General principles: In spring and summer, it is appropriate to induce sweating.
(Because in spring and summer, Yang Qi floats on the exterior, and pathogenic factors also remain on the exterior; therefore, inducing sweating is applicable.)
When inducing sweating, one should aim for uniform, mild perspiration over the hands, feet, and entire body, lasting approximately the time it takes to eat a meal, which is ideal. One must not allow sweat to pour out profusely like flowing water. (If sweat emerges slowly, both exterior and interior pathogens are eliminated; if sweat pours out excessively, pathogens remain while Yang Qi is lost. Deficiency of Yang leads to depletion of Body Fluids, hence forcing sweating again is contraindicated.)
When administering decoctions to induce sweating, stop once the disease resolves; there is no need to consume the entire dose. For conditions where sweating is indicated but no decoction is available, pills or powders may be used, provided that sweating occurs as the sign of resolution.
(The *Shengji Jing* states: Decoctions treat diseases primarily through the Cou Li (interstitial spaces); for conditions involving stagnation and郁结 (stagnation/accumulation) requiring the expulsion of pathogens, decoctions are suitable. The *Jingui Yufan* states: Water can purify all things...)
If the patient's pulse is floating and large, and upon inquiry, the patient reports only hard stool, using purgatives constitutes a major error. Hard stool indicates interior excess; however, relief should be sought through sweating. Why? A floating pulse indicates the pathogen is at the exterior, warranting sweating. (The classics state: With a floating and large pulse, sweating is indicated; if the physician instead uses purgation, it is a major error. Although hard stool suggests interior excess, the exterior syndrome must first be resolved. If purgation is applied directly, complications will arise.)
After diarrhea, if the body aches but bowel and bladder functions are normal, urgent treatment of the exterior is required. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is appropriate to induce sweating.
(The *Waitai Miyao* states: When the interior is harmonious but the exterior remains diseased, sweating therapy leads to recovery.)
In Taiyang Disease (Disease of the Exterior), if the pulse is floating and rapid, inducing sweating is appropriate.
In Taiyang Disease, if the pulse is floating, large, and rapid, inducing sweating is appropriate.
In Yangming Disease, if the pulse is slow, with excessive sweating and slight aversion to cold, the exterior has not yet resolved, so inducing sweating is appropriate.
In Yangming Disease, if the pulse is floating and rapid, inducing sweating is appropriate.
In Taiyang Disease, if there is frequent, mild spontaneous sweating, inducing sweating is further indicated.
Whenever the pulse is floating and tight, floating indicates Wind, and tight indicates Cold; inducing sweating is appropriate.
In Taiyang Disease, if mild wheezing occurs after purgation, the exterior has not resolved, so inducing sweating is appropriate.
In Taiyang Disease, if there is fever, sweating, and aversion to cold, inducing sweating is appropriate.
Excessive sweating leading to loss of Yang Qi, accompanied by delirium, is contraindicated for purgation. Administer Chaihu Guizhi Tang (Bupleurum and Cinnamon Twig Decoction) to harmonize Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive levels) and facilitate the flow of Body Fluids; the condition will resolve spontaneously thereafter.
(The Stomach is the sea of water and grain, and the master of Body Fluids. Excessive sweating depletes Body Fluids, causing dryness in the Stomach, which inevitably leads to delirium. This is not an excess-heat pattern, thus purgation is contraindicated. Administering...)
