The condition known as "Zhuan Mai" (Rotating Pulse) arises from excessive drinking leading to drunkenness, restless sleep at night, frequent fright and nausea, and improper pillow positioning during turning over. Initially, the symptoms manifest in the neck and nape region; the pulse rotates, and the body feels as if vibrating, causing alternating chills and fever. The root of this condition lies in the Small Intestine.
Prescriptions
Banmao Baizhi Wan (Spider Beetle and Angelica Dahurica Pill), sourced from *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold), treats Zhuan Mai. The condition begins in the neck and nape, with a rotating pulse sensation, frightful agitation, body tremors, and alternating chills and fever. This results from being frightened while lying down with an improper pillow. The root is in the Small Intestine. Spider Beetle (*Mylabris*) is the principal herb, and Angelica Dahurica (*Baizhi*) serves as the assistant herb.
Spider Beetle (*Mylabris*, remove head, feet, and wings, stir-fry with glutinous rice until yellow), Angelica Dahurica (*Baizhi*), Green Qing (likely referring to a specific mineral or processed herb, literal: *Lüqing*), Rhubarb (*Dahuang*) (each 3 liang), Cimicifuga (*Shengma*), Gypsum Fibrosum (*Zhongru*), Licorice (*Gancao*), Saposhnikovia (*Fangfeng*), Ground Beetle (*Didan*, remove head, feet, and wings, stir-fry with glutinous rice until yellow), Teasel Root (*Xuduan*), Musk (*Shexiang*), Alum (*Fanshi*) (each 1 liang), Ginseng (*Renshen*), Angelica Sinensis (*Danggui*), Cinnamon Heart (*Guixin*) (each 2 liang), Atractylodes Macrocephala (*Baizhu*), Ophiopogon (*Maimendong*) (each 1 liang). Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of soybeans. Take 10 pills with wine, three times daily. Avoid raw vegetables. Abstain from sexual activity for 100 days. *Waitai Miyao* (Secret Essentials of the Outer Palace) omits Rhubarb, Cinnamon Heart, Ophiopogon, Atractylodes Macrocephala, and Gypsum Fibrosum.
Banmao Wan (Spider Beetle Pill), sourced from *Shenghui Fang* (Prescriptions of Holy Grace), treats Zhuan Mai manifesting in the neck, characterized by swelling, pain, chills, fever, and discharge of pus and fluid.
Spider Beetle (*Mylabris*, 1 fen, remove head, feet, and wings, stir-fry with glutinous rice until rice-yellow), Ginseng (*Renshen*, 3 fen, remove rhizome), Ground Beetle (*Didan*, 1 fen, remove head, feet, and wings, stir-fry with glutinous rice until rice-yellow), Angelica Sinensis (*Danggui*, 3 liang), Sichuan Cimicifuga (*Chuan Shengma*, 3 fen), Ophiopogon (*Maimendong*, remove heart, 1 fen, bake), Atractylodes Macrocephala (*Baizhu*, 3 fen), Sichuan Rhubarb (*Chuan Dahuang*, 3 fen, lightly stir-fry), Gypsum Fibrosum Powder (*Zhongru Fen*, 3 fen), Cinnamon Heart (*Guixin*, 3 fen), Licorice (*Gancao*, 1 fen, cut and roast until slightly red), Saposhnikovia (*Fangfeng*, 0.5 liang, remove rhizome), Teasel Root (*Xuduan*, 3 fen), Musk (*Shexiang*, 1 fen), White Alum (*Bai Fan*, 1 liang, calcine until moisture is exhausted). Grind the above herbs into fine powder, then mix thoroughly with the already ground ingredients. Beat with refined honey for 200-300 strokes to form pills the size of golden oak seeds. Take 10 pills with wine per dose, three times daily.
Liaoqiao San (Forsythia Powder), also known as Liaoqiao Wan (Forsythia Pill), sourced from *Shenghui Fang*, treats Zhuan Mai manifesting between the neck and nape, accompanied by chills, fever, and pus formation. (See prescription in the "Chills and Fever" category of this section.)
