The *Feng Su Tong* states: Animals and birds that die naturally all contain toxins and must not be eaten. Fish without gills are toxic; those with excessively large gills are also toxic. Soft-shelled turtles with red algal patterns on their bellies are toxic. Crabs with hair on their abdomens are toxic. Wine just removed from the fire is toxic. In the Jiangnan region, this is called "Huo Tou Jiu" (Fire Head Wine); consuming it causes hemorrhoids and excessive bleeding. Food consumed in summer that has been kept overnight becomes toxic. Wine left overnight in copper or tin vessels becomes toxic. Covering hot food with a copper vessel causes steam to condense into sweat-like droplets falling into the food, rendering it toxic. Soup boiled overnight is toxic if drunk; if used for washing hands, it causes scabies. Peach kernels and apricot kernels with double embryos are toxic and can cause death. Fruits that have not yet formed pits are toxic and cause boils and carbuncles. Fruits ripening and falling to the ground in summer and autumn, which have been crawled over by insects, are toxic; eating them leads to fistulas. Roof leak water is toxic; drinking it causes abdominal distension and death. Washing hands with it produces impetigo (oozing eczema), a fact verified repeatedly. Stagnant water in marshes is toxic; drinking it causes *jia* masses (abdominal lumps). Hot spring water in bathing pools is undrinkable, causing abdominal distension and chest tightness, but can be used for bathing to dispel wind and cure scabies and tinea. This is likely because the springs emerge from sulfur deposits, hence their warmth. Those suffering from scabies should bathe after a full meal, several times a day for consecutive days, until profuse sweating occurs, leading to recovery; those with weak constitutions should not bathe lightly.
