening. If unruptured, swelling resolves spontaneously.

Baoan Miao Tie San (Security Excellent Paste Powder): Treats carbuncles, sores, back carbuncles, swelling/toxicity.
Transparent Sulfur (Touming Liuhuang, fine powder), Buckwheat Flour (Qiaomai Mian, 2 liang each). Mix with well water, make cakes, bake dry, store. To harmonize sulfur nature, grind again before use. Add little Frankincense, mix with well water, apply thickly to sore. If dry, moisten with new water using chicken feather.

Neituo San (Support-Interior Dispersing Powder, also known as Fenru Tuoli San, Xiangfen San): Treats brain/sideburn/beard infections, breast abscesses, carbuncles/sores, swelling/toxicity, malignant sores, back carbuncles internal ulceration, and various malignant toxins rushing to heart, vomiting, or heart pain. Effective in 3 doses. Supports interior, stops pain, relieves thirst, reduces deficiency heat. Continue until healed. Pain becomes non-pain, non-pain becomes pain. Miraculous.
Mung Bean Starch (Lvdou Fen, 1 liang, ground), Frankincense (Ruxiang, 1 fen, slow-fire roast in silver vessel until kneadable, pour on paper, fan cool, grind fine, mix with 1-2 liang Lvdou Fen; alternative: 1 liang ground in mortar sitting in water). Grind extremely fine. Take 2-3 qian per dose. For malignant carbuncles/sores, mix with strong decocted Licorice Root soup, take warm before bed. For all carbuncles/back carbuncles internal ulceration and malignant toxic heat rushing inward causing烦躁/vomiting (extremely severe condition), take 1 qian mixed with fresh drawn water. Water need not be much, want it above diaphragm to support interior toxin, prevent inward attack. Take 3 doses daily, can save life. Also treats trauma/internal injuries, snake/insect bites. Take with warm wine on empty stomach. Minor cases resolve internally; major damage eliminates bad blood via large intestine. Whenever carbuncle/sores pus/blood exits and before convergence, frequently take this. Another formula: Rudou Gao, treats carbuncle/boil pain. Take 1 liang Mung Bean meat, wrap Frankincense/Bamboo leaf, iron with iron, grind 1 part to powder, mix with wine for application, cover with umbrella paper, reapply if dry, subsequently change to reduce-swelling/drain-pus medicine. Another formula: if sore is dull/deep, take 1 qian Danggui, 2 qian Lagui decocted in soup, assist with Jiawei Buhuanjin Zhengqi San. For infantile smallpox sinking, Fenru San can save.
