Plague is the pathogenic qi of heaven and earth. If the righteous qi within the human body is internally solid, then pathogenic factors cannot invade, and natural transmission will not occur. Therefore, the method to avoid plague lies in restraining desires and reducing labor. Especially after sexual intercourse or excessive fatigue, one must not be exposed to it, nor should one endure hunger to accept its qi; these are all essential methods. As for the method to repel pathogens, as stated in *Ci Fa Lun* (Treatise on Acupuncture Methods): "The Tianping (nose) receives qi from outside, and allows it to return; if qi exits from the brain, it will not be interfered with by pathogens." The term Tianping refers to the nose. The nose receives the clear qi of heaven, hence called Tianping. Qi comes from emptiness and should also depart through emptiness, which corresponds to "Tianping receives from the beginning and returns to where it came from." Precisely because qi connects to the nose, and the nose connects to the brain, toxic qi entering the brain will spread through the meridians, causing mutual infection. "Qi exiting from the brain" refers to sneezing, or opening the nostrils to vent the qi, or receiving qi indoors and then expelling it outward, followed by inhaling deeply to replace it with essence qi. In this way, pathogens exit through the nose, and toxic vapors dissipate naturally. This is the method of repelling pathogens from the exterior. Another method involves visualization techniques such as "imagining the heart like the sun." Since the Gallbladder belongs to Shaoyang (Lesser Yang), the official of equilibrium, when Shaoyang qi is strong, the qi of the zang-fu organs relies on it to become robust, preventing pathogen invasion. This is a method of strengthening the central equilibrium to resist pathogens. Whenever visiting patients or treating diseases where action is unavoidable, understanding these methods ensures that even in the most filthy places, one can remain secure without worry. One prescription treats epidemic seasonal qi (epidemic infectious diseases) and strange qi in dwellings by burning *Jiangzhen Xiang* (Aquilaria Agallocha Wood), which greatly resolves pathogenic filth. Children wearing it can resolve various pathogens, proving highly effective. Another method involves keeping Fujian scented tea cakes in the mouth from time to time, which greatly wards off cold damage, miasma, and foul odors.
*Yi Tong* states: When men are ill, pathogenic qi exits from the mouth; when women are ill, pathogenic qi exits from the anterior yin. During sitting or standing face-to-face, one must recognize their orientation (facing vs. back). Alternatively, apply powder of *Xionghuang* (Realgar) into the nostrils, move calmly, observe the position, and enter accordingly. Entering a sickroom, this is also knowledge indispensable for physicians.
