Xu Donggao stated: For patients with hematochezia (blood in stool), if treatment with cooling herbs (herbs with cold/cool nature) proves ineffective, pungent-flavored herbs must be added. If the addition of pungent herbs remains ineffective, warm-natured formulas combined with herbs that lift and raise Qi should be used; furthermore, the herbs must be soaked or stir-fried with wine to achieve efficacy. For cases that are chronic and characterized by deficiency, a warming and dispersing method should be employed, such as Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) augmented with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Pao Ganjiang (Prepared Zingiberis Rhizoma).
