闽浙制使沈阳范时崇撰
The reign of our august sovereign has reached fifty years. Benevolent policies have been frequently implemented, and the wind of benevolence permeates everywhere. The people are living in harmony and prosperity, and all things are free from premature death. Indeed, there is no need to rely on the *Ling Shu* (Spiritual Pivot) and *Su Wen* (Basic Questions) to bring this world to an age of longevity. Nevertheless, as the late Wenzheng Gong once said: "If one cannot be a good prime minister, one should become a good physician." This implies that with a sage ruler, there must be capable ministers; and since the authority of a good physician is comparable to that of a good minister, how can the art of medicine be neglected? Since the times of Xuanyuan (Yellow Emperor) and Qibo, outstanding figures have appeared in every generation, but Zhang Zhongjing of Changsha is the most renowned. Later, whether it was Liu [Wansu], Li [Dongyuan], or Zhu [Danxi], all were famous as good physicians. However, their strengths inevitably stemmed from their own individual perspectives, much like Confucian scholars revering either Lu [Jiuyuan] or Zhu [Xi], leading to endless debates on similarities and differences without a unified standard.
Zhang Jingyue of Yue is a good physician. With high natural endowment and meticulous study of ancient texts, he is able to integrate the teachings of a hundred schools and penetrate the insights of various philosophers. Naming his book "Quan" (Complete/All-Encompassing), his self-confidence is evident. Without discussing other aspects, let us look at his chapter "Ni Shu" (Reverse Numbers). In this context, "reverse" yields Yang, and "smooth" yields Yin; while descending is the norm, ascending is the primary focus. This reveals the secrets of Yin and Yang, making him a physician whose skill is akin to immortality. If one considers such a person a physician, can they not be called "good"? Some might argue: Medicine is the way of life; military strategy is the mechanism of killing. Is it inappropriate to name chapters using military terms like "formation" (Zhen)? One does not realize that when Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is abundant, external pathogens cannot attack, just as fortified walls prevent invasion. Moreover, the success or failure of military formations depends on moments, whereas errors in medical treatment regarding cold, heat, draining, and tonifying allow for no slightest deviation. Who says medicine and military strategy are not connected? If generals are incompetent, soldiers are sent to their deaths; if physicians are incompetent, patients are used as test subjects for drugs. This is the subtle meaning behind Jingyue's use of "formation" to title his chapters.
This book was originally printed by Vice Governor Lu Qian'an during his tenure in Guangdong. It became highly sought after, with paper prices soaring in the five major capitals, making it difficult for seekers to obtain. Transport Commissioner Jia, who understood the principles of smoothness and reversal and mastered the logic of ascending and descending, harbored a sincere desire to benefit the world and thus re-engraved the woodblocks. In the first month of winter in the Gengyin year, I received the Emperor's mandate and departed immediately, unable to witness its completion. Two months later, Commissioner Jia showed me a letter stating that the reprinting of the *Jing Yue Quan Shu* (Complete Works of Zhang Jingyue) was finished and requested a preface. Although I am not talented, extending the intent of the late Wenzheng Gong regarding good physicians and good ministers, who knows that the past Mr. Zhang was not sufficient to be a good physician, and that the future Mr. Jia will not become a good minister to assist our August Sovereign in his boundless longevity? Therefore, I have written these few words to place at the beginning of the volume.
