[Invention] The Lei fish (Lei Yu) is named so because it has a bone under its belly that can strangle or injure humans. Due to its sweet and warm nature, it opens the appetite and is suitable for the elderly; making it into dried fish (Xiang) is particularly good. Its spinal bone treats malaria: take one cun of spinal bone, add it to Qibao Yin (Seven Treasures Decoction), decoct with half wine and half water, leave it exposed overnight, and then consume.
Taste: Sweet; Nature: Warm; Toxicity: Non-toxic.
[Invention] Shiyu (Hilsa Herring) has a tonifying nature, warms the middle jiao, benefits deficiency without causing toxicity concerns. Those born in rivers are large, greenish in color, and extremely sweet and delicious; those born in the sea are small, reddish in color, and slightly less flavorful. Observing that it emits light in dark rooms, it is far from comparable to ordinary fish. Its scales, when boiled in sesame oil and applied to burns or scalds, are effective.

This fish has soft bones and crisp meat, benefiting stomach qi. Consuming it makes people fat and healthy. The roe in its abdomen is cold in nature and toxic; excessive consumption causes dysentery and diarrhea.
Taste: Sweet; Nature: Warm; Toxicity: Non-toxic. Those with black backs have the best taste. Because it lives in turbid water, although fatty, it inevitably carries slight toxicity. However, since it is commonly used as food, no harm from toxicity has been seen.
[Invention] All fish have active natures belonging to Fire, except Crucian Carp (Jiyu), which belongs to Earth and has the function of harmonizing stomach qi and solidifying intestines. Therefore, there is a warning against using it with Houpo (Magnolia Bark), because Houpo drains stomach qi, while Jiyu benefits stomach qi. Thus, *Da Ming Bencao* states it warms the middle and directs rebellious qi downward. Baosheng states it stops dysentery and thickens the intestines. Both refer to its tonifying effects. Freshly crushed and applied externally, it treats phlegm nodules and mastitis with hard swelling. Fried in lard until ash-like and taken internally, it treats intestinal abscesses. Boiled with Adzuki beans and the juice consumed, it reduces edema. The roasted oil mixed and applied treats women's genital ulcers. Burned with Green Vitriol (Luofan) into powder, it treats hemorrhoidal blood dysentery. Mixed with Green Vitriol mud for astringency, it treats regurgitation and vomiting of food. Baked with Wild Garlic (Husuan), it treats chest qi stagnation and fullness. In all cases, the scales must not be removed, as they have hemostatic properties.
Toxic.
[Invention] Shibanyu (Stone Spotted Fish) grows in streams and rocky areas in the south, several inches long, not exceeding a foot, existing only as females without males. In February and March, they mate with lizards on the water surface. Their roe is toxic to humans, causing vomiting and diarrhea. *Yi Shuo* records that a few drops of juice from Yuweicao (Fish Tail Grass) can detoxify it.
