Whenever moxibustion is employed, it must be indicated for sudden collapse of primordial yang (Yuan Yang) and disharmony of Ying-Wei (Defensive and Nutritive Qi) and blood and qi. To achieve rapid effects, only mugwort fire is suitable. However, the application of fire therapy is appropriate only for patients with yang deficiency accompanied by excessive cold and stagnation of meridians and collaterals. If there is excessive fire depleting lung metal (Lung), kidney water deficiency leading to dryness, rapid pulse, fever, dry throat, flushed face, thirst, and hot stools, moxibustion should not be applied recklessly. Misapplication will inevitably cause the blood to become drier and heat to intensify, thereby accelerating the critical condition.
First, regarding moxibustion technique: on the head and face, moxa cones should be small rather than large; on the hands and feet, they may be thicker. Moxibustion must proceed from top to bottom; one should not moxa the lower parts first and then the upper parts.
Moxibustion for critical conditions such as Feifeng (Non-wind stroke/Cerebral Apoplexy) and sudden syncope:
Shenque (CV-8): Fill the navel completely with purified salt that has been stir-fried until dry. Cover with a thick slice of fresh ginger and moxa 100 to 500 cones; more is better. Replace the ginger when it burns. Alternatively, use Sichuan pepper (Chuanjiao) instead of salt; or place pepper at the bottom, cover with salt, and then cover with ginger for moxibustion, which is also excellent.
Dantian (CV-17 area/Conception Vessel intersection) and Qihai (CV-6): Both points connect to Mingmen (GV-4). They are essentially the sea of vital qi and the root of the meridians. Moxibustion on these points yields significant efficacy.
Moxibustion for Feifeng involving internal organs, qi obstruction with phlegm surging upward, coma, danger, and inability to speak:
Baihui (GV-2), Fengchi (GB-20), Dazhui (GV-14), Jianjing (GB-21), Quchi (LI-11), Jiashi (PC-5), Zusanli (ST-36).
Moxibustion for facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes):
Tinghui (GB-2) (moxa around the eye), Kerenren/Shangguan (GB-3) (moxa around the eye), Jiache (ST-6) (moxa around the mouth), Dicang (ST-4) (moxa around the mouth), Chengjiang (CV-24) (moxa around the mouth), Hegu (LI-4).
Moxibustion for hemiplegia, numbness of limbs, and hemiplegic paralysis:
Baihui (GV-2), Jianyu (LI-15), Quchi (LI-11), Fengshi (GB-31), Huantiao (GB-30), Zusanli (ST-36), Jiegu/Xuanshong (GB-39).
Hua Yuanhua stated: For Heart Wind, moxa Xinshu (BL-15); for Lung Wind, moxa Feishu (BL-13); for Spleen Wind, moxa Pishu (BL-20); for Liver Wind, moxa Ganshu (BL-18); for Kidney Wind, moxa Shenshu (BL-23). Regarding moxibustion for yang collapse, see "Heat Syndromes" Chapter 46.
