The theory of Shanghan (Cold Damage) originated with the Yellow Emperor, who opened the way; it was Zhang Zhongjing who later detailed its categories. Superficial studies in later generations often failed to grasp its complexity. Theories proposed by authors often describe symptoms such as chest and diaphragm fullness and oppression, vomiting and regurgitation, qi obstruction, abdominal borborygmi, or abdominal pain. These share the same underlying principle as Zhang Zhongjing's discussion of Shaoyin, Taiyin, and Jueyin diseases but present different clinical manifestations.
Therefore, for patients presenting with chest stuffiness and shortness of breath where qi cannot connect smoothly, one may administer Wenzhong medicines (Warm-the-Middle formulas) according to the pulse and syndrome. If the patient's pulses at both wrists are deep and slow, or tight, this indicates Cold in the Stomach.
[Formula] Wenzhong Tang (Warm the Middle Decoction)
Ingredients: Tingpi (Cortex Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 liang), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 2 qian, processed), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli, each 2 qian), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 2 qian), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, 1 liang, processed).
Preparation: Grind all ingredients into a fine powder.
[Formula] Jupi Tang (Tangerine Peel Decoction)
Ingredients: Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 1 liang), Huoxiang (Patchouli Herba, 3 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, each 2 qian).
Usage: Grind into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Add one cup of water, one piece of fresh ginger (Shengjiang, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) the size of a jujube, crushed. Decoct until reduced to 70%. Strain and take hot. If symptoms do not improve after three doses, and hands/feet remain cold with persistent vomiting, add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, half liang).
[Formula] Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction)
Ingredients: Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Ganshengjiang (Dried Fresh Ginger, 2.5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 7.5 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 7 qian), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Huoxiangye (Patchouli Leaf, 5 qian).
Preparation: Grind into a fine powder.

[Formula] Er Ling Tang (Two Polypori Decoction)
