This is roughly the general principle. According to this method, apply once daily. For the first application, use three or four moxa cones; on the second day, use four or five; subsequently increase gradually until reaching six or seven cones. Generally, the number of cones should be adjusted according to the severity of the sore. For severe cases, within six or seven days, the necrotic tissue will completely transform into pus and discharge continuously from the wound. New flesh will grow like pomegranate seeds. At this stage, moxibustion is no longer necessary. The application of the surrounding paste (Wei Yao) should remain consistent throughout. As the swelling subsides, the paste should be applied progressively inward. After moxibustion and applying the surrounding paste, do not allow physicians to cover the wound with plaster, which may cause toxic heat to stagnate. Instead, cut open a scallion leaf and place it over the wound opening according to its size. Before moxibustion, boil pig trotters in water, clarify the broth, and wash away the surrounding paste. Follow the moxibustion method. Once the condition improves significantly and granulation tissue nearly fills the wound, Shengji San (Flesh-Generating Powder) can be used, or protect the area with Taiyi Gao (Great One Plaster). Even after recovery, the plaster should not be removed immediately. This details the beginning and end of the treatment. Regarding internal medication, the formulas generally include Shixuan San (Ten-Acclamation Powder) and Huxin San (Heart-Protecting Powder). Cold-natured herbs are strictly contraindicated to avoid damaging Stomach Qi. This disease is caused by anger, depression, and rich dietary intake. The illness develops over years; the longer it persists, the more severe it becomes. The regulation method requires restraining anger and desires, combined with clearing, dispersing, and supporting interior treatments. If only the previous formulas are used, even if Lu Ren (Bian Que) were reborn, there would be little hope for recovery. Initially, the previous formula was used only for back carbuncles, but later it was found effective for all types of swelling and toxicity. Treatment methods have no fixed rules; physicians must be flexible. Proficiency depends on the individual. I am inept and prone to illness, so I pay attention to medical arts. However, without repeated verification, I dare not easily teach others. This formula was first verified in Hunan, then verified again at the residence of Chen Dashan Jing Shan, and Fan Zhonghan She Chu. It has been used for other conditions with immediate effect. Therefore, I detail it here. The transmission comes from Daoist Sun, who now widely spreads it in Guangling. My late mother relied on it for twenty years of safety.
Lai Yangbo from Chiyang said: Wang Xiaolian Liangfu told me that there is a person in Guangling skilled in Shen Deng Zhao (Divine Lamp Moxibustion), who treated his back carbuncle effectively. I have obtained his secret formula and remember it. In late Jiyu year, while staying in Guangling, I accidentally developed a swelling on my thigh. I invited the skilled practitioner to treat it with the lamp, and it healed without suppuration. Another friend, Hu Hansu, suffered from a back carbuncle as large as an inverted bowl. He was mentally confused and lethargic. The surgeon was helpless, stating that one must wait for the flesh to rot before applying plaster to promote healing. When asked about the technique, he said it was too late; when asked about the prognosis, he said it would take a hundred days. Indeed, as he predicted, Hu Hansu would likely die. Thus, I urgently sought the printed version of the aforementioned formula from my brothers and treated him according to the method. Pain stopped on the first day; clarity of mind returned in two to three days, feeling like liberation from shackles. The swelling decreased daily without rotting. Within a month, pus discharged completely, and he recovered vigorously. How miraculous! The pathogen resolved without sweating, suppuration occurred without needling, depression lifted without moxibustion, vitality strengthened without tonification, and toxins cleared without purgation. Physicians need not use needles. The profound truth lies in simplicity; the Great Dao is right before us. This is truly inconceivable. Ancient and modern masters of the Dao achieved subtlety in such ways. I reprint this text and write this preface.
Nie Yunhan from Quliang said: In late spring of Wuxu year, I suffered from a carbuncle in my capital residence. The carbuncle was located on the middle of the back, directly opposite the heart. Initially, it was as small as a millet grain; scratching it caused pain and itching related to the heart. Chills and fever alternated. Within ten days, it grew as large as a sheng (unit of volume); after another ten days, as large as a dou. Appetite was reversed, and stool was constipated. For a whole month, I did not blink my eyes. I had already exhibited eight or nine of the fatal signs recorded in medical texts. I experienced clinical death twice and revived. Believing I would not survive, I arranged my affairs.偶然ly, I obtained an immortal prescription transmitted by Li Xiaoheng via Yang Chupu. Following the method of fumigation and application, the toxin gradually resolved after two days, and improvement began. Without changing the prescription, I fully recovered within twenty days from onset. Upon returning home, I tested it on others. Within just over a month, even severe cases recovered within a hundred days. Perhaps because my toxin was extremely heavy, the situation was severe, and treatment was delayed. Even renowned surgeons were helpless, claiming they had never seen such a case. Yet, when tested on others, results were faster. This is due to differences in toxin severity and timing of treatment. I reflect that without this extraordinary prescription, I could not have survived my critical condition. Without my recovery, the miracle of this prescription could not be revealed. Since I survived by this prescription, how can I bear to let others die from this condition? I worry this prescription will not spread widely, and people may ignore it or doubt it due to pride. Suspicions may arise instantly, causing irreversible mistakes. Thus, I add these words as an introduction.
Wang Weiying from Xianlin said: On Duanwu Festival of Bingwu year, I developed a carbuncle on my left arm, as large as a fist. Using the Qizhuma (Riding Bamboo Horse) method, I performed over a hundred moxa burns. The swelling rose like a copper coin, and surrounding edema receded. I kept this immortal prescription in my bamboo slip collection and ordered medicine preparation, intending to fumigate after rupture, unaware it could be used at the onset. A guest recommended fumigation. On that day, I fumigated ten times. The wound apex elevated, and surrounding color normalized. At night, toxic necrotic tissue transformed into thick pus from the edges, slowly ulcerating internally, sticky like glue. Daily fumigation, washing, and dressing followed the method. After five to six days, the central necrotic tissue detached in a strip. There were thirteen holes in total, with three additional holes串连 (connected) about one finger-width outside the main wound. It was painful and itchy. I intensified the fumigation. Initially, yellow fluid discharged, then thick pus, finally clear serum. The mouth closed instantly without further spreading. The original prescription mentions using specific herbs. If unavailable in Chang'an, use only three flowers of Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle). If dry and painful, remove and do not reapply. Do not use Shengji San; only protect with Taiyi Gao. Recovered completely in over a month. While this wound was healing, another carbuncle appeared on the left arm, identical in position. I fumigated ten times and applied Wen Ge Gao (Clam Shell Plaster) mixed with bran and vinegar, changing several times a day. On the second day, five strips; on the third day, the apex ruptured with pus discharge, painless and itch-free. Toxin dispersed. Others with different sores also benefited; the swelling dispersed upon fumigation without forming. This confirms the prescription is truly divine. Taking this to treat sores, no sore remains untreatable. I worry people only know to fumigate after rupture, not realizing early fumigation is easier to resolve. I worry incomplete herbal application leads to discarding the formula, not knowing application is optional. Thus, I detail the process to demonstrate efficacy.
Xiyao Shenxiao San (Washing Divine Efficacy Powder) (123): Washes various yin-damp sores.
She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit, 2 liang) Pu Xiao (Mirabilite, 1 liang).
Take 1 liang per dose, boil in 1 bowl of water for a few boils. Wash the sore, dry it, and sprinkle Shengji San.
Xionghuang Jiedu San (Realgar Detoxification Powder) (124): Treats all abscesses and ulcers. For severe toxicity, use this 2-3 times first, then Pig Trotter Soup.
Xionghuang (Realgar, 1 liang) Bai Fan (Alum, 4 liang) Hanshui Shi (Calcitrite, 1.5 liang).
Grind all to powder. Use 1 liang of powder in 2-3 bowls of boiling water. Wash the affected area while hot, then apply Taiyi Gao or Shenyi Gao.
Zhuti Tang (Pig Trotter Decoction) (125): Treats all abscesses, cane-wound ulcers, removes necrotic tissue, moistens wound edges, relieves pain.
Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Chi Shao Yao (Red Peony Root), Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice), Lu Feng Fang (Honeycomb, preferably with larvae, each 5 qian).
Boil 1 pig trotter in 4-5 bowls of water. Remove oil, take clear soup. Add 1 liang of the above herbs, boil 10+ times. Strain and wash warm. Necrotic tissue falls off with washing. Apply plaster afterwards. Note: Huang Qin is not necessary; substituting with Bai Fan is better.

Lizhai said: This is an aromatic preparation. Qi and Blood move with fragrance and reverse with foul odors. Suitable when toxin is nearly exhausted.
If necrotic tissue exists, use Xionghuang Jiedu San first, then this formula. After washing, immediately apply plaster to prevent wind invasion until closure. Strictly avoid flesh-generating drugs.
Fu Yao Fang (Application Formula) (127):
Che Qian Cao (Plantago Herb), [Missing Character] Cao, Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle Flower), Wu Zhao Long Cao (Solomon's Seal Vine?).
Mash the four fresh herbs together. Add aged rice flour (used for paste). For early stages, add a little Fei Yan (sublimated salt). Mix into a thick paste and apply to the sore, leaving the center open to drain pus. In winter, use dried leaves powdered and mixed with aged vinegar. If Wu Zhao Long Cao is unavailable, the other four are sufficient. Do not be rigid. Yangbo said: For severe early-stage toxin, take Baidu (Detoxifying) herbs for several doses. For weak Qi and Blood, take Toli (Supporting Interior) herbs. This ensures complete safety.
Mi Chuan Wei Yao Tie Jing Lan (Secret Transmission Surrounding Medicine Iron Well Fence) (128): Applies to all malignant toxins,收敛 (astringes) and reduces swelling, divine efficacy.
Niu Fen Hui (Cow Dung Ash, sun-dried and burned, stored in new porcelain jar, double amount in dry places), Tie Xian Cao (Lygodium Spore), Cao Wu (Aconite Root), Wen Ge (Clam Shell), Bai Ji (Bletilla Rhizome).

Maifan Stone Plaster is difficult to prepare; Shenyi Gao is also effective.
Bai Maifan Shi (White Maifan Stone, calcined in charcoal fire, quenched with vinegar several times, ground extremely fine, 2 liang. Per Bencao, stones resembling rice balls, clumped together, are suitable). Lu Jiao (Deer Horn, fresh with brain bone, broken, burned in charcoal until smoke ceases, ground extremely fine, 4 liang).
Mix with Rice Vinegar. Simmer in a clay pot, stirring constantly with a bamboo stick until paste forms. Wash affected area with Pig Trotter Soup first. Apply around the perimeter with a goose feather. Moisten with vinegar if dry. For rotten areas, apply with cloth. Li said: Maifan Stone Plaster is miraculous for back carbuncles, yet rarely known. Cases of abscesses failing to suppurate critically were cured overnight with this plaster. Suppuration resolves toxin. Record this for careful preparation to ensure perfection. I despise doctors who hide good prescriptions or alter them to confuse people. Xi Hua Maifan Stone was kept secret until death; such selfishness is scorned by gentlemen.
Hei Mo Zi (Black Powder) (140): Treats furuncles.
Burn Sheep Horn with internal bone to preserve nature. Grind to powder. Mix 3 qian with Wine. Take divided doses. Sores may disperse. Lizhai said: I have not used this secret formula. I once treated sudden red spots on face or body, itching or toxic furuncles. Untreated, it can be fatal. Burn sheep horn to preserve nature, grind fine. Mix with Egg White and apply. Very effective. Bencao agrees.
Ruxiang Ding Tong San (Frankincense Pain-Stopping Powder) (141): Treats ulcerated sores with unbearable pain unresponsive to other drugs.

Grind to fine powder. Apply to affected area. Pain stops immediately. Frankincense and Myrrh are warm; balanced with cold agents, effective for both cold and hot pain.
Wujin Gao (Black Gold Plaster) (141): Treats dead flesh in the center of back carbuncles. Applied to dead flesh, it causes putrefaction; applied to living flesh, it promotes growth. For initial swelling/pain, dot a few points to resolve toxin instantly. For necrotic black flesh, it causes ulceration. For stubborn sores with intact Yuan Qi but slow healing due to deep toxin roots, soak paper wicks in the medicine and insert inside. For back carbuncles due to weak Yuan Qi or over-treatment, where toxin scatters (dark center, red edge, non-suppurating), take major tonics. Apply plaster 3-4 cun wide. In 5-6 days, cracks appear at the boundary. Center gradually ulcerates. Use Pure-Yang internal medicine to support Yuan Qi for healing. Do not use knives/needles to bleed, as Yang dissipates with Yin, worsening Qi. Cold medicines fail to resolve toxin and weaken Qi/Blood. Prescription: Remove shells from Ba Dou (Croton Seed), fry black, grind to paste. Dot on swelling or apply to necrotic flesh to digest. Add a little Ruxiang if needed. For internal application, thin with Sesame Oil. For residual toxin non-healing, apply to prevent pain.
Tougou Dan (Bone-Penetrating Pill) (143): A suppuration-promoting drug, essential in surgery.
Chan Su (Toad Venom) Peng Sha (Borax) Qing Fen (Calomel) Ba Dou (Croton Seed, each 5 qian) Wo Niu (Snail, 2) She Xiang (Musk, 1 fen).
First grind Ba Dou to mud. Add Snail and Musk, grind again. Add remaining drugs, grind extremely fine. Store in small porcelain bottle. Use a small amount dissolved in Milk. Gently pierce the head of the toxin with an iron needle. Insert a grain-sized amount of medicine into the wound. Cover externally with Qingliang Gao.
Zhen Tou San (Needle-Head Powder) (144): Treats all stubborn sores with sinus tracts/necrotic tissue, or scrofula nodules not resolving, or wounds not closing. Promotes erosion of necrotic tissue.
Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite, 5 qian) Qing Fen (Calomel) She Xiang (Musk, each 5 fen) Ruxiang (Frankincense) Bai Ding Xiang (White Starling Dropping, each 3 qian) Sheng Pi (Arsenic Trioxide) Huang Dan (Lead Monoxide, each 1 qian).
Wu Gong (Centipede, 1 piece, dried by roasting).
Grind to powder. Apply to necrotic tissue to dissolve it. For small wounds or hemorrhoids, mix with Rice Paste into thin strips, dry in shade, insert, and cover with plaster. For chronic non-healing wounds with sinuses, must use this to erode. Internally take Toli (Supporting Interior) medicine.
Dai Zhen Gao (Needle-Replacing Plaster) (145): Treats mature pus not ulcerating.
Ruxiang (Frankincense, 2 fen) Bai Ding Xiang (White Starling Dropping, authentic) Ba Dou (Croton Seed, fried scorched) Jian (Alkali, each 5 fen).

40 Glutinous Rice grains. Place fist-sized piece of Mineral Ash in porcelain bowl. Add well water. When heat subsides, place rice grains into ash. Wait until rice resembles crystal. Remove and use. If not ready, repeat ash treatment.
Grind ingredients separately, then mix and store. Form pills the size of wheat grains using Rice Paste. Use one pill, moisten with water, attach to wound head. Pus will discharge spontaneously.
For robust Qi/Blood with mature non-ulcerating pus, use this to drain toxin, promoting flesh growth and healing. For deficient Qi/Blood, use Sweet-Warm tonics. Otherwise, it will not ulcerate nor heal. For deep bone abscesses or critical areas, timely acupuncture/drainage is best.
San He San (Three-Harmony Powder) (147): Treats abscesses failing to form pus.
Xin Ba Dou Rou (Fresh Croton Seed Flesh) Ming Pi (Refined Arsenic) Ban Mao (Mustard Beetle, equal parts).
Grind to fine powder. Fill into the wound. Necrotic tissue dissolves.
Lizhai said: This formula is highly toxic. Use only for malignant toxin to attack poison with poison. For deficiency of Yang Qi unable to transform into pus, use major tonics and Moxibustion with Mulberry wood. Danxi said: Robust Qi/Blood leads to spontaneous pus discharge. Generally, speed of ulceration/healing depends on Qi/Blood strength.
Lilu Gao (Veratrum Plaster) (148): Treats all sores/carbuncles with protruding flesh, regardless of size/length. Use Veratrum alone, ground to powder. Mix with raw Pig Fat to make paste. Apply to affected area. Change weekly.
